This is probably most interesting for the Dutch readers. I was watching a tv show this Friday, and they talked about a series broadcasted on Dutch TV in 1979. I remembered watching this as a kid, it was a very exciting series, about a singer who got in trouble, on an island, also while diving. In this show Friday, they showed a little fragment of the series, and I remembered it. But, you probably guessed it by now, it was filmed in the Caribean, and they talked about "diving Karpata"!
Hey, I didn't remember THAT! It was all filmed on Bonaire. I looked on the internet, and found out that the whole series was available on DVD! I found it in a store, and now have watched 2 episodes, it is great! So much is shown and told about Bonaire, we recognise a lot! So for the die hard Bonaire fans: Duel in de diepte, available on DVD. Free Record Shop sells it.

Thank you for posting this. I had heard there was a movie filmed here around that time, but that the name was something like "Wilson's Wall" (Wilson something...). I wonder if this could be the same thing? We'll try to get a copy to show at Mango's, where we have a DVD player at the bar.

Ruth, the name Wilson does not occur in the series, so doubt if it'sthe same. Are you sure the "wilson" film is Dutch? If I can help you get a copy of this series,....

Ruth,

I just searched the Internet Movie Data Base (http://imdb.com/) for the title 'Wilson's Wall' with no matches. You might want to try it to find the movie you are looking for. Good luck.

Ruth, while surfing, I came across a Bonairean actor, who also played in Duel in de diepte, he is called William Anthony: http://www.william-anthony.com/

I believe the film that Ruth was referencing is "Wilson's Reward," an embarrassingly bad low budget U.S. film with Sandy Dennis and ?, filmed partly in Bonaire (nothing underwater). Pre-dating that there was "Sharks Treasure," another doozie, with Cornell Wilde.

Yep Nat, that sounds like it. We could find those movies & do 'bad movie night' after a lot of Amstels are consumed...which might make them easier to view. ;-)

I already have my girlfriend in Amsterdam getting us a copy of Duel. We always have enough people with all the languages around, so we'll just translate as we go.

Thanks everyone!
Ruth

Hi William, nice to meet you!
You where the one who gave the "double 4" to Peter Faber, and who warned the "good guys" later? The one who's motorcycle was thrown in the water? Yes, you are in the DVD too!
In the original series there are 13 episodes, on the DVD they made 6 from it, I don't think they cut a lot in the original movies. We have seen 4 episodes now, you are in episode 4.
Ayo!

Thanks Karin to let me know in which episode I appear. Yes indeed. I gave the "double 4" to Peter Faber, who warned the "good guys" later and the one who's motorcycle was thrown in the water. It was a very nice expercience because this kind of things nearly never happened ont thy island and it was an honor to be selected to play that part.

I can surely imagine that! You where pretty young there! I loved the series when I was a kid, and I must say, I am enjoying it now again, although for slightly other reasons! I just love Bonaire, and it's great to see that so much of the island was filmed, and also that some facts are being told. It could be a documentary! It also improves my papiamento!

According to the IMDb data base - Bonaire was the filming location in 3 films/series:
"Duel in de diepte" (1979) TV Series (dutch)
Odyssée d'amour (1987) (dutch)
and
Sharks' Treasure (1975) (english)

There is no further information about Odyssee, but one reviewer said Sharks' had some great underwater photography.

Amazing what you find on the internet<g>.

Shark Treasure.

This sub-B movie was filmed in 1974-75. Much of the filming was done in Slagbaai before it was part of the Washington Park system. It was accessible only if the farmer gave you a key. The roads were for goats. But the snorkeling was awesome.

That year when we went out to Slagbaai to snorkel we discovered old anchor chains, anchor, cannons, etc. We thought we found the Atacha II. Much to our surprise these turned out to be the u/w movie props.

Later we found these large wire cages in water. They were used to "store" the sharks until they were needed in the filming. Only later did they find out Bonaire's onshore shark population is so rare. They had to go to Venezuela to shoot the shark shots by Lake Maracaibo. So much for Shark Treasure. We saw the movie stateside years later. It is worth seeing older Bonaire.

To all of you,

I'm doing a exerimental recording of some traditional Antillean songs and made a adaptation of Remailo, the Bonairean harvest song. However, a radio programmaker told me that this new CD is not so represenative as the otherone before, Music from Bonaire. So I am a little confused now and I am asking myself if it has any sense to keep working on these tracks. If you have the chance listen to them (Remailo, Rein and Amor di nos dos) and let me know what do you think about this.

William, although I don't know your first CD yet(which I will probably purchase,....) I did like the new songs. I listened to them yesterday, and it reminded me of the grandfather of a friend of ours, who is from Bonaire. He is almost 80 years old now, and a few weeks ago, he was in Holland, and on his granddaughters birthday he played all kind of old songs for us. So to me it sounds very representative!

Karin, The tracks on the Cd Music from Bonaire are: Bonaire, Snijderslied, Schoon is the West and Porque Sólo Soñé. Some stores on Bonaire (TCB) had it for sale.

Karin,

That's a great reference, thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention. Although it may be in Dutch, if there is a lot of scenery of Bonaire shown, it would be fun for those of us who can't speak Dutch to see as well. Something to look for the next time we're in the Netherlands.

James, how are you?
Let me know when you come to The Netherlands the next time! We really enjoyed watching the DVD, we did recognise lots of places, although there was far less buildings there 25 years ago! It seemed that most was filmed in Rincon.

No firm plans at the moment, Karin, but we can't seem to stay away for long. We'll let you know next time we're over, and we can have lunch again in Rotterdam. I hope your summer is going well, we're having a lot of cool and wet weather here in Ontario (actually, all of Canada). We are REALLY looking forward to being back in Bonaire in August!
