I am heading to Bonaire - January 23rd - I am excited but nervous. First flight since 9/11, and first time to Bonaire. Staying at Buddy's. I have read warnings about bugs and rain and thefts but they all end saying how they LOVE Bonaire and can't wait to come back... Plan to do mostly shore dives have truck rented. Any tips??? Thanks -

Janet:

Read the posts for tips, but here a few of my own.

Shore diving is great. You will love it. Some of my favorites are Ol Blue (Named a dog after that one, Angle City, Alice in Wounderland, Slave Huts, The bay just north of the slave huts, I can't remember the name, and any dive from just north of the Hilma to south of salt pier.

Tour the park, even if you do not dive it. It is hot, so bring water and beer. We usually do a couple of dives and then drink beer or tasty wasties on the way outof the park. it is an all day event, and it is hot, dusty, and bumpy. Stop at the bird observation post and stay quiet for 5-10 minutes and the big lizards will come out looking for snacks. Also at the old light house on the hill, a ton of smaller lizards play. The hillside seems to come alive.

Walk around the town and visit Rincon. Both very safe and interesting.

Check out the salt works, and go to Jib City. Check out Lac Bay on Sunday afernoons for the locals party.

Oh yea, tell Amstell to step up production, we will be there in 7 weeks

Dave

I just got back. I didn't notice the bugs, but that might be because of the Polar/Amstell insulation that I had in the evenings. Really, with some bug spray, they will not be that bad.

I made several night dives in remote areas and did not have any petty theft. I even left my regular guilder or two in the ashtray for the "parking fee" and it was not collected this time. Last year, they got the radio and always took the "parking fee".

Just relax, enjoy, and dive safe.

Janet,

We just returned Monday. As for those mosquitos, YES! I was bitten big time first night. After that I used spray every afternoon and evening. They left me alone, but then proceeded to bite everyone else in our group. I offered them the spray, but they were just too tough. Not tough enough for the skeeters though. My bites are just now clearing up. Be prepared!
