Did I miss something? Barbara L. was told by the Donkey lady that she has to round up all the donkeys my Sept. and they will all live at the Sanctuary?? Is this true?

Maggie and her US friend went to volunteer but were turned away as there were too many? It makes sense I think to make an appointment. Just a pleasant FYI.

So, what's the truth, please?

When we were on the island in May we heard the same thing as well from someone at the Donkey Sanctuary and from someone else (can't remember who). We were told there happen 2 much accidents with donkey's and the fighting between donkey's was a problem as well. So I guess it's true.

I received a newsletter a couple months ago from Marina, and she has been working on fencing in around 130 acres around the sanctuary to make a Donkey Safari Park. At that time it was pretty close to being completed by what I understood, and once it was, she had permission from the Government to round up all the donkey's and take them to the Donkey Safari Park where they will be cared for and safe. I'm going to send her an email today to see if she can post an update.

Okay, a little check in for me....as I told Annie P. per Marina (who can correct me if I misunderstood), the government had threatened to have all the loose donkeys shot....she then made a commitment to round them all up by the end of September. So, the current plan is to round them up with the assistance of some friends. She is in great need of additional dollars to complete this task as well as to continue to feed the ever growing herd.

The donkey sanctuary is looking marvelous. Alison spent a day there helping to feed, clean, groon and take children on donkey rides.

I was wondering if the BT funds have been spent as if not, I would vote to support this project.

Finally, Ann, she would like additional help but wants to know how many to expect in advance..I told her the morning I dropped off Alison that I thought the girls would be there...it turned out she already had 2 Dutch students too....she would love the help but would like to know in advance so that she can arrange to spread the help out...too many kids on one day are hard to superivise!

I will e-mail more info to you too, Cynde!

Thanks Barbara! The funds have not been distributed as of yet. The concensus is to have it go to SupportBonaire.org projects, but divvying it up between them based on the responses folks posted.

Amazing, the government will pay to have people go and shoot the wild donkeys, and I assume "dispose" of them, but they won't lift a hand to arrest criminals that are robbing residents and tourists....

I have a question:

How many donkeys do they need to round up? Can this amount co exist in 130 acres after freely roaming the island? It seems like a huge task for humans to accomplish, a HUGE task for one woman to oversee and a very stressful experience for the donkeys. Granted it is far better than shooting.

Lastly, will they be sterilizing all the animals or some once captive?

Thanks for the answers..

Hello BT donkeyfriends , I wil give you an update how and wat is going to happen the coming months and why we need as soon as possible more adoption parents for the donkeys.

The donkey commity , who was organised by the governement , more than a year ago , aggreed upon at the end from the several meetings who where held at D.R.O.B. office with members of the Bonairean community such as , Police , SSS Island segurity , LVV , Animalshelter , Stinapa , Police Ambiental, Natur env.officer of the governement, Donkey help , Aliansa ,Animalkliniek Bonaire, after several meetings with these members , we all decide that the donkeys are in the best hands of us , with our knowlegde and my hart and my ideas abouth how we go furder on Bonaire with the donkeys in a controllet situation ! So this report we brought to the governement and they aggreed immidiate and were happy with the results , they have no land who is good enough for the donkeys to rent or give it to our foundation so finaly we ended up at the owner who owns the land behind the Sanctuary until the road to sorobon , that is great land but rent it was not possible , so from our last money and with the help of sponsers fron the USA and Holland , we bought the acres who Cynde mentioned in her BT, that is realy great , we need to buy 16 HA more before end this year so we have the best deal of the world for the donkeys ,if you need more info , just email me at donkeyshelp@telbonet.an , and the greatest thing of that commity was, that because of our pressure , the gouvernement paid the fence material and give 4 man to help my partner Ed with fencing the whole area , wich is ready now, also the feeding place and the drinking place is ready and the last hands doing the foodstorage place now! This was a very big job , drilling each poal and concreet it and than fencing !Now the cattleguard must be in the ground between the two parts of land , some trees must be covert and the last hands on the picknik places than we start to catch the so called problem donkeys who are near the roads and causes car accidants , this week 3 donkeys lost there lives , one at Sabana , one at Kaminda Lagun ( both last monday morning ) and today , saturday morning at Hato in front of Habitat , this is
realy enough.

So now I am urgent in need for adoption parents because right now in our Sanctuary we have 116 donkeys and we have to catch about 100 more !!
And please for ones and for all , problem donkeys we aggreed upon with the governement to bring them inn , NOT donkeys who are far in the wild ! If these donkeys become a so called problem donkey , and held up near the roads again , than we have to catch them to , please do not feed wild donkeys , let them stay wild so you can see them in the wild and you can take pictures from them in the wild !
Please don't hasetate to email me with guestions , I open my email almost everyday , and I have no time to go on the BT , but this is special to inform you by myself, I thank god that we saved the donkeys from Bonaire , that we keep them forever on Bonaire ( a donkey can be 40 , if we need fresch blood , we wil insemenate a vieuw healthy mares in the future , but that will take atleast 20 years before it is so far )
I hope you all are happy and willing to help me with adopting a donkey !
Thank you very much ,
marina and 116 donkeys , and sorry if I spell things wrong.

Marina, thanks for the update, we all appreciate it. You can donate directly to the sanctuary (and other supportbonaire.org needy non-profits) by going to www.Supportbonaire.org and on the left navigation bar, click on "Make a Donation" and go from there. If you donate through supportbonaire.org, it is also a tax write off for US folks:-)

Thank you, Marina, and Cynde, too for updating us and letting folks know how to help out. We adopted Barbara last June and she was pregnant at the time....I will ask Marina if Joe and I can offer to adopt her little baby now, too. Help all you can folks...Marina works her heart out to save and help the donkeys of Bonaire. Carole

Here is a picture of Joe taken this June holding one of the baby donkeys. Joe said she was light as a feather and didn't feel as heavy as our kitty, Fuzzy! LOL. CaroleJoe
