Well,
I finished Don't Stop the Carnival by Herman Wouk last night. At first I found the book a little bit slow, but I was soon very much into it. The first thing I really noticed about the book is that is was very obviously written a long time ago (in the 60's I think). The attitudes towards race and the USSR for example. As I was reading as well, I found it startling that there were so many similiaties to Bonaire - either that or I was simply linking the two because I was recently on Bonaire. A lot of what happens in the book I really could see happening to Bonaire. For people who do have the imagine of the Caribbean as a complete paradise, this book will open their eyes - the Caribbean is not a warmer part of the US.

Overall I enjoyed reading the book a lot. I didn't care for the ending however. It seemed to me as though the author got tired of writing so ended it quickly (I won't say any more so as not to ruin it for the next reader).

Anyways, its time to send it to its next destination. Please let me know if you want it. Someone had posted on the previous thread that they wanted it, so they'll get first dibs if they're still interested.

Darryl

Darryl,
I feel the same way whenever I read the Carnival! Herman writes that any references to people or places are just by chance but think about the "1000 Steps to Nowhere", ring a bell? I definitely think that Norman Paperman traveled to Bonaire!!! :)

Joan and I both thought it was a great book but agree with Darryl on the ending. It is a must read for anybody who has been to Bonaire.

Hi Darryl, I have that book too. I started it and found it to be slow also so I did not continue to read it. After reading your comments on it I think I will start it again. I am heading to Bonaire in a few weeks so this is a great time to pick it up again. Thanks for your thoughs on the book.
Sandy
