I am sure many of you have heard these thoughts and dreams before. After several trips to Bonaire and many more to other Caribbean and Central American destinations, my wife and I are considering purchasing a home on Bonaire. I have many questions, too many in fact to post on this web site so any and all comments, suggestions, etc. that can be offered would be greatly appreciated. I have heard horror stories on other islands about people losing their houses due to some snag or loop hole - is this an issue on Bonaire? Are there any problems for a non-resident staying for 3 months leaving and returning? On our last trip we stayed in Bonaire Exclusif and enjoyed the area very much. Any suggestions on other “nice” and reasonably safe neighborhoods would be helpful. Explain any difficulties of an English-only peaking American living on Bonaire. Comments on house vs. condo. What things should we look for and be aware of? Thanks for anything that can be offered.

there are really not too many condos...just be sure you get a list of costs to avoid surprises. No reak risks, however, other than choosing a neighborhood.

Thanks for all your comments. I have checked out Sunbelt Realty website and actually my wife stopped in their office briefly during our last visit. I am in the process of writing them and am putting all my thoughts and questions together. Michael, (& anyone else), if you can offer any neighborhoods it would be appreciated - we are not looking for anything upscale. How about Belnem, Republiek, Hato do you have any comments or suggestions??? Jake & Linda, you comments / suggestions also would be welcomed. Thanks again, Gregg

Indeed Jake your opinion is not based on sientific evidence. Our island is still in process of lifting up with an average speed of about 1mm per year during some periods of time in the past and possibly in the future. So Belnem will become a safe place in the future. However when the first non-Bonaireans built a house overhere the locals were convinced that one day the sea will take their houses.Which nearly happened during the waves of Lenny in 1999.

Reminds me of what the Seminole Indians (Florida) used to tell us when I was a little girl..that the water would come back up and reclaim the land....that the land would go back from whence it came.......and it will....someday.....Carole

Jake, you shouldn't have said that... I just looked across the street and Michael is attaching a mooring to his front porch!
