Hi,
We are going to Bonaire for the first time 22-31 march 2002. I have read that people took USD travellers checks and then converted them to guilders. Now we have the EURO in Europe, I am wondering what currancies are used on Bonaire? Is one currancy better than the other. There was a lot of talk about it was better to use guilders at some places. We are living in Denmark and the country doesn't use EUROs. So suggestions on what we should bring with us and what we should convert it and where we should convert it when we are on Bonaire would be really apprieciated.

Thanks
Abbi

Hi,

I feel a bit silly but I think I have just answered 1 of my own questions. When people talk about guilders on Bonaire they mean the NAF kind, not the kind they use to have in Holland! Think I need a holiday!

Abbi,

I found it easier to pay in guilders (the antillian version that is :)) than in dollars.

Most of the prices are in NAFL, so that's easier...

Have a lot of fun.

If you have an ATM card, with Cirrus, Star, or any of the major interlinks used in Europe, you can get NA guilders or US$. The banks will change dollars or US$ travelers checks to NA guilders with a minium amount charged for the conversion. If you get 60-100 US$ from a bank before you leave that should carry you until you can get to an ATM. Any major credit card will be acceptable at most shops, hotels, and dive shops. I have a mixure of NA and Nethersland guilders I have been given in change.

As a rule US banks do not have nafl on hand. Use dollars in most places you will receive 1.75 to the $ Banks will give you 1.77 for cash and 1.78 for checks. The rate is fixed so credit cards will be converted at the above rate. To put it into perspective, $20 will get you nafl 35 in food at the supermarket. It will get you nafl 35.40 at the bank.

Abigail,

As you live in Denmark and don't use Euros as your native currency, I'd suggest bringing dollars for all of the above reasons given by others.

Abigail

I am from the UK and again we do not use the Euro - we always take dollar travellers cheques to Bonaire. Hope that helps
