Awesome, Fiona!! I would love to take a small core sample of that first tree to see how old it is. Given Bonaire's climate, I bet it's ancient! I KNOW where the second one is taken, but the name escapes me. Amazing how a tree can take root in that soil and survive!

Hi Fiona,

Great pictures. I really have to guess for these places. Is the tree along the touristroad?

I guess the second picture is somewhere south, between the white and red slavehuts. Atlantic?

Hope someone can paste more pics, I am all out of digital pictures for now.

Henk

Fiona, I believe the tree is on the road near the mangroves. It is beautiful. The view east of there is into the water at the mangroves.
Can't wait till September!!

The big old tree is at the end of Lagoen road. There's a couple more of these spectacular trees on the island. Similar trees can be found at boca onima and boca washikemba. The one at washikemba is my favorite. From the base it extents about 100ft. downwinds!!! With no other trees anywhere near....trippy tree.
For the second picture I agree with Henk, somewhere south between red slave and white slave.

Here's one a bit different.... mini

I don't know. I think the one at the end of Lagoen road is even bigger. What do say Fionia?

The tree is a mistery, looking at the road I still think it is somewhere on the rightside of the tourist road. But I can't remember seeing it it. Althoug the road to lagoen look more or less the same.

Bas his picture is an easy one (for) me. I had to spend some minutes on the opposit site of the road. (It was just cramp) It is on the Kaya Soeur Bartola.

Hi folks: Well, Bas, you're right, the big tree is at Lagoen near the site of that new restaurant-to-be. The second tree is between red and white slave, at a place Jessie Armacost's shoredive book calls "Soft Coral Garden". The little tree is described as a reference point for the dive. Even if it wasn't the tree from the book, the dive was fantastic anyway...

Let me guess... Top van de Brandaris? :)

Right!

I can really advise it for everybody on your last day when you can't dive anyway. To climb the Brandaris. It is about 250 meters (ca 830 ft) high. But if you go, go early and take plenty of water. From the top you can see all the way to the salt works in the south.

Henk

Henk, what's the visibility like up there? I believe you that you can see for a long distance, but is the air clear or is it hazy? Is it worth carrying photogear up there?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Kitty @ CrystalVisions on Thursday, August 8, 2002 - 12:39 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

I guess that if you are standing on the Brandaris, which is in the North-West and you can see all the way to the salt works in the South that the visibility should be quite good (I mean, it's from one side of the island to the other).

It depends entirely on the day you are going if you have crystal clear or hazy vision.... It can rain quite heavily in the NorthWest, which means that you won't see *anything* that's in the distance. But then, rain showers tend to move on quickly... most of the time....

It's a matter of luck, I guess... So yes, bring your gear with you - it's a backpack anyway... :-)

If you are lucky enough to be there on a very clear day you can see curacao, aruba and venezuela!!! You can see curacao once in a while also from the top of other hills like above rincon, republiek... Once I saw aruba too, from republiek. Seemed unreal but must have been aruba as I could clearly see curacao and ships(big oil tankers) beyond curacao. Then there was aruba behind and a bit to the right of curacao. Never seen venezuela but have heard from several people that sometimes you can see it from the brandaris.

We had a little rain when we went up there, but that was actually quit nice to cool down. We had great visability, although. We could see the coast of Curacao. But we took some great pictures.

Will see if I scan some more in the near future.

Looks like 3 doggies to me. Must be Dalmatian point (chuckle).

I don’t think there are a lot of places on Bonaire with a sandy beach and palm trees other than at one of the resorts. I’m stumped.

Oke, for the first time I have no idea. East-side Washington Park. But can't remember seeing the big rock next to the truck.

Could also be somewhere at Spelonk or Washikemba. So I don't know.

Good one!

I agree with East side. But otherwise, I haven't a clue. I don't think that's a rock. Maybe the remains of a building?

Come on.. narrow it down. It is east coast... so pic is taken facing north... can you park north end of spelonk?? ;-) It is a rock in the back ground. Too narrow to be one of the parks east side boca's except for boca chikitu.. but does the water get so high up there??? ;-) ............ ???? hehehe :-)

I will make a guess but not with many confindence: There is a new stop in Washington Park opposite of seru grandi. Called: Blow Hole (if I remember correctly).

It could not be south, the bacground is to high.
I thought of south of Lac-Bay but I can't remember the rock and the perspective with car and mangroves doesn't make sence.

Washikemba, south of Lagoen. Haven't been there in a long time. Though I don't remember the water coming that high. So:
Blow Hole in W.P.

? Well ???

Anyone?

"Suplado" on the southside of Washikemba inlet looking across the inlet at the truck and ironrock on the northside.

I can't miss two in a row, I think I recognize the bird. When I was there, the (same) bird was flirting with him/herself in front of my car mirror. I don't want to give it away so soon, and let others guess as well.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say

I saw my little flirting bird at Put Bronswinkel, also in Washington Park. So that will be my guess. But it is in WP.

It's at Pos Mangel. Put Bronswinkel is a bit similar but has different vegetation.
