Does anyone know anything about the horseback riding trail rides on Bonaire? I looked at The Riding Academy's site, but with children ages 7 and 12 (and three out of four of the family members essentially nonriders), not sure if a four-hour trip makes sense.

I would recommend that you email Marion. You should be able to find her email address on the Riding Academy's website. I had some questions about myself going on this ride and she was extremely helpful and wonderful to deal with. I am an adult with next to no horse riding experience, but really want to try this if I can fit into a group needing 1 more rider. Marion only does groups of 2-5 riders (no more, no less). I'll be on Bonaire May 3-10.

April,

Thanks, I did email the address on the site, and will await the response. We won't be there until August. Enjoy!

Last Sept. I took the trailride to Lac and had a great time.I am not an experienced ridder and did fine, wear sunscreen and a hat, bring a bathing suit or wear it. Marion is a friend of mine and she loves and cares for her horses with her heart. You will get to know that the moment you meet her.
She will put you on one she knows you will be comfortable with and will be comfortable with you.
I know she has helmets for the young ones.
It's a fun experience.

Thanks, Lorraine.

Marion does not seem to have many helmets and the ones she has she says are in bad shape--apparently most people don't use them, she said.

She wants us to bring our own, but that seems a bit excessive when it's such a tiny part of our overall trip and helmets take up so much room!

Not sure how we will resolve it....

Doesn't seem like helmets hold up to the heat very well, at least the ones my daughter had (ok, it was after a summer in LasVegas) actually melted and warped from the heat. Would the helmets 'nest' together in your suitcase if you brought some?

As with dive gear, I prefer to use my own stuff rather than rentals.

The web site for the horses on Bonaire is so beautiful and inviting. I'm sure, helmets or no, you and your family will have a wonderful time!!!

When we were on Bonaire in March my dive buddy wanted to go riding on a non dive day . She called the academy to make arrangements and some how my size came up !!! I was over 200 lbs , no way could I go , I would break her horses !! I am admittedly 225 lbs w/ a few to lose but I am not that big , it must really limit her customer base !! We just laughed and went out to get something to eat !! My wife his about 110 lbs maybe they should average !

Most of Marions horses are under 15 hands. They are not the American quarter horse type, that can carry a significant amount of weight. Granted they could most likely carry 200 plus, but she prefers to keep the limit under 200, and there are plenty of customers that fall into that wieght bracket

As long as friekendel really doesn't contain horsemeat... I think you're ok.

As you can tell, Marion cares a great deal about her horses.
They are not "pack" animals to her.
She cares about the well being of both the ridder and the horse, not just the $.

And that is exactly why I'm hoping to ride on one of her horses, because they are treated so well. I have so much respect for Marion and I haven't even met her yet. But just from emailing some questions to her, it is so easy to see that she really does care ... like Lorraine said, both for her horses and the riders.

{Jack, Pferdewurst is the best...}
Marion cares for her animals like most people care for their beloved house pets or furkids..I commend her. and having owned a horse/barrel pony that was just under 15 hands{14.9) I understand her not wanting anyone over 200 pounds on their backs.. Not safe for the rider or the horse..
