We have finally made a deposit on 44a Crown Courts after much imput from this board (thankyou)! Next questions, we will be traveling with three girls. Two are mine and one is ours. They all have passports. Will the girls that are not travling with their natural father need any additional letters authorizing me to travel out of the country with them. We had this come up in Mexico last year but they did not have passports. I would hate to get to the AA counter and be denied boarding. Any input?

Generally, a certified letter from the parents stating that you will have the temporaty guardienship of the minor children for x to y length of time. You ahould check with the US State Dept for any additional papers that may be needed. Getting onto the island should be a simple task however renentry to the US may be where they will ask for the documents. Also, it is a good idea to have such a letter in case of any problem that may occur while tavelling, especially in the US in the unlikely event a medical emergency occurs. (Please post what you find out for the State Dept so we can archive it)

The following is from the State Department website:

"Even if you are not required to have a passport to visit a foreign country, U.S. Immigration requires you to prove your U.S. citizenship and identity to reenter the United States. Make certain that you take with you adequate documentation to pass through U.S. Immigration upon your return. A U.S. passport is the best proof of U.S. citizenship. Other documents to prove U.S. citizenship include an expired U.S. passport, a certified copy of your U.S. birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization, a Certificate of Citizenship, or a Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States. To prove your identity, either a valid driver's license or a government identification card that includes a photo or a physical description is adequate.

With the number of international child custody cases on the rise, several countries have instituted passport requirements to help prevent child abductions. For example, Mexico has a law that requires a child traveling alone, or with only one parent, or in someone else's custody, to carry written, notarized consent from the absent parent or parents. No authorization is needed, if the child travels alone and is in possession of a U.S. passport. A child traveling alone with a birth certificate requires written, notarized authorization from both parents."

I agree with Michael, however, in that having such a written, notarized consent when the child is travelling with only one parent can avoid a whole lot of unforeseen problems. We always do it when Jessica is traveliing with just one of us.
