We're going to Bonaire in a few weeks. This will be our second trip there so we are somewhat familiar with the island. When we were last there we bought groceries at a large grocery store (can't remember the name)which was fairly expensive. Towards the end of the trip someone mentioned another grocery store that was cheaper. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy groceries for the most reasonable price?

Judy,
There are 2 "relatively" inexpensive grocery stores (remember Bonaire is an island) east of Lisa Gas: Warehouse and Cash & Carry. Warehouse does not take credit cards. Some stores, such as Cash & Carry, close around lunch time. Some of the produce at Warehouse is pre-packaged in batches; you can buy produce at Cash & Carry by the single unit (e.g., one tomato). The store in town, that you might be thinking about, is probably Cultimara. Also in town are Tropical Flamingo (not inexpensive) and La Huerta (for produce).

The warehouse does take credit cards if you spend over $100 (I believe that's the figure but it could be less)...

Last I heard is that Warehouse had changed its credit card policy, and no longer had a $100 minimum. TIS is also over on that side (just east of Warehouse Bonaire), and has quite reasonable pricing.

The Warehouse still has a minimum, I believe it was $50 as of April.

Matt, did they tell you that? Not that I'm doubting you, however, the manager of Warehouse posted this last year:

News regarding Credit Card payments at Warehouse Bonaire.

After reading all of your remarks and suggestions we decided to change our policy and accept all mayor Credit Cards without any restriction or minimum purchase.

We do ask you to keep in mind that this way of payment seriously infects our costs and we prefer smaller amounts to be paid cash if possible. Only this way we can keep our prices at the low level as they are now.

We want to thank everybody that contributed to this discussion and all together we can make a change as you can see.

So remember; You can do your shopping at Warehouse Bonaire and pay with your credit card if you wish.

We like to welcome you all to do your shopping and try our improved service.

Kind regards,

Michiel Vos
Warehouse Bonaire

Here is the entire thread, it starts out with the 100 buck policy, but Michiel changed his policy after feedback.

Judy, welcome to BT:-) We also like More for Less. They have a good selection of meats at the meat counter, and things we like in the store. Their prices are reasonable, and they have the BEST fresh baked bread daily. You have to get there early to get it as they only make so much, and when it's gone, it's gone!

I think that anyone who was here last year will be surprised how much prices have increased. The strong Euro, high shipping costs and rise in electricity (almost double!) have been rasing havoc on our prices.

Michael, they are out of control in the states too. Premium is almost 5 bucks a gallon, a two weeks ago it was a mere 4.35:-( Food prices have also risen dramatically as well:-( Obviously, not as much as on the island, but we are seeing it everywhere. I'm just glad I don't own a Hummer!

I forgot to mention Tropicana, next to the Napa store, you can buy frozen meats and stuff in bulk, and they have toothbrushes in packs of 12:-)

Boat Chick.

$5.00 dollars a gallon! I am dreaming of that price.

Currently we are around $10 and rising. One garage was charging $18 a gallon last week.

Hi, all!

Antony, where are you living now?

In NJ the premium is about $4.37 per gallon. NJ has the "lowest" gas taxes in place, too. Governor wants to raise our gas tax higher...bad timing!! Carole

Antony (without the h), I had heard that the UK was up to 10 bucks a gallon. Bad thing for us here in the US, we have a crappy public transport system, so we are pretty much stuck driving, I saw some tv show the other day, that in the 70s LA had a mass transit system of subways, etc., set up, and they scratched it. Stupids!

$18???? O...M...G...i know a couple years ago when they were over $3 a gallon, Brian posted it was $6 a gallon in the UK, so I figure you are about double what we are.

Carole, yesterday, it was $4.95 a gallon:-( I bet by the beginning of July it will be $5 a gallon, just in time for the Fourth, and travel. I wonder how many folks will not go anywhere this year. We are staying local again as usualy, and friends come hang with us on the boat and jet ski (boat is desil thank god)

Once again, glad I don't drive a hummer, and my commute to and work is short!

Yes, According to "60 minutes", and it's been at least 15 yrs that this appeared on T V, there was a transit system in L A--- I think it was the 1930's. The article said that Chevron was the main saboteur in it's elimination?

Google "The Great American Streetcar Scandal"--it seems that there were more cities other than L A and more saboteurs than Chevron!

Bill, yes, 60 minutes, that was it, and my dates were way off...lol...

Ron, it's about the same here, or a little higher, thing is, our boat SIPS fuel, so it takes about 30 gallons max for us to get to catalina and back for a weekend. Compare that to the gas boats, especially duel engines, they take about 100 gallons to get over and back! It used to be about 70 bucks round trip for us, now it's about 140. So it has gone up, but it's still dang affordable compared to gas boats!

Sunshine Market across from Divi is a nice little store. The people who run it are very nice. The prices are good.
