If you have an ATM card, with Cirrus, Star, or any of the major interlinks used in Europe, you can get NA guilders or US$. The banks will change dollars or US$ travelers checks to NA guilders with a minium amount charged for the conversion. If you get 60-100 US$ from a bank before you leave that should carry you until you can get to an ATM. Any major credit card will be acceptable at most shops, hotels, and dive shops. I have a mixure of NA and Nethersland guilders I have been given in change.

As a rule US banks do not have nafl on hand. Use dollars in most places you will receive 1.75 to the $ Banks will give you 1.77 for cash and 1.78 for checks. The rate is fixed so credit cards will be converted at the above rate. To put it into perspective, $20 will get you nafl 35 in food at the supermarket. It will get you nafl 35.40 at the bank.
