I was buying some salt for my water softener today at a store I don't usually shop and found where some of Bonaire's salt ends up.

This url is for the Cargill Home site http://www.cargillsalt.com/cargillsalt/default.asp . Interesting history and words on uses of Bonaire salt.

Interesting to me also because one of my uncles was the chief engineer for Diamond Crystal Salt in St. Clair, MI for many years. Beautiful town, many good memories.

Thanks Liz, I am in touch with Rich, he is fairly local to me. The changes sound good, may be back in Feb/March to check them out.

Abouth the twentieth post down on Google states that Cargill is the largest privately held company in the world. Of course , they are involved in many other things all over the world in addition to salt. I guess they,ve got a few people who know what they're doing.
Happy and Healthy Holidays and New Year to all MICKEY

Well, having grown up in MI (HQ of GM) and then lived in Minneapilos (HQ of Cargill) where the cars are eaten up at a pretty fast rate by generous applications of saltin the winter.....my guess is that Cargill and GM arrange to have it all shipped directly to the midwest :-)

Also, I am reading a very interesting book at present: Salt - A World History by Mark Kurlansky. It sheds some light on the strategic importance of the windward islands as a cheap source of salt......

A bit more of history.

My father in law's old college room mate from Penn State, was the facility manager for AKZO Nobel (Now Cargill)in Bonaire many years ago(They went to Penn State when Joe Paterno was a student there as well). I think he was in Bonaire in the 70s. He lived there for many years. Prior to our first trip to Bonaire in 92' he sent us a book on Bonaire which we still have today. Prior to that I had never heard of Bonaire.

I used to see AKZO Nobel salt around here (Sout/West Michigan) quite often. It was the type of salt that people use to melt ice on driveways and sidewalks.

Sure wonder what Bonaire looked like when he was there.
