Last time I was in Curacao, I bought a book called "Landhuizen van Curacao en Bonaire", by Dolf Huijgers and Lucky Ezechiels, published in 1991. This book has photos of many of the Landhuis of the two islands, and seems to be a labour of love, but then my Dutch is very rudimentary. Landhuis are (IMHO) beautiful old houses from the past in Bonaire and Curacao. I've seen a number of them, some restored, some not, on Curacao and Bonaire. If my translation of this book is correct, the Curacao landhuis were mostly built by individual families/farmers, while those on Bonaire were constructed by the Dutch East India Company.
Not familiar with the buildings I'm talking about? If you've driven by Landhuis Karpata (castor bean plant farm) or gone through the park to Slagbaai (slaughter bay - for goats), and seen the yellow buildings there, you've seen a landhuis.
So, my 1991 book lists nine landhuis on Bonaire (excuse my translation). From the south end of the island to the north:
1: Rode Pan (Red Slave) salt trade
2: Oranje Pan (Chogogo huis???) salt trade??
3: Witte Pan (White Slave) salt trade
4: Yatu Baku (aloe vera production)
5: Washikemba - ?
6: Guatemala - ?
7: Bakuna - ?
8: Karpata (castor oil production)
9: Slagbaai (goat meat production)

So where am I going with this...(Bas, Michael, Ellen, Jale, Linda...) Does anyone know what Washikemba, Guatemala or Bakuna produced? Most of these landhuis (excuse my poor traslation) seem to have been built after "den Engelese periode" around 1816. Is this true? Is Oranje Pan huis the one between Red Slave and White Slave called Chogogo (flamingo house)?
Also, the 1991 pictures of Yatu Baku, Washikemba, Guatemala and Bakuna show the buildings disintegrating, and a huge cast iron kettle for boiling up the aloes at Yatu Baku. Does anyone have more recent pics of these locations? When I'm back on Bonaire in November, I'd like to visit these landhuis if I can. Directions might be helpful, the maps I have are a bit in conflict....thanks.....

Oh, by the way, does anyone know if any of the Bonaire landhuis other than Slagbaai (post Lenny) are being restored? Karpata seems to have fallen on low budget times when I checked in July, and (happily I hope) folks are living in Rode Pan, Oranje Pan(?) and Witte Pan. Thanks.

That should be "Jake" not "Jale".....I'll have to find a GIF from Rusty's treasure trove to demonstrate a Homer Simpson "duh"...

Not asking for much, are you Fiona? :-)

I think the three you mentioned were all Aloe. But, perhaps Michael could confirm?

As far as pics and other historical information goes, you may want to contact the Cultural department here on Bonaire - SKAL - Hubert Vis is the head. I think you can reach them via +599-7-175330 x525.

Jake
