Hi there,

i have been reading the posts from people who spend six and eight weeks on Bonaire diving- my question is- waht jobs do you all have which give you all this vacation time?
I would like to know because I want one!!!!
I am a student, but my buddy works for state, he gets 4.5 weeks a year, and we feel he doesn't get enough- what jobs give more????

Seb and I are stagehands and we work backstage on Broadway. We earn money, we take time off, we dive. Works for us.....

Hi Jacqueline,

our trick is to go there for work. Last year and this year we spent several weeks in Bonaire shooting a multimedia diving guide.

And of course, you could always just buy a business here, say, a restaurant, and live here permanently......or get a job in Holland, where 6 weeks vacation/year is fairly common.

It is interesting to see what people do, and what is important to everyone. I am British and there we get more vacation time- similar to Holland although not quite as good, but here in the States the "norm" for all our friends(not working for state) is two weeks. It is difficult to get friends to join us on vacation with so little time.
Thanks to everyone who posted, I was just interested. Given the choice I would dive 24/7 but reality often kicks in.
Jacqueline

Most jobs I have had (with the exception of when I taught at college for a few years, where you get summers and a month at Christmas...with no pay) you either accrue one week your first year, or begin accruing a week AFTER your first year...and then after 2 or 3 years you get 2 weeks. I just hit my 4 years in April, and got bumped up to 3 weeks. Definitely a lot less vacation time that other countries! Plus, you only get 5 sick days a year...and/or no personal days...I like Ruth's idea of moving to Bonaire...which begs the question...what is the norm for vacation time for folks living and working on Bonaire?

All day every day from what I saw, it might have been the family money that allows for this.

Inside joke.

I am an engineer for the Boeing Company and get more vacation than most companies, which is nice and my wife is employed part-time as a nurse, and self-employed as a massage therapist, so her schedule is flexible.

Our diving together began five years ago in Akumal, Mexico, 60 mi south of Cancun on the northern end of Belize's barrier reef. Excellent diving, by any standards. Then my sister recommended Bonaire. Went for the first time last October and will be returning this October. We had a great.... well, you know what kind of time we had. Like Jacqueline, we wish our visits could be more frequent.

No, but I did rummage around the shed. They thought I was changing my clothes. Nothing in the flower pots and dive gear, some of which I tripped over in the dark.

I'm a self employed builder of things.

1994 to now - about 5,400 small boats.

Last actual job I had working for somebody was in college.

Cynde, on the Antilles the minimum is 15 days per year. More is allowed, less is not. Based on full time, that is.

In Holland the minimum is 25 days per year with a full time job.

Thanks Kitty. 15 Days minium per year is still better than the U.S., which allows the company to dictate how much vacation & sick time you get. Some are more generous than others. Do you get additional sick/personal days on top of the 15/25 days?

Workers don't 'earn' sick days like in the US. If you are sick, and the doctor agrees, then paid sick leave (from 50-100%) is approved by the doctor and national health care system (SVB Bonaire). From what I've seen, there is almost no limit to the amount of sick days an employee can receive. The employer must pay the employee, then wait (up to 7+ years) for SVB to reimburse the money. Personal days are at the employer's discretion; not mandatory.

I started Sundance a little by accident....it's a funny story.
Can't really picture doing anything but boatbuilding now.
Unlike housebuilding, the boat business can grow world wide to levels a little startling.
Keeping a very firm grip on this tiger's tail :-)

Wally, I would love to hear the Sundance story, the longer the better - and I'm confident I'm not alone in that. So tell all - nothing nicer than a success story!

Ah never understood, that phrase, how can you grow dirt? Or are we distinguishing dirt farmers from sea and air farmers?

Jacqueline-
I am a bartender on Nantucket Island, MA. Our restaurant is open 9 months. I work hard and squirrel away my money so that when we are closed, I can go to Bonaire for 6-8 weeks. I get no paid vacation, therefore I dine Chez Cultimara and Consales alot, but I'll splurge when guests come down. Bonaire is the carrot when I start to get burned out....keep your eye on the prize...

Well...you could start an adult web site and make a ton of money and have plenty of time off since it doesn't require too much time!! Works for me!

I also work in archaeology (yes, I swear, I do have a degree!)and that work is intermittent, so I can take off when I want.

Went to Bon twice last year. For a whole 3 wks in Dec. Will be back sometime this year, not sure when as I spend a ton of time in England right now visiting my boyfriend...I live in Los Angeles!

Ok, so I'm a bit of a risk taker...but I sure enjoy life!
