My husband and I are heading to Bonaire in 2 weeks. We were there for 3 days two years ago and loved it so much, we are returning for a week. The question I have is about crime. I have read a lot of tips about vehicle theft issues, but I can't find anything about the safety of walking at night. Last time we were there, I hadn't really done much research on Bonaire before we left because we were just tagging the 3 days at the end of our Aruba vacation. So, being blissfully ignorant, we didn't realize there were any issues until we got home and started reading this bulliten board. We stayed at the Plaza and really enjoyed walking into town, or to Richards for dinner\drinks, and were looking forward to doing that again. Is that safe to do or were we doing something that we shouldn't have been, and shouldn't do again. We are from Washington,DC so we're not trying to blow the whole crime thing out of proportion, but, just want to know what is smart to do and what is not.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Beth

Beth,

You and your husband will be fine walking into town and around Bonaire at night. You'll see many others doing the same thing. Like anywhere don't leave things in your vehicle to tempt the dishonest people.
Have a wonderful trip!

I feel safer in Bonaire than I do in New Jersey. Carole

Beth,
Although I have never been to Bonaire (going for my honeymoon in Sep :) ), I have done a great deal of reseach on Bonaire. As a whole Bonaire is on of the - if not the - safest placest in the Carribbean. Although there is some crime, it is usually limited to vehicle thefts on divers out shore diving. There are some break-inns an resorts, but this is rare as well. I can't even recall reading about any voilent crime against tourists now that I think about it.

I think a lot of the problem is that people here about these vehicle break-inns, and pass the news along. So it gets spread along, and because it is repeated so much, it seems much more of a problem than it actually is. If you talk to the peopl who live there (and there are quite a few on this board), they will all say the say thing - that Bonaire is extremely safe.

I would much rather walk around Bonaire than pretty much anywhere in the US.

Hi Beth,

Our daughter is now 17, but ever since she was 12, we've let her play pool with some local kids in town. Never a problem. My wife..who is extremely stunning (I hope she reads this) has never experienced any harassment while walking through town during the day or night.

You can feel great about your personal safety on Bonaire. The walks along the boulevard next to the sea, from City Cafe going north are great at night.

Hope you enjoy your trip!

Scott

Hi! I've never feared for the people on Bonaire, but for the free roaming dogs in the neighborhood! They may be perfectly harmless, but when I was out for an afternoon walk, and was approached by 5 or 6 barking dogs,it did make me feel somewhat unsettled. But that didn't seem to be a problem in town!

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm glad to hear that walking to dinner is something we can still do. We are looking forward to our second, and longer, trip.

Hi Beth,

We just returned home today 8/01 from 7 days in Bonaire. We walked, we snorkeled, we swam, we shopped, we drove and we never NEVER felt threatened or the least bit uncomfortable. The locals are lovely people, just take the same common sense precautions you would anywhere.

Lola
