Pack some food in a good Coleman, etc., and bring it down in baggage. Store it on island and then it will be waiting for your next trip. :–)

or (and I am thinking about doing this myself) buy one of those new ones that are on wheels....they look just like wheeled carry-on bags. You can pack "whatever" in it as a carryon and then empty and use it as a cooler when you get there.

I, personally, don't think styrofoam is a good idea for Bonaire...seems as tho there might be a lot of coolers left behind when vacationers depart the island...I don't think they are set up to "recycle" too much yet, and this might add to that burden. The other suggestions posted earlier sound like wonderful alternatives! You can always pack treasures that you might purchase while visiting Bonaire into the cooler for the ride home, too! Have a great trip!! Carole

Michael, you are such a sweetheart! I didn't want to spill the beans without your consent! LOL. I am now putting in our "reservation" for the cooler and rib steaks, etc, for next year, OK by you?? LOL. Thanks for everything you have done for us so many times...you are truly a special person to us. Carole

Hi Michael,
I'll bring you the New York Times. We will be there August 7-14th staying at the Divi. I saw in Burdines the pull behind cooler didn't have time to check out the price I'll have to go in Monday and see if they still have them and how much they are. I haven't seen them any other place. I had thought about taken a normal cooler down but when I looked in the archives it didn't seem like such a good idea with the airlines, etc.
Bye,
Ida

We have taken a collapsable cooler minus the hard plastic insert for the past two visits. It folds up pretty flat, not taking up too much room in our luggage. Debbie

Deborah, you are right! I forgot about the great collapsable coolers. We do have one, too, but our luggage has been so full each trip with goodies for everyone we know on Bonaire that we don't have enuff room to pack it! LOL. They are wonderful, however...great suggestion for Ida. I hope she reads your note. They come in different sizes, too. Some hold a twelve pack of soda/beer and some food and some hold more. They work wonderfully, too. We used to use one in Aruba all the time and the ice remained frozen all day long in the hot sun...worked wonderfully. Carole

LLBean has a backpack cooler that we have been using for years on our trips to the Caribbean. Holds quite a lot in two different compartments and has three outside pockets as well. My husband uses it as his carryon -- fits just fine in the overheads. We can take lots of good frozen stuff down and have taken lots of fun things home as well as laundry!

we have been taking the flexible coolers to boniare for years...buy one at Walmart... we leave the hard plasitc insert in it and pack small cd player inside and/or food... I usually haul down a case of beer also... never had a problem

I see the flexible and collapsible coolers at the Safeway and other retail stores in this area. It looks easy to pack.

I find that the soft cooler that I have will leak all over the place when the ice melts. Is it just mine or is that a problem with all of that type of cooler?

Darlene,
I have that problem too. Putting the ice into a ziplock bag (or two) helps, but you're still going to have the condensation.

OK, I have a question related to ice chests (sort of :)) I have read that when you leave your vehicle for a shore dive, you should leave the windows down so that people can see there is nothing of value to steal. What about leaving the cooler? Would it be relatively safe or not (since the windows are down)

We usually just take frozen water bottles and leave them with our towels down by the shore line.

I also use the baggies with the ice. My soft cooler does not leak. Putting a frozen water bottle in a baggie works better and then you have extra water to drink.

Carol & Others:

We always pack a hard cooler which holds about 18 12oz beers (This is so you know the size)It is a one person cooler (Meaning easy for one person to carry)

We pack various stuff in it for the trip down, like maybe masks since it is hard and crush resistant. We then pack gross stuff it for the trip home, like water socks, wet towels, etc.

I always hide the cooler in the scrub when shore diving. Have had same cooler on somewhere near 100 shore dives now with no incident. However, I beleive that if We had not used our heads and left the cooler in plain sight with ice and beer, pop, food, whatever, it would not have made it through all those dives.

Cooler is a must. Use duct tape to sealed it shut, and carry spare duct tape to reseal after various inspections.
