When we were in Bonaire, George just kept going on about a market on Friday Morning. We didn't buy a lot of "gifts" for everyone before hand, because he was insistent about this. We went, it was great. There's a lot of little "things" made right on the island that are really nice. That is where I got our trinkets to bring home! Signs made from old wood, hand painted. Ceramic/tile kind of things made from a process that just is beautiful (I forget what this process is called...?...) Her name is Wilma Busker, I think. This woman is good!
And glass things that are gorgeous! What a nice couple! He paints, she does the glass work! (I forgot their names as well.)
A lot of work goes into all of these things, yet the prices are reasonable. There are some things you can find anywhere, Daytona, Bahamas, etc. But the original Bonaire things are very special. I suggest anyone going, to stop by and check it out. There may be signs around. I think in City Cafe.
We had been in City Cafe and walked south on that road to a corner "plaza" area. Tables were set up and it was just very pleasant. I love the things we got. Wish we could've gotten more!

thanks PegiSue. Does anyone know if this market is every Friday? Sounds like a place I'd like to cruise

I think it is every Friday. I wish someone that knows about this would post some good info on here. The posters around town don't really tell much. No time or location. We were asking everyone for info, but it seems not many people there don't know about it at all...
It is a like a little flea market, I hope it grows and they have more things...Fun!

The market is currently held every Friday at Wilhelmina Plein (Wilhelmina Plaza) the small plaza "downtown" along the seaside across the parking lot from the governor's office, next to the Protestant church. The more support from BT'ers and other tourists will probably help it continue. Not sure of the exact hours...appears to be mid morning through the afternoon. I pass by there every Friday on my weekly shopping rounds and doesn't appear to be too busy before 10 or 11. Hope this info helps.

I know I'm late, but felt it might be beneficial.
We stopped in after seeing the Polynesia (4 masted schooner - Windjammer cruises, I believe) docked nearby. Then I recalled the market was open so we walked over. There were about half a dozen artisans/vendors and a place to get local food. We tried the chicken Sate sticks and they were great (think marinated kebab). Only About 1.75 guilder ($1) a piece.
This was in September, so not likely a lot of visitors stopping in and this may be the reason for the low number of "booths." Still, peaceful, reasonable, and everything was very different - nobody doing the same things as is true in so many other places.

There were key chains, fridge magnets, glassworks, hanging wooden decor signs, black market DVD/CDs, jewelry, plates & mugs and paintings.

In addition to being open on Friday does anyone know if the market at Wilhelmina Plaza is open on days that cruise ships are in port? They would seem to be ideal customers as many are looking for relatively inexpensive souvenirs.

The market currently happens every Friday from 9am to 2pm. During the cruise ship season, it will be there every time there is a cruise ship in (possible not for a few very small ones). It will also operate every afternnon / evening during the Regatta.
The reason the posters don't give exact times is that this is the first season and we were not sure what would be the best times.
If anybody has strong feelings about the times, please let us know.
Usually you can find many stalls with locally made items, including ceramics, jewellery, paintings, photos and cards, local food, glass, driftwood and more. - Look for the MADE ON BONAIRE logo on the stall.(I believe the DVDs aren't pirated by the way)

Moderator may blank out this bit because I am going to give a website where I will post any updated information about the markets, www.glassbonaire.com
