Looneybin, I understand that you will trade a Bonaire - diver's paradise car license plate for one of ours. I will be arriving on June 17th to stay a week (far too short a time). Will be staying at BelMar, how can we get in touch with each other?

Brad, did you know they sell the old license plates in many shops all over the island? They issue new ones every year, I think. A different color every year. They're only like $8.

Thank you Kate, I didn't remember seeing those in the stores. I was looking for other tourist items when I was there two years ago.

Guess what.... airport shop @7$ ran out. I sold him a bunch a while back to restock but they are getting scarse now. Carib Inn still has some. 5$ ea. They donate the full 5$ to charities.. turtles, Klein, maria hoppner... yr choise. Good point Kate....Why go through the trouble of having fun trading them and meet some new folks in the process while you can just buy one in a store.
There's no set period for the plates to change..
86,87,88,89 red on white
90,91,92 white on green
93,94 white on black
95,96,97,98,99 white on red
00,01,02,...??? black on yellow
Aruba is the only country in the world still issuing new plates each year.

The color of the license plates changes whenever a new political party (or coalition) wins control of the island council. Currently it's a coalition of UPB (Green) and PABOSO (Yellow), hence yellow plates. Before that it was PDB (Red) in control. Not sure what the black plates stood for...

I will be arriving at the end of June...if anybody in Bonaire wants to trade a West Virginia plate for Bonaire plate, I'd be happy to oblige. BTW, crooked politicians from WV don't come with the plate

I think thats popular believe, allthough hard to deny sometimes. How would you explain the irregular intervals for changing them. Elections are on a 'schedule'.. every ? years.
Bonaire plates were introduced in 1928. Less than 75 issued for the 30's. Plates changed every year upto 1969 when the stickerbox was introduced.
Divers Paradise slogan introduced 1986.

Yikes! I was only letting Brad know they are (were?) readily available, Bas --- another option, if you will. It's too early to be blindsided by sarcasm! And I do look forward to meeting you too. If you play nice, I'll show you pictures of my new Cooper Mini S.

Well Kate, in that case I apologize for taking the wrong approach to your posting. Guess you just pulled a sensitive string on the wrong day.
I have nothing to gain by trading off my stash of Bon. plates. In fact I loose!! Why would I trade a Bonaire plate that would easily fetch 20 to 25 USD on E-bay for a '2 bucks for a dozen' US plate. (with a few exceptions like a very nice Save wild animals PA. graphic with the head of a tiger)... thanks again, awesome plate!!!!
I'm just trying to be nice and have fun. Not only for myself..but might be a nice bonaire experience for others too I think. Same goes for taking you BT folks out for a different dive/snorkel/hike or whatever trip. I don't ask any money. Just trying to show how nice this island can be. Yet it costs me time, airfills, gas and always stuff a lil cooler with juice and fruit so after the dive we can sit 'n talk about the stuff we've seen and other birds 'n bees. Again no problem because I'm having fun which is well worth the 'investment' and I love to be at these places any time any day... they're beautiful! I only get pissed off when 'you' don't show up!
That all aside I'm just having a few bad days I guess. I found out a few days ago my Mini, apart from the starter motor has a hopelessly fried electric system which I am absolutely clueless about. And I have a very sweet 3yr old little Jack Russel dude on my hands that is slowly slipping through my fingers. The last 3 weeks he wont eat no matter what I cook for him, his blood looks like stained water. The vet says he has tick desease. He's getting antibiotics and booster shots but he doesn't catch on. Last wednesday the vet said he got his last as he's not responding. He's having little bites of this and that... whatever I'm eating. I'm lucky I'm out of a job and can spend time with him feeding him a few bites every hour else he would be gone already. Somehow he's not producing certain bloodcells. My brother had a brother of my dog. He fell sick with the same symptoms (in Holland) His dog died last year despite all his efforts and the high tech vet stuff available there. They never were able to find out what it was after numerous blood tests and even bone marrow tests!! All the symptoms are scaringly similar. And I'm scared too! I dont want to loose him.. he's a wonderful dog with a tireless ballgame, great character, never gives up, super sweet to kids, a great rat catcher. He's a small guy between 4 big dalmatian girls but boy,..does he ever stand out!! Everyone visiting here falls in love with him instantly.

Bas, My sympathies go out to you. I am going through the same kind of thing with my cat KC. She is very old {18} and each morning I wake up and don't want to go down the stairs in fear that she will no longer be with me..I found this poem and I look at it and then look at the cat and say OK one more day....I just hope I don't go one day too much...I hope you can take solice in the poem and I know we will both do the right thing when the time comes.. Your Friend, Freddie

If it should be

If it should be that i grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand
For this day more than all the rest
Your love for me must stand the test

We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come to let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
And please stay with me until the end
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me
Althrough my tail has lost it's waved
From pain and suffering I'we been saved

Please do not grieve-it must be you
Who had this painfull thing to do
We've been close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold back it's tears.

Bas,

The poor little doggie! It's horrible to feel so helpless, you always want to be able to make them feel better, to take good care of them - they give so much love. I've had to say goodbye to a number of doggies, including my old dalmation. I understand your heartache, and feel for you.

Bas,

Sorry to hear about your Jack Russell-- they are such a delightful creature. I am not being heartless when I say, be sure to do the right thing by him. In our society today we are forced to let humans suffer through to a 'natural' death (I recently went through that with my mother and earlier with my father) rather than reducing suffering by 'putting down' the dying (what a lovely term!!) in an inevitable situation. Purely a personal decision for each of us, but mercy for the dying is sometimes harder on a loving survivor!! Hang in!!!

WOWW!!! You all are so nice sending your words of comfort. I'm both amazed and touched! Now I'm even more sorry for being a bit nasty to Kate.. sorry again, uncalled for, you all mean well, should've known.
Went to see the vet again yesterday, more of the same... not getting anywhere... up sh*t creek with no paddles!! With all respect to the vet, he's a very nice man who really understands and tries his best with the means available to him. Unfortunately these are limited. No blood tests can be done :-( So we are not sure what we're up against. He's been adjusting medication to different possible causes. We started against tick desease, when that did not work aiming at Denge. For sure is that he has an internal bacterial maybe partially viral infection that gives him fever. With the fever he stops eating. That explains him living up and developing appetite after his shots. For the times he wont eat I have a big seringe I used for injecting coconuts with rum. Now I use it to squirt mashed food (pate with bouillon) in the back of his mouth.
Strange thing is that this is the 3rd time he's getting like his. The first was minor and he recovered quickly. Second being more intense (last Feb.) lasting longer. All 3 starting with a small abrasion on his right shoulder that developed into a nasty bald spot 1x2" within a day, slowly getting more picky with food untill in after 2-3 days total dislike of any food. Period between these episodes is getting shorter also.
Tomorrow I'm going to sail the Oscarina to Curacao for maintenance. Was gonna stay there and do some diving and some more diving on the way back on Klein Curacao. But I'll return to Bon right away and start making arrangements to either take him myself to Holland or have someone take him and let my family take him to a proper animal hospital there. I think he's still got the strenght to make the journey so instead of waiting till it's too late I'll take this option. At least I'll find comfort in the fact that nothing was left to chance if he won't make it. I don't think he's in pain and suffering other than feeling really shitty. So I dont feel like I'm putting him though something of which he's best off relieved. Already have a house sitter till 6/22. Might need someone for thereafter. If so I'll post it in the accomodation section of BT.
Bas

I've got some more pix you like to see.. they'e cute. These taken Jan '01 when my brother and his wife were visiting with their two dogs.It can get confusing but I'll try LoL
My bro is JW. JW's dogs are Roger & Daisy. Roger is the bro of my JRT named Jack. Daisy is a 'daughter' of Roger. Roger got sick on Bonaire with the same symptoms Jack's got now. Roger died July '01. So it might be Bonaire related, may also be a 'family' thing.... anyhow the pix are cute!

Bas,

I posted some of your dog's symptom descriptions as you wrote them to the newsgroup "rec.pets.dogs.health". I don't usually read it, (I will now) but I think there are vets who read and post there - I know there are horse vets who regularly post to "rec.equestrian".

Maybe one of them can come up with an idea. It can't hurt to see, anyway - and who knows?

Give your little pooch a hug for me.

Is there a vet on Curacao with more facilities than on Bonaire??? Worth a careful check, since you going anyway! Can't be less info in the end.

Bas, it's not that carre (sp?) airborne dog virus that's spreading around aruba, is it? I'm so sorry. We had our dogs vaccinated against it a few weeks ago when Jan read about it in Amigoe--but we had to ask for it specifically; it wasn't offered by the vet even though this is an airborne virus. Oh, my heart is with you. Sorry.

Bas,

I feel as sad and helpless as all the others. I hope some solutions are found. Doesn't sound like there is a lot of time.

When we had some strange conditions with our cat I know our vet referred to the pet scientists at a pet food company. You might want to see if some of the pet food company web sites offer any advice services. The newsgroup suggestion that Susan made looks like a good one. Marshall the resources of the internet.

All the best to your little friend,

Bill

Bas, I am so sorry for your little guy. We have had to say goodbye to 2 of our dogs in the last couple of years from old age, however, he is so young, it is just heartbreaking I am sure. Give him lots of love, and it sounds like you are doing everything you can. Your brothers dog that passed with the same thing, did they come from the same litter? Often some immune problems can be passed on through a line. Take care and give him a big hug for me:)

Hi all,

Thanks again for all the nice words and helpfull hints. Thanks Meryl and Sarah for your e-mails with links for possible solutions!!!
I managed to find someone else to do the sailing to Curacao so I could stay here. Turned out to be a wise move.
I'm happy to report Jack is doing a lot better. Too early to cheer but things are looking lots better compared to last week.
Another vet from Holland had arrived to relieve the couple that works here now so for a week Jack is seen by 3 vets at a time!! Also the vet wants to see us daily now which really helps too. He gets 2 shots every day and 2 pillies. He's responding well. His temperature is stabile and he's eating well again. However there's is still a mayor lack of red blood cells judging by his very pale gums and pale inside of his eye cases.
So in a sense he's running on chemicals.
We've set out a plan. Continue treatment and hope he picks up on producing red blood cells again. As a last resort we'll give him new blood. The vet has taken the blood of a stray dog today that was brought in to be put down. I know this sounds a bit harsh.
If you look at him now you hardly believe he's a very sick dog. He's put on some weight again. He's allert, playfull.. he was playing ball again today :-) He's cleaning himself and interested in the girlies again. Walking instead of dragging himself along. But he's totally out of shape and can't walk very far.
We're spending lots of time together and he gets to go with me most places. He comes along for a drink at Bongo's at night, when I go see a friend and this morning he went fishing with me in the small boat. Caught 4 small tuna and he got very exited each time I reeled one in. He was fascinated by them splashing around in the bait box. I hope by doing stuff with him he gets reactivated sooner.. makes him hungry, thirsty and thus sorta kick starting him. Besides that he may be on his last days... so make the best of those ono!?
Whatever he has exactly we do not know but it seems chronic and is likely to return even harder in a few months. Therefor I don't think I should take him to Holland. Also because they were not able to fix my brothers dog for similar stuff overthere. So rather then stretching it and putting the poor dude though this n that it may be better he gets put down while he still has his dignity...if and when that time comes.
We'll have to wait, hope and see....sofar so good!

Bas, hopefully Jack will continue his recovery. The decision to put down a faithful friend is a very hard one but a loving one. I had to have a horse that I grew up with put down because of illness and had a very difficult time going into that barn for years. Mercifully the snow caved in the barn one winter and I never had to go in it again.

I just got a phonecall from my mother. Looks like she'll be on the same plane as you from A'dam to Bonaire. She's decided I could use a bit of support so she booked a trip of 2 weeks. She'll be traveling with Billy (Bonker??:-) a JRT pup!!!!
At the moment he's 5 1/2 weeks old. I hear he's totally adorable.
It's a bit of bitter sweet... I hope he'll get to be an addition rather than replacement.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the puppy will be in the cabin. But hard to spot as the kennel is in a bag. When my parents come to visit they always bring their (very small) doggies along. In order not to attrackt too much attention to them she made a bag around the kennel. Just her and Billy in the blue bag this time. I'll tell her you'll be on the plane too.

How is your little guy doing?

It looks like we'll be in Bonaire a lot sooner than I expected: I made the reservations today for July 13 through the 20th, at the Habitat. Let me know here or in email how you'd like to get the license plates.
