Makes sense because they are cousins of the shark, which has been used for leather for quite some time. I see no problem unless they are being fished exclusively for their skin. The thing that really trips my trigger are shrimp boats that scrape the reef and kill multitudes of "junk" fish. Rays, puffers, turkey fish and the like are dumped along with comercial fish and shrimp on board the shrimper, sorted and finally dumped overboard. Some ok but most dead or dieing. Last time I was in Mexico the beach at LaManzinilla was covered with thousands of "junk" fish after the shrimpers went by, such a shame.

Sting ray wings are apparently quite edible and used by some chefs. Hopefully any harvesting of the skin is accompanied by havesting of the meat.

If they use the whole animal, I see no problem, no wasting. What really disgutes me is when sharks are fished only for their fins, they sharks are caught, fins cut off, then the shark is thrown back in the ocean. Disgusting.

I'd be curious if any studies have been done on the long-term health of the stingray population - can is sustain this type of fishing? I hope its not like so many other fish stocks where the only time studies are done is when the population has collapsed, and recovery is not even a for sure thing.
