Anyone know if Voodoo is practiced on Bonaire? (If so, it would not bother me at all. I just thought it might make an interesting thread, what with Bonaire being in the general vicinity of Haiti and all...) (at least "nearby" as far as we mainlanders are concerned)

Joe

I don't think so, although you might find some headless chickens at KFC.

I could swear that someone mistakenly made a Voodoo Doll that looked a little bit too much like me when I lived there.....they must have gotten a thrill by pounding it on the pavement, throwing it and it's bicycle around, breaking it's thumbs, feeding it to the eels and letting it lounge in a spider-web hammock.

Nothing else could possibly explain some of my Bonaire Adventures :-)

On Bonaire voo doo is called bruheria and widely practiced among our older population. It also covers good and evil spells.

FYI - This is from the internet, for those interested.

Bruheria
This is a blend of Roman Catholicism and the Aztec Goddess faith and has been influenced by other traditions such as spirituism, Santeria, Voudun, Wicca and ceremonial magick. It is common throughout Mexico and the United States among the chicano populations. Practitioners are called bruhas if female and bruhos if male. Bruheria is centered around the worship of Our Lady of Guadalupe, an aspect of the Virgin Mary who first appeared to an Indian convert in 1531. This may be a new incarnation of Tonantzin, a powerful, beloved Aztec Mother-Goddess religion. This faith is very Goddess-oriented and Moon-oriented though Jesus and a variety of saints are also important to it. Magickal techniques include the use of herbs, Tarot, candles in many shapes and colors, astrology, prayer and incantations. Medallions depicting saints or Guadalupe in her various aspects are also worn.

Thanks, Michael!
