Awhile back, someone on BT recommended a plug in mosquito repellant you can buy at Cultimara. Sounded like it worked well in the bedroom at night. I don't get bothered, but my husband and daughter get clobbbered. Can anyone tell me more about this product or something else that works better than regular spray-on stuff?

Hi, Joy! I am a real mosquito magnet so I take a plug in repellant with me. You can buy the ball that plugs into the wall socket then you put a small tablet on a heat pad, the fumes kill the critters. It is possible to buy these at camping shops before you come, I have even found them on the 'end of aisle' travel displays in suprmarkets. They work quite well in smaller areas like bedrooms. However we also leave a mosquito coil burning in our living area. These are spirals of a chemical that you light then leave smouldering and last hours. These work well too. I ended up with 83 bites after a delay at the airport due to us getting to Bonaire but the luggage staying in Curacao so remember to put on spray before leaving the aircraft at night! Hope this all helps. Julia

Joy,

The original post sounds like miine. Julia has said it all, more than I knew about stateside availability. On Bonaire, the burner and coils are from the same manufacturer. Not sure if one is more effective than the other for a larger room. I used the burner under the bed at night, before going to bed-- the 'squitoes seemed to hide there in the daytime, in the dark.

Thanks, Glen:
Coming from New England, I'm familiar with the mosquito coils. Under the bed sounds like a good idea. Even though we have the sliders closed to the bedroom, the little buggers find their way in and they are smaller and faster than the NE variety! One of my favorite things about being in Bonaire is listening to the breeze outside my window at night...but my poor husband gets bitten all over if I do. I'll be ready this year!

FYI Here's something I ran across last spring. I was shore diving off Grand Bahama, wife was spending the time on shore reading. She got hit REALLY bad by no-see-ums (sand fleas or could have been chiggers). Poor girl was just covered with bites and for days nothing would stop the itching, until we noticed that all bites she had under her arms didn't itch and had gone away. The zinc hydro whatever in the deoderant had dried the bites out and stopped the itching. Rubbed deoderant on the other bites and it worked, no more itching and within a day just red spots!

...and I'll bet she smelled really good too! LOL - thanks for the tip, Clint - the no-see-ums in many tropical locales get me, too.

Now, if you spray insect killer on the screen, the little bodies just pile up inside and outside the screen.
