Is anyone planning on going to DEMA next month? Dan Senie (co-operator of the WebCams) & I will be there from Oct. 20th to the 26th (25th for Dan) walking the aisles (and I'm speaking at a Dive Travel Conference on the 21st).

If enough folk from here are going to be there, you interested in a BonaireTalk dinner one night?

Speak up now!

Jake

Hi Jake,

I am going to be at Dema and would enjoy getting together with you and others for a BT Dinner.

DEMA is the Dive Equipment Manufacturers Association. Or named something like that. DEMA has a big trade show in Las Vegas every year. For dinner with Jake (and Linda?) and a bit of BT'ing I might make the trip there.

I guess I will have to sit this one out. I already have enough lost wages :)!!!

Jake, I hope Tom and I get to see you in March. We are going to be in Bonaire during the Searovers and you will probably be in Boston!!! I really enjoyed the SeaRovers last year and was planning to make it an annual thing but, I guess I would rather be in Bonaire for the first two weeks of March!!!! :)

Linnea,

Linda's not going - she does not care for Las Vegas in any way shape or form.

How about the evening of Friday the 25th of October at a place to be determined?

Jake

I have to work Fridays (I need to save my vacation days for Bonaire next year) and if I leave right from work I won't get there until 10pm or so, depending on traffic. Saturday lunch or dinner would be best, if you are free of other obligations.

Saturday is after the show, and usually when most folks leave (Dan leaves late Friday night, for example). However I will be in town then, but from 8am to 5pm I'm taking a course (how to be an instructor for PADI's new CPR/First Aid/Oxygen course). Free for dinner that night before I too fly off at about 11pm...

Jake,

My brother-in-law is the general manager at the Mon Ami Gabi. I'd be happy to get yall set up over there. Great food and you can watch the dancing fountains at the Bellagio from there. When I was there last year Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were dining there. It is right next to the Paris Las Vegas. http://www.monamigabilasvegas.com/

Just let me know.

Jake :
I would love to meet up at DEMA. And I am a "Lettuce Entertain You" Silver frequent Dinner, so I know the restaurant you're speaking of.
Wednesday night after 6PM works for us, or Thursday before the Chippendale show we're going to at 7:30.
I'll be there with my business partner Marci.

Natasha, and anyone else reading - the BT Meet at DEMA is on, on Wednesday, October 23rd, for dinner, at a place yet to be determined. I've received a couple of e-mails from folks about coming, and Wednesday seems to work all around.

The place Kay suggested does look good - not sure if its fare meets everyone's needs though - Dan is a Vegan (no animal products), for example...

Restaurant suggestions for the meeting location gladly accepted however!

Jake

What happened to Mon Ami Gabi? I could sit all day watching the fountains at Bellagio's.
I was really up for that. But Wednesday at around 7:30 or 8PM will still be good for us, anywhere you pick.
I must have missed the place Kay suggested.

That place has my first vote.

Ok Can you tell I'm excited about Dema? I love Vegas even though I don't gamble much. Just love the big swimming pools, the 'stay up all night stuff' and the shows. Love the dancing waters, the free volcano eruption at the Mirage, and the battling ships, at Treasure Island.
Anyway,
There was Garlic Spinach, Backed Ratatouille, and Garlic mushrooms on the menu. Will that work for Dan?

Hi Folks,

Where ever you all want to eat is fine by me.

Jake our mutual friend from Mass. can not make it as his schedule is full months ahead of the show.

The garlic spinach and mushrooms sound tasty.

If Dan has any suggestions I am always open to vegan meals.

Grrr, City Search doesn't cover the city of Lost Wages. They're my usual source for finding vegetarian and vegan cuisine.

As for what works and what doesn't it's often the preparation that matters. I have extreme reactions to dairy and animal products, most especially dairy fats. Chefs need to watch the use of butter and cheese most especially, as well as lard (rendered from pigs), oleo (rendered from cows), gelatin (rendered from animal bones) as well as the more obvious meats, eggs, and dairy products. Fried foods are often a risk as the frying oil may be animal based, or used to fry animal-based products.

I looked at the online menu for the restaurant mentioned above. I'd really need to talk/email/fax the executive chef to find out if they could accomodate me. I've got a nice page that says "I am Vegan" and goes on to fully define that. I've also got flash cards with the same text in 20 languages.

I was last in Vegas in May 1997, so my knowledge of the restaurant scene out there is quite dated. I used to go out at least once a year for trade shows.

I am a bit disappointed that like so many other parts of the country, there are many chain restaurants in Vegas. This is an unfortunate trend.

Hi Dan,

If you have not already - check out

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Las+Vegas+Vegetarian+Dining

There are a lot of dead ends, but there are a number of resturants which say they offer vegetarian.

Hope to meet you in Vegas.

When I was in Vegas in April, I went to the Pearl restaurant at the MGM Grand, and it was fantastic! One of the best Chinese meals I've ever had. I'm a bit more tolerant of dairy and meat ingredients than Dan is, but I believe everything I had would have been legal for him, too. So that's another possibility. Nice decor, and the waitstaff was attentive without being pushy. Lots of yummy non-veg stuff for the carnivores in the group, too -- one of my coworkers had an amazing duck dish that the waiter prepped right at the table -- very nice... Blew my food budget for the day (my employer has limits on what you can spend per-meal and still get reimbursed, and this meal came out about $5 over the per-DAY rate! :) but it was worth every penny... yum!

I'm easy - as long as the place isn't called "Mushrooms, Squash, Brains, Tongues, Barracuda, and Monkey Parts", I'll find something to eat :-)

Of the ones mentioned above, Coyote Cafe is excellent (I think that's in the MGM Grand) but very pricey; the Chinese restaurant near the British Pub at the MGM is also very good (I think that's the Dragon Court); I think I've also been to Ghandi, and that was reasonable).

Of course, let's not forget Spago's in the Caesar's Walk area :-)

Anyhow, you all decide...

I'll be staying at the MGM Grand, so anything in there, would make it extra convenient for me.
But, I think it has to be up to Dan. So Dan, you pick the place you can eat, and we'll all find something.

Dan & I will be at the Flamingo Hilton's timeshare section - we'll have a car, and can always grab the monorail from Bally's over to the MGM as well... (or does it go even further up the strip than Bally's now?)

Dan - we're all awaiting your decision... :-)

Jake:
We think the monorail goes to NY NY which as you know, is right across the street from the MGM. But we're not 100% on it.
Just for the record Marci is voting for anything in the MGM since we will not have a car. Also Wednesday is our biggest day at DEMA. Jake what will the subject be that you're speaking on, Monday?
Tom where are you staying?

There's an Embassy Suites near the Convention Center. Sheesh - don't go to Vegas for a few years and everything changes :-)

Natasha, as of November 1998, the monorail went only between the MGM and Bally's. I know they had plans to extend it along the entire strip though.

Dan - make a decision! :-)

Dan:
I'm assuming you sent your letter out to Mon Ami Gabi. Maybe send it to Coyote Cafe too. I've been hearing more good things about that one too.
Anyway, no hurry. We still have quite a few days. I wouldn't want to see you getting sick at the table!
Here's the monorail route.
Monorails
Travel the Las Vegas Strip with the help of four free monorails that run between Bally's and the MGM Grand, the Monte Carlo and the Bellagio, Treasure Island and the Mirage, and Excalibur and Mandalay Bay (with a stop at the Luxor).

Jake:
What are you speaking about at the travel show part?

Our mutual friend Bill "O" turned me onto the Convention Center Embassy Suites. With the entrance to DEMA in the new southern addition.

1. It is closer to the show than the Hilton.
2. It is cheaper. Save $ for Bonaire trip in Feb.
3. Suite versus a room.
4. Do not have to go through casinos (see #2).

I was on the phone to DEMA San Diego this morning. For the heck of it, I asked them where DEMA will be next year.
I was kinda surprised by the answer.
October 8th to the 11th in Miami.
I hope the weather cooperates.

Can anyone tell it's been a busy week in Massachusettts? This is the first time I've had a chance to read BT all week. Yes, Jake has been pestering me about it.

For those who don't realize, DEMA isn't open to the general public. It's a trade show for the dive industry. Caribbean Webcams is a member of DEMA.

As for restaurants, I really haven't had a chance to think much about it. I guess going with Faith's suggestion will be fine. I appreciate the posting of veg restaurants, Natasha. Will be helpful while we're out there.

I have to echo Jake's comments about Vegas changing. I've not been there in 5 years, though used to go every year for one trade show or another. It's always fun to see what people can dream up when money is no object.

Miami next year, eh? Sounds good. Might have to arrange to do some diving in the Keys before or after the conference.

Dan,

By "Faith's suggestion" do you mean the Pearl restaurant at the MGM Grand?

Either way, can we get a tally of numbers of who all will be going on Wednesday, October 23rd, and set a time (I'd suggest 6:30pm as a good time to have dinner :-) ).

#1 - Dan
#2 - Jake
#4-9 - Linda Householder & crew (sent me a message off-line)

Tom, Natasha?

(Natasha, if the Pearl is it, since you're at the MGM can you make the reservation? Maybe see if they have a private room they can squeeze us into?)

Here's a write up from Pearl's.
A modern Chinese restaurant with Western flair, Pearl serves authentic Chinese cuisine with influences from the Canton and Shanghai provinces. Pearl specializes in live seafood and features a constantly changing menu that takes advantage of rare and unique seasonal offerings.

Pearl offers four tasting menus designed to tempt even the most mercurial palates. Signature items from the menu include Asian Bouillabaisse, Shark Fin and Dungeness Crab Spring Rolls and a Steamed Maine and Australian Lobster Tasting.
Desserts at Pearl also are a departure from the traditional offerings of Asian restaurants and feature strictly French Pastries.
Signature Dishes
Asian Bouillabaisse
Shark's Fin and Lobster Spring Rolls
Australian and Maine Lobster Tasting
Hours of Operation
Dinner: 5:30pm – 10pm

Average check
$65

It's considered "Fine Dining" So I'm not sure if a jacket is required for the men. I will call and find out, unless Faith knows for sure.
Also note the $65.00 ..is that OK with everyone?
If so, just give me the count on who will be going and I'll guarentee the reservation to my room.
Anything is fine for Marci and I. But 6:30 will not work for us. 7:30 will.
Thanks!

Here's the Coyote Cafe write up.
Sounds friendly and casual.

Hand-painted coyotes, lizards and other southwestern motifs, transport café diners to the desert; the more elegant Grill Room next door has the rich feel of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mark Miller won the prestigious James Beard Award as “Best Chef in the Southwest” and the food in the two restaurants is a true testimony to the award. The Grill Room features different entrees every month, however the “Cowboy” rib steak is a permanent fixture. No meal is complete here without one of the many fresh-fruit margaritas and custom-blended pineapple rum daiquiris. The Coyote Café received a 1999 “Award of Excellence” by Wine Spectator for its wine list.

Signature Dishes
Breakfast blue corn pancakes
Portobello mushroom tamales
Pear cajeta gingerbread with vanilla ice cream

Well Jake, that makes three of us - Coronas all around?;-{)} Actually, I will have an Ice Tea, someone else will have to drink my Corona for me.

See you all at Coyote's if not before - safe journeys to all.

Okay, Natasha - based on having dined with Dan many times I think he can manage very well with the Veggie Burrito, and I know they can take care of other things if Dan makes requests ahead of time :-)

Please, go ahead and book it at the Coyote Cafe for 6:30pm next Wednesday.

Updated counts:
#10 -> 12: Tom, Bart, Roeland
#13 -> 17: Pascal (Photo Tours), Chris & Jessie Armacost, Tom & Becky Starkweather (by e-mail to me)
#18 -> ?: Natasha & Crew

If they can arrange a private room that would be great. Based on my past dining experiences there, I'd guess at a $20-40/person budget depending on food consumption (sans alcohol, their margarita, which are very good, would be extra) - they won't do separate checks however, a group as large as ours will automatically have gratuity added as well. So, someone bring a calculator :-)

Jake

I was hoping posting the menu would bring more people out.
Ha! Maybe I should post the dessert menu too?

So, we're up to 18 with Marci & I? Is that right Jake? Chris( The manager at Coyote's) said he usually has 22 for the private rooom, but if we want it, its ours. I told him we're a loud bunch and tucking us away is probably a good idea for the rest of the restaurant to survive.
The group's name is under "Scuba Group"
But it's for 7:30 and not 6:30. Is that a problem for anyone?

Natasha, shame, shame!!! You guys are the 'BonaireTalkers'!! Descriptive, too, for those forgetful ones; lots of 'Scuba Groups' at DEMA. ;–)

Natasha - I agree with Glen :-)

But, seriously, any chance for 7pm, you think?

Once we're firm, I'll notify all those that e-mailed me.

You and Marci would be numbers 18 and 19 - so we're up to 19 at present.

Jake

Will you guys forgive me if I post the dessert menu? Actually, the appetizers look good too.
I ate at the Coayote Cafe in Sante Fe, New Mexico, but never in Vegas. Looking forward to meeting everyone, and eating there again.
Marci and I have a 5:30 appointment, hence the 7:30 dinner being best for us. But if you want 7PM to make a 9PM show, I understand. We can miss the appetizers this time, and come in when we can.

I meant to add 'ENJOY', a proper shout. I am sure the attendees will forgive you in return for the dessert menu; have to think about the added torture value myself. :–)

Didn't realize you had a prior commitment. Let's keep it for 7:30pm (but change the group name to "BonaireTalk" so no one steals our spots!!!)

Dessert menu would be fun!

I'll change the name but I have to tell you this ,,
Ready?
The person I made the reservation with had a hard time spelling "Scuba". I had to spell it for him. He should have a field day with "Bonaire."
Dessert menu coming soon.

So, attendees, be prepared for a phonetic spelling!!! Likely no duplication of party names this time!!! I'm jealous. :–)

Are we there yet? I guess not, so here's another update.
The room we are in is called the "Adobe Room" so you can ask for it that way also.
Because we now have a private room, that takes us out of the cafe part of the restaurant, and their menu, that I posted, and into the grill part and their menu.
When I heard that I said, wait we needed that vegetarian burrito to be a choice. Chris went and talked to the chef while I stayed on hold, and the chef said he can make a special grilled vegetable platter for all the veg heads. (I was a veg head for 6 years myself. My first trip to Philly, having a Philly Cheese Steak, changed that for life)
Anyway, will that for you Dan the Man? If not, we can change back to the Cafe and their menu.
Has eating one dinner ever been so hard?
Ha!

Natasha,

Dan's not an ordinary vegetarian. He's a Vegan - anything that ever came from something that swam, crawled, or walked (or would have had it been healthy) is verboten, off limits to his digestive system. So, no dairy, no eggs, no animal stock (bouillion), etc. Just veggies, fruits, non-animal fats, etc.

I'm sure a veggie plate would be okay, but Dan should be able to arrange something he needs with the chef, I would think, if he wants something more.

I'm fine for the restaurant menu (although I do recall from past dining that if one whines and wheedles enough, they let you get some things from the cafe menu).

Jake

I sent off email several days ago to the restaurant, but have received no reply. As Jake mentioned, my diet is beyond vegetarian. I'm not a militant vegan, just have health issues which make it essential that I avoid animal derivatives.

As Jake can attest, we've had fabulous meals in restaurants with talented chefs. We've found most well-trained chefs find it fun and challenging to work from a set of ingredients or parameters, and create something interesting. Faith and I have had the best meals when we tell the chef "make something vegan, ask us if you have any questions, but surprise us with something tasty." Gives the chef a chance to do something out of the ordinary, and have some fun.

Hopefully I'll hear something back from Coyote soon.

Oh Gee.. I didn't anything to deserve such kind words. Just made a few phone calls, spelled a few words. :) It was my pleasure. Thank you everyone.
I'm sure It will be a great time.
Dan: If you don't hear anything soon, do you want the phone number to call them?

Natasha, please do send me the phone number. I'll either call or stop by the restaurant once I get to Vegas.
