Our Morris County (NJ) newspaper (The Daily Record) had a wonderful article raving about Bonaire, her people, her diving, snorkeling, critters, etc. on Sunday 1-20-02 in the Travel Section. Lots of coverage on Captain Don, himself, as well as the fact that Bonaire has been a world leader in the field of ecology since before the term was coined.

It is a great article, but it makes me "nervous" as I DO want to see Bonaire receive the praise and exposure she deserves, but there is still a selfish part of me that wants to keep her "our little secret" so that she does not become overpopulated and overrun with "tourists" and the like! I'll bet I am not the only one out there with "mixed" feelings such as this, however!

I tried to pull up the article on line and enclose a link, but I cannot locate it after numerous attempts at work and at home. I do wish everyone could read it....it is nicely done and just wonderful.

There are tons of people residing in the Morris County (Metro Northern NJ)area and lots and lots of them have the money and the time to explore and go off on new adventures. I am hoping that only the "hard core" divers and snorkelers will take the article seriously and travel to Bonaire.

Every bit of Bonaire was referenced in this article. It appears to have been written and photographed by a Daily Record correspondent, Deborah Williams, who has experienced every spot we know and love....Lac Bay, Donkey Sanctuary, Salt Flats, Gotomeer, Karpata and so on....the article covered every bit of it. She started visiting Bonaire in 1980 and has made seven trips since then, so I guess one could say she knows the island very well. It is a "loving" article. Wish I could share it with all of you.

Does anyone from the island know Deborah Williams?? Ayo. Carole

Ah, every bit of Bonaire? Did she mention the Cams or BonaireTalk? If not, what a travesty! :-)

There are about 20 Sunday papers (January 20, 2002) still available (19 available in a few moments). Cost is $1.00 if you pick it up at the paper or $6.00 and they will mail it to you. The address if you want to get one is:

Back Issues
800 Jefferson Road
Parsippany, New Jersey
07054

Check or money order. The person in archives said this would not be archived since it was not a local reporter, so it will not be available on line.

Dean or Carole, what about scanning it and then sending it to Jake and Linda, or those who would be interested in reading it (like me)...yes I am too cheap to spend the $7.00 :)

Carol or Dean, as I'm not able to buy that paper (the nearest shop where they sell it is across the Atlantic Ocean) I would be gratefull if one of you could send me the article...

Thanx,

Martin

I have a copy of the article, It was in our Asbury Park Press here in Central south Jersey. I could scan it in and download for everyone to read if Jake wants to set up a separate area as I am sure it would be large, but I don't know how to put it on...can anyone advise?

Liz

Liz, scan it in Black and White at maybe 100 dpi and then reduce to it's just legiable, save as a .JPG. It should not end up that big, maybe you could even post it here if it's under 50k.

Here is the URL for the story on Bonaire. The Web site's navigation is a little tricky. Click on the "pull down menu" that says "swift navigation jump" (on the right of the Web page near the top). Choose Page 1, then click on the picture of the boats/sunset to enlarge the story. If you click above it...you may just enlarge and advertisement. To go to the end of the story, close this window by clicking the "close this window" button, then in the "swift navigation jump" menu, choose page 4!

Sorry Jake...no mention of the newsgroup or cam, but lots of press for Captain Dons!!

Scott and Sharon, thanks for the link. However, if she has been going to Bonaire for 20 years, how could she possibly have left out the cams! Jake, I think you should email the gal and set her straight!

I just got my copy of Scuba Diver and Bonaire was one of the top destinations in many categories of a reader survey. And they had an article about the top shore dives on Bonaire. No mention of Jake and Linda's cams tho. It did say to fly ALM tho. HUH?

Sorry I could not scan for anyone....my scanner is not working ever since we bought our "new" monster computer set up! LOL. I am glad Scott was able to locate the article on line and post the link. No, sorry there was no mention of the Web Cams....she is missing a big part of the Bonaire Experience! Carole

At least she was more accurate about Bonaire than a guy who wrote a recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He talked about seeing a lot of Clown Fish while diving Bonaire! Wrong ocean...maybe he dove a little too deep too long?
