OK, plans have officially changed:-) Rather than meeting at Gibi's on the 8th, we will have a BYOE Green Flash Potluck BBQ at Jake and Linda's, hosted by Cynde and Kelly:-) Time: 6:30 PM

We will supply the paper plates, forks, spoons and cups...and a nice sunset and friendship gathering:-)

Cynde,
No this is our first trip and we are really excited. Relatively new divers we are dying to try shore diving. We spent our last vacation in Saba last year and had a fabulous trip.

Robert, you will fall in LOVE with Bonaire and the diving. The shore diving is easy (compared to where I live anyway!) The only thing you really need are booties to get past the coral rubble entry on most sites. Stop by and say hi to Kelly and I when you are there. Are you leaving on the 8th? That is when we are having the BBQ:-)

I would be interested to hear about Saba. My husband and I are going to ST. Marteen next year and I know the diving isn't great, but it is essentially a freebie for us...I understand it is near Saba.

Hi:

We will be in Bonaire on July 8th and would love to come to the Potluck BBQ. Is there anything in particular you would like us to bring from home, like a couple of bottles of CA wine maybe?

We are staying at the Divi and will not have access to a refrigerator or a kitchen. But we would love to come and bring something. Could you email us directions as to where to go or post them here? I can also pack stuff to make a crab dip, but would need some cream cheese. Can I get some in Bonaire?

Thanks!

Suzi

Kelly and I are going to provide all the eating and drinking ware (fine wedgewood plastic!) it will be great to meet another left coaster! roger and karen huff will also be there and they are from the left coast too, oh, and now if corey comes, we may actually have a left coast coo at the bbq!

Just a reminder that we have a gas grill here on the patio too, in case anyone wants to grill up some food on July 8th (and even a smoker if someone wants to invest the time in smoking some meat, e.g. chickens, turkey, ham, etc.). Linda & I will instruct Cynde and Kelly on proper use of these items, if they feel they need it :-)

Cynde,
Saba was awseome. You can take a ferry over from St Marteen. I would definately dive with Saba Deep. They have small boats lots of personalized attention, and the best lunch on the Island. The sites are fabulous, lot's of deep dives, all boat dives (there is no beach on Saba) Water is warm, we never wore exposure suits. Have a great time, and if you go be sure to say hi to the two Mikes at Saba Deep. God Save the Queen!

jake, just checked it out...do you have it shipped directly to you or do you have it shipped to someone in the states to bring down. i don't think it would last if i tried to bring it from here...my leg is almost 24 hours:-(

Kay Powers has always arranged for someone to bring them down (herself included) :-)

That would be a lot faster than FedEx directly to Bonaire (which is 2-3 business days, and UPS & DHL are far worse).

Hi Cynde thier is my husband and my two daughters ages 16 and 13. We are staying at the belmar. Has anyone stayed at the belmar can you remind me if they have a oven. The reason i ask I make this great desert called smash cake that I would love to make. Maybe it would be easier to make ahead of time but worried how it will travel.

We're interested in coming, however directions would be much appreciated also.

What time do you all arrive on the 4th ? Hi Terri,
Last year we bought chicken breasts at Cultimara, from the fresh meat counter. They were VERY tasty, with much more flavor than what we get in the US. Perhaps they are free range chickens? I don't recall there being a great number of them available - just a few were on display.
Look forward to meeting you at the BBQ!

Looking forward to meeting you too. Is Cultimara the grocery downtown or the Sam's looking place out where the warehouses/industrial buildings are?

It's the one downtown. I haven't been to Warehouse Bonaire yet, though I have been to their website. Does that count?

Perhaps someone on the island can give us a better idea of the normal availability of chicken breasts, and where best to buy them.

Three weeks 'til takeoff, here.

Frozen chicken breasts are almost always available in multi-pound "bricks" (the ones offered at Cultimara are most likely thawed versions of said bricks of chicken breasts). If you want non-frozen, then Cultimara or Warehouse are the places to go.

Jake

PS If anyone's leaving Bonaire on AA the morning of July 15th (a Tuesday) and will be driving to the airport and is at one of the northern resorts, please drop me a note - I'd love to share a ride :-) (Linda will be in NH at the time, our kids with their adopted older sister here on Bonaire, and I have a business trip that just popped up.)

Nope - that starts the next week. I don't move vacations for clients as a rule :-)

Bright point of my new trip is that I get to fly back to BON with Linda from San Juan, sitting next, to her, even! ;-)

Downside is that it means I will be spending 2/3rd of July away from Bonaire.

Jake,

We are staying at Capt. Don's and I believe we are leaving on the 15th. Last time we had to be at the airport at 4:00 am. I will assume we'll be in the same situation this time.

If this fits with your plans, then by all means we would love to give you a lift.

Let me check my tickets again to be sure when we are leaving.

I'll get with you by Monday and let you know. Sometimes I don't log on during the week-ends.

BTW, I'm going to quit worrying about the chicken breasts now.

Hey Kelly, I finally got our travel docs!

We will indeed be in SJU - we are on flight AA 1894, arriving SJU at 3:33pm. Flight AA 5134 departing SJU at 5:35, arriving BON at 7:37.

Maybe I can get your professional opinion in the duty free shop in San Juan on some "umbrella drink" ingredients. Looks like we'll have a little more time in San Juan this trip. Last year it was a hustle from one end of the airport to the other, just to board an unairconditioned bus and stand on it for an hour. We did meet some very friendly Bonairians on that bus though.

19 days....

Cheryl

Wow! Sounds like a "Risky Business" party with the parents away! Sorry we will miss the BBQ. We leave Bonaire July 2nd to head back home to Dallas. Have fun!

Does anyone know of any other get-togethers happening June 25th through July 1st other than the BT dinner at Gibi's (which we plan to attend July 1st)?

Thanks for the offer, Christine, that is very generous.

We do have a rental, but I'm not yet sure whether we pick that up at the Belmar or at the airport. Have you rented a vehicle thru the Belmar before? If we pick it up the airport, that's done, otherwise I suspect the folks at the Belmar will pick us up. I'll contact them next week and get the details.

Thanks again for your generous offer.
Cheryl

you are welcome and it wasnt that generous. Last time we were there the people from ab were there and had a sign with our name on it when we came.Last time it was a man waiting for us and we had rented a jeep but to our dismay we realised all our luggage wouldnt fit and four people and the guy was very nice and put luggage in a pickup truck and took us to the belmar. We ended up trading the jeep for a pickup truck. Irene at the belmar is so good we didnt arrive when we were late because of dca but she stayed till we got there and showed us around. Part of the reason we love bonaire so much is because of the experience that we had staying at the belmar. One thing for sure is you can count on thier not being a problem with your truck rental or your room. Plus this time I got my airfare through them and she got it cheaper than the internet or the airline itself.

Hi Cynde, Jake, and all others. My name is Jim McPeak. I have posted on BT quite a bit. We shall be on Bonaire from June 21 to July 9. I would love to meet youz guys. (we're from Philadelphia) In all my travels to Bonaire, I only met Jake for a fleeting moment last June at the dive festival slide show at the Divi. Please add us onto the base for July 8th, our last night. Kathi and I shall also be at Gibi's on Tuesday, the 24th at 18:30, if anyone is around. Thank you so much for putting this all together.

I am sure that you and kelly will hook up on the flight to bonaire:-)

james, i have added you to the list! glad you will be able to make the bbq on your last night! it will be a great way to finish your trip!

Terri,

Great news about the 15th! But we'll hopefully get a chance to meet before hand. Thanks!

You'll probably want to get a dial-up account with BonaireLive (www.bonairelive.com) or get an AT&T Global Net account (www.attglobal.net), which has a local access number on Bonaire. Don't forget to check to see how much local calls cost - they aren't free, even to regular folks, so you can bet the hotel will charge you for them.

That is a very cool shot Wally. I assume that was taken last December, or New Year's Day. I was down there the same time as you. Unfortunately, we had to fly out the day of Jake's BBQ on the 1st of January. I was bummed flying out that day, lookng up the coast and thinking of you sucking down Amstels and eating ribs. (but deep down, through the resentfulness and jealousy, I was happy for you.) I'll be back this Saturday for almost 3 weeks, so life is good again.

I am looking forward to meeting you and all the other people as well Cynde. Where do you live in California? I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in southern California for a while. James, I am in Laguna Niguel, between Dana Point and Laguna Beach. I was raised in San Diego....so Camp Pendleton is just a stones throw down the coast! Oh, and I have had more than enough experiences with tremors, small earthquakes...the building i work in is 3 stories high, and when we get a small one, you can feel the building "sway" makes ya feel like you're on a boat!

Cynde, James,
Our son leaves for boot camp at Camp Pendleton on Monday! Cynde, you'll have to tell us about the diving in that area. We should be there sometime around the end of September for his graduation (if all goes well), and are considering arriving a little early to get a couple of dives in. We are Warm Water Wimps though, so I'm not sure I can take the <brrrrrr> cold!
Our son is a diver as well, but I doubt he'll have the energy to dive immediately after boot camp!
Can't wait to meet everybody! Departure in two weeks!!!! Yay!

There is nothing like diving the kelp beds of Southern California! If you do plan on coming out early to do some diving, let me know and Michael and I would be glad to show you some good local kelp haunts! I will send you some pics to tempt you:-)

Cynde and Cheryl,

Kathi and I just finished packing, and we are headed for the airport hotel. As we are both teachers in a very large suburban school district of Philadelphia, we did not waste any time beating feet for Bonaire. In fact, we just finished today. I know Laguna Niguel and Laguna Beach well. My cousin used to live in Laguna, and on weekends I would shoot up to stay with her. We had some great times.

Cheryl, I know you must have some appehension about your son going into the Corps, because of world events. My oldest son is with the FBI, and I worry about him constantly. Just know that your son will receive incredible training in the world's finest fighting machine. ( I'm not prejudiced am I? LOL) Please give him my best, and give him a big Semper Fidelis for me.

Jim

When my husband joined back up in the Coast Guard Reserves, we went to the Marine Boot Camp Base in San Diego to get our Military ID's (The only Coast Guard base is in San Pedro). Anyway, we were laughing at ourselves because we looked soooooo out of place with all these young kids, and they were VERY serious...I was afraid that one of the officers was going to ask us what the heck we were doing on base dressed like we were! Okay, I'll be the one to ask.... if everyone on the list shows up, there will be ~100 people at the party. Will Jake and Linda's house/garden HOLD 100 people? How about all those rental cars? Gotta park 'em somewhere!

So how 'bout it, are those numbers realistic?
NOT to be a party pooper... I am SO looking forward to it!

100 people? Sure.
We have more than that every New Year's Day.

Our neighbor Harrie is a BTer too, so we have some parking in front of his place, plus Divers Paradise is across the street which has some parking without blocking their customers. Plus along the street all the way to Bas' house.

OK Cheryl, you had me looking at the chart...I count approximately 56 if everyone that is listed as a single name brings one person...I believe that Ken Watson's group of 41 are coming and going at different dates...so not sure just how many of those folks will be on the island on the 8th. Quite a few people are arriving after the 8th...so I don't think it will hit 100??? Linda and Jake are the best to let this happen without them there! I guess it would have been a tight fit at Gibi's with around 60!

Hi Cynde,
Yes, I got the same number, then added that 41, and it was getting awfully close to 100!
We'll have to be sure and use the same motto we use when entering the wilderness - "Leave it cleaner than when you arrived."

And just so you know, Airey and I will be on Bonaire July 4-11.

Guess I better do another head count...and plan to buy more plastic ware and name tags! LOL! Thanks for the end date:-)

I am going to make name tags for everyone, so if you want a name tag for someone that is not on the sheet, just post it please:-) Of course, I will have blank ones the day of the BBQ:-)

Cynde, You will have such a great party! I am way jealous... NAME TAGS are a good idea, because some BT'ers are modest and don't introduce themselves to everyone, and you find out later that someone you wanted to meet was there!!

Niki, I can't wait...to get there...and get in the water...and have some fun:-) I thought the name tag thing might be a good idea...especially for those that don't have pics posted on their profiles...or if they only have their backs posted:-) Do you have this June gloom up your way? The sun FINALLY came out yesterday afternoon for a bit...I drove to work with the top down today regardless of the lack of warmth or sun! LOL!

The day we got back from Bonaire it was 85 and beautiful, but ever since it's been grey and 60. I am wearing my winter clothes, and shivering because I had turned off the house heat for the summer. Gloom is right. Forecast says heat is due tomorrow though!

Blue, I can't load this thread easily (all the excel files maybe) on my wimpy modem, so don't reply here, OK? I'm not even going to read my own post... ! :-)

My neighborhood is STILL not eligible for high-speed internet..... Bummer.

Jake had name tags last summer. He can at least point you to a source there or a need to bring some from here.
