We'll be making our first Bonaire visit for two weeks in May and I've been reading all these posts with interest for some time now. My question concerns the cocktail hour. In past Caribbean trips (Tortola, St. John, Belize, Yucatan Peninsula) our accommodations have all included a blender and we have enjoyed our nightly Pina Colada made with local rum. I've noticed several references to beer, but none to rum drinks; and as I just found out that our place won't have a blender I'm starting to get worried!!! I don't think we can bring one because of the electricity. Any thoughts?

There is no 'local' rum because this is a desert island (no sugar cane grows here like in the places you've mentioned). Almost every bar has happy hour & serves a multitude of frozen drinks. Why limit yourself to only Pina Coladas?

My suggestion if you are coming through Jamaica on your way down, pick up a bottle of fine Jamaicain rum in one of the duty free stores. It is really in-expensive (even for the good stuff). We did that 4 weeks ago on our way down.
Otherwise every store in Bonaire seems to have a good selection. There is even Cuban rum that is pretty good.

There is lots of rum ot be found at great prices in the local markets....As for a blender, where are you staying? Perhaps they can arrange one for you...if not, we have a number of places where they can be found for very little $.

I know the Divi timeshare units have blenders in the kitchens. Have a wonderful time! You will fall in love with Bonaire and all that she has to offer. Carole

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. Had I been thinking, of course I would have realized there could be no local rum -- glad to hear it's readily and inexpensively available though. As to the blender, as per suggestion, I contacted Marion at Coco Palm Garden to see if they could provide one. Alas no, so we may bite the bullet and buy one -- we are not really into bars, even on vacation, and are usually pretty tired after a day of wind, sun and water. Marion told me an amazing (to me) thing though. Evidently past guests of Coco Palm Garden have bought blenders and other items, and make a habit of leaving them there with the managers for future visits. This says a lot to me about the place, and about Bonaire itself. Now we are even more excited!
