Did you find it? :-)

By Josie on Monday, January 14, 2002 - 3:40 pm: |
We're connecting in Chicago. Will try to get bagels there. And what is schmear???
|
By Jake Richter - NetTech on Monday, January 14, 2002 - 4:23 pm: |
Schmear is flavored cream cheese, generally store made (at least at bagel shops, although Kraft Philadelphia brand has descent ones). Chive cream cheese, lox cream cheese, etc. are all schmears. It's a Yiddish word, I believe.

OK, Jake, if I can find bagels and schmear in Chi, any flavor requests?

Bagels keep well, especially if from a real bagel makers, so try at home first! Bagel flavors - prefer egg, pumpernickel, cranberry nut, sesame, or raisin. Schmear - anything as long as it has no mushrooms or gourds/squash (unlikely, but who knows these days).

What is schmear? A generous smear, or a healthy dollop. usually on a bagel, but not exclusively so. A schmear can be anything that you smear on the object. Jam, butter, etc. For example, your baked potato could have a schmear of butter, bacon & chives. Get it?

Good point, Mimi. I had only focused on the type of schmear I liked to have on my bagels :-)

So--it is not the same thing as my 'getting schmeared' last night??? Or, come to think of it, that is probably not a family channel subject!! :–)))

josie - i'll bring a dozen egg bagels for Jake, along with the dozen I am bringing for Michael. so don't run around O'Hare looking for them. Look for deep dish pizza instead. Chicago deep dish pizza is the best! My care package arrives on the 8th. No schmears because they will spoil en route. Also, they are very easy to make in your own kitchen.
