I've noticed that a lot of people are posting that they bring lots of AA and AAA batteries with them from the mainland. Are these not available on Bonaire?

Most likely cost a lot more on Bonaire. We also ask that folks take back with them any old/dead batteries, too, as they do not have a recycling system on Bonaire. Just drop the old ones back into your luggage for the ride home. Everyone will truly appreciate it.

I would imagine it is the cost factor for the reason to bring plenty of your own with you, Joe.

Always be prepared! Have a great time! CArole

Joe

Even better bring rechargeable batteries. I get through at least 20 AA batteries a day (Strobes and night lights) and have a very tight charging schedule.

Regarding rechargeable batteries: is it necessary to bring a voltage converter? If so, should we bring European or Caribbean plug adapter (round or straight prongs)?

Thanks,
Alan

The battery chargers I use output 12VDC and normally run on 110vac 60 Hz. I typically try to plug these in to the same transformer that runs the refrigerator (which reduces the voltage from about 130v down to 110 or so). If you don't be prepared to have these wall transformer units burn up. The other option is to buy some "bonaire chargers" that are specifically designed to work with Bonaire's (and a few other island's) rather strange selection of voltage and frequency. I think they cost about $12USD and can be purchased in the electronics shop located close to Cultimara.

I have an international charger which works from 100-240V and 50/60 Hertz and even Bonaire. Most of the larger resorts have a photoshop which probably will have a stabilised US power supply available.

I just bought 3 chargers that'll do 4 AA/AAA at a time. The chargers run the same currents as in Brian's post above. If you search the net for battery chargers, you should be able to find them.

To all that visit Bonaire - if you take your batteries with you or buy them in Bonaire, PLEASE TAKE ALL BATTERIES BACK HOME WITH YOU TO THE U.S.

Just a friendly reminder from a BON friendly.

Perhaps Bonaire should start leaving a bin of people's discarded batteries in front of the airport with a sign requesting that people leaving fill all the voids in their luggage with them.
