Jason, Barry, Kelly & not forgetting dear old Anonymous.

There are probably others I've missed besides these who've fallen onto their own swords, or simply wandered off into the twilight wilderness that I've been told exists beyond the pages of our comfortable womb-like BT world.
Well, I for one would love to see 'em all come back. Yep, I can't believe I'm saying this, but every last one of of them is sadly missed by me anyway.
Whether we agree with each others points of view or not, or indeed even despise one another, the pages are somehow diminished in their quality if even one of us with an opinion on the subject under discussion refrains from posting.
So, if enough of you share my sentiments, (& who knows, maybe you don't?) we've got to work out a way to lure them all back. Haven't we?

Good point.

"we've got to work out a way to lure them all back. Haven't we?"

Nah...

As a counter point in support of your point Andy (sounds contradictory, doesn't it?), I've received e-mails from people here on Bonaire who would have liked to post answers and comments on BonaireTalk but who felt that anything they posted would come under attack by certain Bonaire "experts" who no longer live on Bonaire but know everything, apparently (and no longer posts anything here, incidentally).

So while I agree in principle that "the pages are somehow diminished in their quality if even one of us with an opinion on the subject under discussion refrains from posting", how do you determine whose opinion is more valuable to us as a community? That of a frequent poster with lots of opinions (some or many of which may be factually wrong), or the opinions of several more moderate people, with possibly more factual validity to their opinion, whom the first person has scared (or annoyed) off?

Jake

Personally, I welcome ALL opinions. Especially from those people that live on the Island. There have been many "heated" debates on this board, and I believe it's healthy to share your feelings/thoughts with others. But certainly, there have been individuals, that have lacked a certain "decorum" in their posts. I hope I've not been one of them!!! S:)

In day to day life I personally run into lots of "experts" whether they are or not is what we all take with a grain of salt. Some people like to give advice (most of the time with the intent to really help) and some just like to rant....but thats what makes this world/page/community/countries so interesting...I know I have said a few thing out of context at times here...whether under the "influence of the dreaded "wogga wogga" or just under my own personal mental vomits...but......I must add I do miss the people who have left..Barry, Kelly, Jason, and Annon......come on back....we miss you :)

I hear all of you and it does remind me of the five blind men and the elephant. We are all experts in our own right and I think those of us that live here can appreciate all comments and learn from others who sometimes can be more objective. To the folks who have left for whatever reason and to those who used to live on Bnaire and still know a lot, your contributions have/will be appreciated. As for hurt feelings, thin skins, thick skins, etc., I imagine that there is no better armour than a good sense of homour.

Whilst I accept Jake, that you've got the right to pull the plug on any of us, (after all you've created this monster) I don't feel that morally anyone has the right to "determine whose opinion is more valuable to us" as you put it.
I feel that the pages will regulate themselves. Put simply...If "we" stray too far in our input from what is considered acceptable behavior by the majority then we will find ourselves ostracised (blacklisted, Dave), & the thread in which we've sinned will rapidly dry up.
Sure, there are always going to be some amongst us who feel intimidated by some contributors, but I maintain that none of us are stronger here than the words we tap out on the keyboard. If you disagree with someones point of view then I hope you have the strength of your convictions to post your argument. If not, scroll down the page & forget it.
Bullies won't survive here...the strong will invariably support the weak. As long as they're not talking jibberish of course!
OK...I'll go & get my coat then.

Incidentally, I received an interesting e-mail from Anony earlier.
He/She says that The Master of the Twilight Wilderness is willing to do a deal....He'll let 'em all go as long as he gets Dave in return.

It's nice to see that even with the wide range of topics discussed and the many many people participating in this site, and the many various opinions, that people are missed.
I realy enjoy this web site and it is the ONLY discussion group on the web I have ever had an interest in following.
Keep it up! :-) Denise

Andy,

I have yet to pull the plug on a regular contibutor. Only a couple of spammers have been blocked after repeated warnings not to blatantly advertise (including one just a few minutes ago), and one person who anonymously libeled another.

Keep in mind that not everyone is as thick skinned as you are, and many people don't care enough to belabor a point with someone they may perceive to be boorish, annoying, and overbearing.

A perfect example of this is some months ago when I identified a fish on a ReefCam image as a doctorfish, and a certain person jumped all over me saying it was a tang (which it obviously wasn't). Realizing that this person was either 1) ignorant about the differences between doctorfish and tangs as well as identification of other fish; and/or 2) yanking my chain to get a reaction or get into a written battle, I din't care to waste any more of my time on the subject, and since have kept a low profile on fish identifications because I didn't want to have to argue with someone who fell into category 1 and/or 2. And I'm not a particularly meek person.

It's one thing to argue with someone based on fact, but when the other party is arguing for the sake of arguing, it's, IMHO, a waste of time to continue on in that thread.

Jake

The problem is some people flame others just to be annoying - just to 'hear' themselves talk. They want to anger the other person who they don't even know.

I once made the fatal mistake of posting a well though out letter on rec.scuba. I was flamed and even received emailed personal threats. No facts, no consideration - just name calling, insults, and bodily threats. Out of several dozen emails, I received one note that responded to points in my letter in a constructive manner. I've never read or posted on rec.scuba again - not worth my effort.

That is why BonaireTalk is attractive to such a nice crowd of people because the idiots don't find a lynch mob ready and waiting to rip the next victim apart. You can say your two cents and although there may be disagreements, it usually does not regress to name calling. And the best part is that as a moderator, I have not had to police the discussions to insure this. It just happens.

Linda,

This is exactly why I love to be here. Here in Holland we have a few "discussion"-boards about diving. After one of them stopped receiving visitors with "normal" behavior, the big-mouths and brainless went to a newsgroup and started to annoy everybody there.

If someone asked something about a divesite, about 99% of the answers would be something like "You big f... why don't you do a search instead of reasking. can't you think you &$^&%@#^@#^#$@^#$^#$^@#$^%%$^*&^%#$@#@$%^&^%$#&" (as this is a public board with young viewers, I translatted only the decent parts).

I don't know why, but this board is verry different, the people leave each other in their own value.

This is in my humble opinion a result of 2 things.
1: the warm and open feeling (most) of the BT-ers show towards each ather and to newbies, and
2: the atmosphere Bonaire has (also verry warm, in more than one way) and the kindness of the island.

Thanks to you and jake, we can enjoy all of this from our houses far away.

Thank you for sharing the beauty of Bonaire with all of us!!

Martin

An interesting thread. First of all since we are all suffering PBD, things are bound to get "sensitive" from time to time. At least until we synchronize our meds. (or wogga-wogga?)

I have participated in a few such boards and have learned that it is like no other form of communications!! Without visual or audible clues all sorts of misunderstandings inevitably occur. I finally got to the point of just letting things flow unless someone actually promised to fly to my place and do me physical harm.

This is too nice a "place" to walk away from.

SNIFOTC Guess Martin!!

What the @%#$ is going on???

I've been busy and have not been reading every post over the last few weeks. I came back in this evening and found what looks like the equivalent of an ax-throwing contest going on.

Have we not been playing nice fellow BT'ers?

Wouldn't it be fun to maintain a place where egos are not the biggest part of the conversation?
If we all had the same ideas and same knowledge about Bonaire, scuba, snorkeling and fish...then we wouldn't need to log on to this site....

Friends are hard to come by.
A sense of humor is tricky to revive once dead.
Wogga-wogga in moderation can improve the disposition...in excess it can make one a real bore...(boar)

Sorry if I haven't used the proper acronyms... maybe we should all try these conversations in Dutch.

IMHO (har, har, har_

Jan,

"...looks like the equivalent of an ax-throwing contest going on."

Ah, heck. Just hand axes! Bet ya everybody would be nicey, nicey if we were all in Bonaire and not cracking frozen joints in cold, damp, dark places. O.K. it is SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) season up here in the north. Even wogga-wogga is unhelpful. Slowly goes away about May, depending on the retreat of winter.

See what happens when you don't pay attention! You have to go nuts at the same pace as the crowd or it all gets very confusing. :-)

Cheers,

Bill

here's my 2 cents worth:
i look at all chat boards the way i look at group therapy. People stay for as long as they feel they are getting something worthwhile from the experience. You don't have to like everyone in the group, but you do need to be courteous to all.
Attrition is to be expected and it is healthy unless everyone leaves at the same time.. If people miss a group member, they are always free to contact him/her privately.
My first post on this board offended some members, although it was never my intention to do so. The angry members gave me Hell. I stood my ground. I'm still here and they are too. We may never agree on that particular subject, but who cares? we each had our say and then it was over and done. We were all ready to move on to other subjects.
The system of self inclusion/exclusion really does work.

If everyone had the same ideas, what a boring place this would would be. Wish I could post more but my connection won't let me.
What I like to enjoy in Bonaire isn't what lots of people like. But it is fun to hear what is important to the rest of you. And what is even better is how 'we' all feel we have a stake in Bonaire.
Re: Jack's post
I run a website for NJ Council of Diving Clubs - I also send out many e-mails about diver interest items. I get 'flamed' regularly. It isn't fun getting nasty e-mails every day when all you are trying to do is pass on information. Disagreements are one thing - both sides have facts and present them to the other side... Flamming is just usually not nice and often makes me wonder why I bother with this 'service' somedays.

Firstly, apologies for for my absence.
Gale force winds brought down my phone lines yesterday afternoon. The BT (British Telecom) engineers effected a temporary repair that evening but came back this morning & the line's been down for the last 6 hours while they made a better job of things.
After reading Deans post I thought I'd better look back to refresh my memory too. It was a big surprise! Because you didn't mention the "certain person" by name Jake,I assumed that you meant it was me. Hence my questioning your judgement of character yesterday. I was pleased to see that I even apologised for my own rather arrogant input later in the thread...I'm just too polite sometimes, don't you think?
Reading the thread I felt rather nostalgic...both Jason & Kelly made contributions. I couldn't stop myself clicking on Jason to see his profile pic, (which was always one of my favourites) but of course it's no longer there, alas.

So...back to the thread. What have we got to show after 30+ postings? We've all huffed & puffed & shot off in different directions apart from Dave who went straight for the jugular & said "Nah" to my first query.
Jake, whilst not mentioning anyone by name (you know you make a bit of a habit of that? It must come from all the legal stuff you do, I guess?) seems to be implying that he wouldn't welcome Barry back. But who knows...I've already guessed wrongly once earlier in the thread, so maybe this'll be the second time?
Several of you seem to feel like me that the pages can accommodate everyone, with Mimi for example appearing to feel quite proud of herself for "hanging in there" when the going got tough. More power to her elbow! I say. As I said yesterday...I'd like to think that the more mild mannered (for want of a better description) amongst us will be supported by the rest in times of need.
Other contributors have expressed their reservations to post an opinion for the fear of an aggresive response.

The combined results seem rather inconclusive, so I think that we should let Meryl decide.

Yes Meryl, fear not...I posted it yesterday :-)

Re: Barry. If he wants to come back, he's more than welcome to. Am I losing sleep that he hasn't returned? No. (Keep in mind too that I know Barry personally - he used to live across the street from me here on Bonaire - and his activities prior to his reemerging here on BonaireTalk last year (and even subsequent none on-line actions) flavor my opinion of him quite a bit.)

I'm a quite a bit more saddened by the absence of the brothers Hirsh (Jason & Kelly), as I found them to have good commentary and posts. I've exchanged e-mails with them since their departure, and they are doing fine, however.

But yes, Andy, the results are inconclusive - most people have their own opinions and there is no consensus, which, considering the breadth of personalities our BonaireTalk community involves, is not particularly surprising :-)

Jake, It is hard to get along with all our neighbors...plus you see most other peoples neighbors each day on their arrival to your front door! I am sure that some of the visitor's neighbors are glad that they have gone on vacation. Yet we are very glad to see them when they show up...no one has told us in advance that they are unpleasant at times..and we have molded our own opinion from what we have seen and heard from them... If I were Barry (and I'm not) I probably wouldn't come back. I do like the first line of your above message...the part that says, Barry, If he wants to come back he is more than welcome to. But I would have left it at that. See the diversity of people we have here?! Jake again....great venting with you all...we can't please all of the people all of the time!

five blind men all are in the presence of an elephant. The first is at the trunk and pronounces elphants are like fire hoses..the second is at a leg and proununces them to be like huge trees, yet another has the tail and states they are like ropes, and so on...this is a fable (turgenev..russian I seem to recall from my Tsarist days) and shows that most of us really don't have the complete picture of the true reality of things (Jake and me as well) However, I did spend a lot of time in various situations with Barry and must say that I heard "I'm out of here" on more than one occassion and his legacy on Bonaire has not left a good impression of the ex pat (sorry jake, but I like the word ex pat) American Community...not to mention the institution of marriage. A bit close to the bone don't you think? As an "ousider" I can't possibly fathom the "history" that would lead you to want to post that to a "public" board. My gut reaction is that it is in the TMI (too much information) category.

If that was meant to be a "humourous" remark lots of smileys definately required!

If this is a race I hope we get to the finish soon. Or maybe we shouldn't have left the gate in the first place.

I enjoyed Michael's fable...I have never heard it before! and find it can be related to alot of first impressions of people. I was referring to the second part of the thread. I don't watch Jerry...I live in New Jersey the guests on his show are my patients, people I meet in the supermarket, and in some cases (more than I would like to admit ) acquantances (did I spell that right?) of my daughters! and of course family members from hell. I keep to the Discovery/Animal Planet/Weather Channel/and movies with happy endings....Wish they would make a Discovery channel for wimps who cover their faces when preditor animals are the focus of the show...If I want to see depression and violence I'll work overtime at work....

Thanks for the explanation of the fable Michael. I'm pleased that you stopped short of telling us what the guy who was holding its genitals reckoned!
So, now I understand the fable...who's Jerry Springer?

Well Dave, I know I was quick to challenge you over your numero uno diver claim, but I reckon the title for this one's just about within your grasp. Although I gotta warn you...several of us would be Tysons are going to try & bite your leg along the way.
Can't for the life of me think why I came on here this morning.........Ah, I remember!

To All

When I left the board.. I left.. Then I was surprised and met one of those "Bonaire Talk people".. besides the fact that he could never figure out a car alarm and seemed to have an endless supply of scotch which he played my neighbor with .. he seemed like a good guy .. for a brit... Andy it was good to meet you and your group and I look forward to many years of friendship BUT PROMISE NEVER NEVER RENT ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH A CAR ALARM

Anyway .. so lo and behold.. I get an email from Andy... encouraging me to reconsider my departure... so I go back and look at the board.. gee same BS different day.. we are still bashing at least one guy for personal reasons.. Hey I didn't agree with him either.... but do we HAVE TO BE PERSONAL.. Jake. Michael, How long has Barry been gone??

Barry, and others.. I do miss the diving discussions, after all I am a trainer, I miss sharing my love for Bonaire..I don't miss the bashing.. even this string, talking about those of us who wandered away got back to the bashing..

Andy you ALMOST suckered me in ... naaaahhh...

Hey everyone HI.. safe diving..I do miss contributing.. but I don't watch Jerry Springer so I am not sure I can bring much to this BBS anymore.

thanks

I violated one of the tenets of Bonairean society. That is "we do not air our dirty laundry, etc" It was really an error on my part and I do apologize to Barry's memory and only wish him and his new family well in his new life.

Jake- Based on the above, I guess I do watch Jerry Springer. Excuse me while I get a 64oz coke, popcorn and a snickers bar.

andy, "Who's Jerry Springer?" that explains everything!

He is a "trash show host"...usual guests are "cousins who cheated with their mothers sisters brother while their father was passed out on the couch..."...gee...hope I didn't offend anyone....

Yeah, and Andy, here's what Jake was really referring to: the Jerry Springer Show isn't in full swing until vicious fights are being picked on stage and from the audience, whatever the "topic."

Mum's going to be livid Sarah!
When she agreed to "run up" 10,000 pairs of the above offending articles, it was on the strict understanding that they wouldn't become available to the public until June 1st.
Oh Cynde....What are we going to do with you?
I can't put smiley faces after all my attempts at humo(u)r or Dave will start giving me a hard time about being too nice again.
Sadly, we probably get as much Jerry Bl**dy Springer over here as you folks do.

Sarah: I'd just LOVE a pair of those pants.

I grew up in London, and have very fond memories of the Queen's coronation (doesn't that date me!!!). Actually, I was in vitro at the time (I hate myself when I lie like that). Must have been about six, and all the flats were decorated and we had street parties and parades --- great stuff. There's not a lot I remember from that time, but I'll never forget that.

So, don't I deserve the pants?

Sarah
Give the old girl a kiss from me and tell her Mum I'll try and smuggle another bottle of Jenever pass the palace guards in October when I'm back.

What the devil's going on here?!
I turn my back for a few minutes & come back to find that you've turn my thread into a Womens Institute jamboree!
It's just one small step further & you'll have us all debating how we should pronounce scones....& there hadn't better be even one amongst you who reckons it should sound like "scoanes".
Where's the Moderator, that's what I want to know?
I post a charming picture of a pleasantly rounded lady in a swimming pool, performing a perfectly natural bodily function, & it's wrenched from view in no time. Yet this appears to be acceptable?
Come on man...how can you let such appalling misuse of an excellent thread continue?

And Steve...you're in the middle of it all!!
Isn't there the rather more weighty matter of an over exposed member of staff that you should be dealing with?

Oh Andy, now you've distracted him, it's hard enough getting Stevie to answer my questions as it is!!!!

OK, I'm off.. be back later..S:)

Andy,
Non of my staff were overexposed.....I only read the last few posts here it would take me a week to read it all,but I'm with you all the way...as soon as I've worked out what it is we are advocating.....Sarah...Dive Birmingham, though it might be November, I only know it's cold when I'm in U.K.

OK, I've got over the shock of being answered, now I will say this, "the Dive Shows are a lot of fun, and very informative".. we went to the ExCel Show in London last year, will most likely go to the next one this March!

Andy, if you're interested, go to:
http://www.diveshows.co.uk/

oh, and Stevie, the site has October down for your Birmingham show..

So...it was one of the girls after all then Steve?

I shared a PADI Course Directors handshake (resembles the Volcan mind grip, to the uninitiated) with Steve at the Birmingam Dive show last October.
Sadly, this next show will be the first I've missed in 5 years (either London or Birmingham) It's tempting, but I just can't bring myself to cancel my Bali trip which clashes with the London show in March.
