My husband and I are considering, for our annual winter trip to the Caribbean, going to Bonaire for the first time.

That was our first question too! We loved the Plaza. Check out this link from when my husband wanted to know about sand!

I'm getting the impression that the beaches are private to the resorts they are in front of. Is that the case or can we go anywhere when we arrive next Saturday? (Heavy rain and gale force winds here in the U.K. with flood warnings in certain parts. Also earthquakes in Manchester the last 2 days! We're not used to that sort of thing here!). Can't wait to leave for Bonaire on Friday, Pat

Pat, when I was at Divi last year, you could use their beach, but they charged a fee (I think $5.00) for chair rental.

I think you can use Plaza's beach too for a fee. There is a public beach that runs on the Western side toward the south. Do any of you know the name of where I'm referring to? The one with the blue benches?

Windsock!is the name of that beach, just past the airport, is that the one you mean?

We stayed at the Divi. But never had time to lay out on the beach. The beaches are made up of dead coral. If you have a thick beach towel you might be okay. We drove around the island and there were several beautiful beaches to my opinion. All the shore dives beaches were great. Windsock also had a nice beach, with the airplanes flying in was neat. But no powder soft sand exept in front of the resorts and they were small.

The beach near windsock is actually Donkey Beach, there are two divesites there, Windsock and North Belnem at the southern end of the beach.

Donkey Beach is one of the names used but the actual official name is Playa Palu Mangel which means mangrove tree.
