I would really like to go to a wild party and perhaps get very very drunk on New Years Eve. Does anyone know where The Parties are happening?
Is 'wild' possible on Bonaire?

The hotels with restaurants, and some bars will probably do some typical American style new year's eve parties (buffets, bands, etc), but many other places will not; as a matter of fact, many restaurants & bars close early; some don't do dinner at all on Dec 31st--definitely check ahead for a reservation as soon as you get here.

New Year's is considered a family time, so we celebrate it differently here. Most families are together at home, or watching the fireworks at midnight. After midnight, like around 1-2am, the real parties start (usually at some of the "ranches" outside of town), and go on until daybreak. Just ask around (like your local dive master, or waiter, etc) when you get here. Cover charges for those parties range from $8-$30.

Christmas eve is pretty much the same way-families have dinner early, rest, dress up for midnight mass, then hit the parties that start around 2am...

Partying here is not for amateurs!

BTW, if you like fireworks, Bonaire is THE place to be on New Year's Eve! I have never in my life seen so many fireworks going off from so many places. It's the best fireworks display I've seen anywhere, anytime. Truly amazing!

Or Naples, Italy! Every street near the harbor was outlined all night in exploding fireworks.

Especially where one of our sailors was peeved at a push-cart fireworks vendor and flipped a lit cigarette into the cart.

And I stuck as O.D. aboard ship!!!

I would guess O.D. would be Officer of the Day, yes?

And Wally, no, I have never been to China. The coolest fireworks display I had ever seen before last New Years on Bonaire was the Rhine Aflame on the Rhine River in Germany in 1981 (coincidentally it was July 4th, but the Germans don't celebrate the US independence day, so I know it was just coincidence that they put on the most awesome 4th of July fireworks I had ever seen)...

Faith

We've gone a few times up to Jaffrey NH for an all-day Fireworks Event: the Atlas Fireworks people put on an annual show every year in August (the Jaffrey Festival of Fireworks). They do what they call a "Pyrotechnic Symphony", not only exploding in time to the music, but rising and falling in intensity according to it.

It's done on a big old airfield, and they put up a midway. People come from miles around, and they park you front to end so once you're there, you're there for the day. I think they get in the 10s or even 100s of thousands of people each year. We take the truck, and use the bed of it as a platform to watch the show. Some come in buses and RVs.

Once it gets dark, the display starts, and goes on for usually almost an hour. That's almost an hour of non-stop, choreographed fireworks.

They've been doing it for years, so even though there are a LOT of people leaving that parking lot around 10:30, they've got it pretty well organized with cops letting something like 20 per row out at a time. Still, if you get there at say, 5PM, you aren't out until after 1AM or so.

Despite that, the display is really worth it.

New Year's Eve in Bonaire rocks. It did in 1982 when we first came there (our honeymoon) and it did again in 2001 when we came back with our 18 year son.
