We visited Bonaire for the first time four years ago and are now anxiously looking forward to our second visit in April 2002. I have really been enjoying this board since last spring and eagerly check the hints and conversations daily. We want to return to Bonaire because we really loved the snorkeling, the people and the unusual beauty of Bonaire. Before deciding to return I tried to read as many threads as possible about the damage from Lenny and the impact on snorkeling and was feeling confident that we would still be pleased with our experiences. However, a close friend returned from his second visit two weeks ago (first visit post Lenny) and he was very disappointed in the snorkeling. While I look forward to all that Bonaire has to offer I wonder if all you loyal BTers can help to put my mind at ease about snorkeling! Thanks -- I really feel like you folks are honest and will be realistic!

The effects of Lenny vary. The lee side of Klein and the areas that were protected by Klein did not sustain much damage. As one diver put it about diving up north, it was almost like a sharp dividing line between no damage and lots of damage. Some the the more southery areas like Pink Beach also got pounded pretty bad. If you go out on the Woodwind, Rene will take you to the best spots to snorkel.

We had not been to Bonaire prior to Lenny but do understand that the fish population has exploded in the shallows....you will be amazed at the number of fish and sealife you will now see. The coral took a big hit, but the marine life flourished. Enjoy! Carole

I don't feel you will be disappointed. I was not there pre Lenny but I have been there 3 times since and the snorkeling is incredible! From what I here the corals had damage but I already see it rebuilding. I was there in February and then September and I couldn't beleive the difference. The fish life is awesome!!! I have been to a number of Caribbian islands and none can compare to the snorkeling in Bonaire that is right at your front door, no matter where you stay! Enjoy!!!

If you love sea life, you will not be disappointed in the snorkeling. It was very abundant. The soft corals were obviously damaged, but we noticed a lot of places where it is starting to come back. Our experience was fantastic. Can't wait to go back.
