I just heard on the news that Flamingo airport on Bonaire will be renamed to Amalia airport.
Amalia is the name of our new royal princess (read more in the community chat if you like).

Carole ... I'm sure we can find some flamingo lawn decorations though I am not sure how the folks in your complex would feel about them sprouting on the lawn!! And maybe it is time to break down and get all the souvenirs with flamingoes??? LOL! Susan

Susan....I would just LOVE to set up lots of pretty pink flamingoes on the front lawns here! LOL. That would be one way to get our money's worth out of our rent....just to watch the complex owner's reaction! LOL. He is a millionaire as he owns two of these properties in this area and housing is by no means "cheap" in Morris County! I'd LOVE it! LOL.

I'd like to put up a huge Pink Flamingo next to the huge green iguana outside the airport in Bonaire.....the attack of the critters welcomes you......Bon Bini a Bonaire! Carole

Karin, where did you hear this? Jake is this true? I thought a while ago when they expanded the airport it was going to be renamed something generic like Bonaire Int'l Airport. No disrespect the the RP, but Amalia makes no sense for Bonaire.Whose idea on the island was this?

Orange Association happy with Princess Amalia Airport

BONAIRE – The members of the Bonaire Orange Association thanked the Governing Board of the island of Bonaire for her decision to change the name of the airport from Flamingo- to Princess Amalia Airport, soon after the names of the little princess were announced.

“With this, Bonaire has joined Aruba and St.Martin that have named their airports after the queens Beatrix and Juliana respectively”, said chairman Boudewijn Scholts on behalf of the Orange Association. Scholts is also the sales and marketing manager of the Plaza Resort Bonaire. “The Orange Association Bonaire is very happy with the birth of a healthy daughter to His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife Princess Maxima. The little princess is now the third in line for succession of the throne. Her full name is Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria and her Christian name is Amalia.” The executive committee of the Orange Association congratulated the proud parents in writing and has sent the little princess a present. “The decision of Bonaire to change the name of the airport led to a lot of positive reactions in the Netherlands”, concluded Scholts the press release.

Well, we still have the same airport code BON no matter what the other name is. And on Bonaire, bon means good.

Of course, with that big iguana set up at the airport entrance, the powers that be could have named it 'Iguana Airport'. :–)

I do prefer 'Flamingo'; so many other airports are prosaically named after people.

By the way, who does set the name??? Curacao, trying to regain a little favor in Holland??

Look at it this way, those of us that have the flamingo stamp on passports are lucky:-) I wonder if they had this in mind all along when Amalia was "on her way" and that is why they had already phased out the flamingo passport stamp...

Jos, they haven't had the flamingo stamp for a while. It is just a regular looking stamp now. So if you have a flamingo stamp on your passport, then it will become a relic! HOpe that makes sense! Have to try to give Debbie a call today:-)

Aww, they oughta bring back the darn Flamingo stamp whatever fool thing they decide to call the airport. I don't agree that some happy accident of being born regal makes one an automatic icon suitable to rename buildings after.
And what if the poor little thing grows up to be like Paris Hilton?

I'd prefer the International Airport of Independent Bonaire, to celebrate hurling off the yoke of paternalistic colonialism.

Of course, I suppose it is still named after a bird...

Better, hurling off the yoke of the suffocating Central Government in Curacao.

Better now than any of the ex-Colonial countries around the world. Or would you rather live in a central African country or one of the Arab countries, or any of your ex-colonies?? You are free to do that any time you prefer. Part of your freedoms.

Colonialism may not have been as good as Europe or the Americas but it was better than what they have had since. Representative government is great but it doesn't spring fully developed from the foreheads of well meaning outsiders, who don't have to live with the results of their experiments. Just the facts of reality.

Glen, please don't take this as snippy, but ya gotta use complete sentences, or more easily understood fragments, if you want to have a dialogue.

Seb???

You surprise me: american and dialogue????? ;-)

What surprises me even more is that since the start of this "discussion" Bonaire has not yet been liberated by "W" and some odd marines :-)

Or even better : Jack Nicholson, he must have heard that "nose powdering" is quit cheap In that region ???

Skip the punn(sp?) , I believe that if a government want to rename no mather what on or around their Island after a beautifull royal baby girl, it is their say . period.

sjossss

PS imho Paris Hilton is a american "Product" what could only be created in a society who worships wealth.

PPS: Princess Maxima , the baby's mother:-) , stated in an intercepted E-mail that if the child grwe up to be a spoiled bratt she personaly would "glue him/her behind the wallpaper" , which is a dutch saying for "educational zero tolerance".

Jos, glad to see that the new Princess' mother has a good head on her shoulders:-) Not everyone in America worships wealth...I think Carly Simon said it best:

quote:

Money doesn't really do much and looks are temporary. But an interest in the world around you and a caring for other people bring character to your face.

Yeah Jos, some of actually "discuss" things, and some of us just lie through our teeth. W, by the way, doesn't fight in wars, he just sends other folks to fight, and then cuts their pay.

But sure, the government can name it whatever they want, they could call it Peter Stuyvesant International Airport or require all visitors to buy and wear wooden shoes, but none of that would forbid my having an opinion.

I'd rather see people worshipping the earth instead of money or royalty, both of which are not real, but simply ideas we all mostly agree upon. So I thought Flamingo Airport celebrated the status of the island as a refuge for those wonderful avian residents.
And the old flamingo stamp was the coolest dude.

Let me stress I have nothing against the princess, her husband or child. I think they swam by our rental when they were on BON in the year 2 and they were very civil and swam well. I am glad they take the responsibility of being role models, and raising children as such, seriously.

Discussions on naming of airport

BONAIRE – As he said himself, the party leader of the PDB, Jopi Abraham was very astonished with the fact that party leader Ramoncito Booi, following the chairman of the Orange Society of Bonaire, has announced that the name of the airport of Bonaire will be changed from Flamingo International Airport Bonaire to Princess Amalia Airport Bonaire.

Not only Abraham objects this name change, but also the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Aubrey Sealy, the chairman of the board of the airport Kor Folkeringa, and the former commissioner of the airport and also member of the Orange Society Hans Els. Also the population is not very happy with the decision of the members of the Governing Board. Besides, this decision goes against the protocol for using names of the members of the Royal family. Bonaire found out about the name change of the airport when the Dutch media, like the ANP, the TV, and De Telegraaf announced it. The Amigoe reported this the same day it took place, namely on Tuesday. It turned out that the chairman of the Orange Society and marketing director of the Plaza Resort Bonaire Boudewijn ‘Bous’ Scholts has suggested to change the name of the airport into that of the new born princess. Member of Parliament Elhage was interested and Scholts went immediately with the news to the Dutch media. Abraham declared that no Orange Society could make this decision. He can also not imagine that the Orange Society in Amsterdam can for example announce via the international media that Schiphol would become Princess Amalia Airport from now on. Abraham can also not appreciate the way Elhage is running after the Orange Society. “When an insignificant back street in the country gets the name of a Bonairean citizen, it needs to be discussed for weeks, before the decision is made, but changing the name of our airport is done in the twinkling of an eye.”

Gregg, Glen, I joined the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in 1969 and Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1971.

Sounds as though my comments above hit the mark; only wise remarks well wide of the mark from the 'other side'.

My reply to Gregg was somewhat tongue in cheek, but honest. My reply was not a lie. Your statement "doubt he's serious about either" sure sounds like you are accusing me of lying. At the very least you imply that what I say cannot be trusted, maybe there's a fine but defining distinction there too.

I think calling people liars is nasty, unless they have a history of lying, like George W. Bush. See, I can slip in pointless asides too!

About your second "sentence." I think you want to say:

(There is a) Fine but defining distinction (between being in service and having served); (you)sound like our ex-president (speaking about) 'having sex with that woman'.

Now, that "in service and having served" is something YOU said Glenn, not me. I NEVER SAID THAT. Where do you get off putting words in my mouth and then criticising me for what YOU said. That's kind of like lying, isn't it? Attributing your words to me and then criticising your own statement?

In any event, if Susan is correct in her posting this whole thread is about a lie.

Happy Holidays to All, especially the Brights.

PON wants to leave Flamingo Airport as is

BONAIRE – Chairman and political leader of the Partido Obrero Nobo, Theo Frans has sent a letter to mayor Herbert Domacassé, in which he urges not to change the current name of the Bonerian airport. Besides, there are some confusion now in Bonaire whether the current name of the airport is Bonaire International Airport (BIA) NV or Flamingo International Airport (FIA) NV.
The latter is the original name of the airport and Frans doesn’t appreciate having to change it, especially because a newborn creature has now caused an enormous discussion in Bonaire. Frans said that the airport was named Flamingo in connection with the history and the culture of the Bonerian citizens. “The Flamingo is for us a token and we can’t say that of Amalia. If we have to have a special nomenclature for the Dutch princess, than we can do that with a plaza in the center of town”, said Frans. It is absolutely unacceptable for us that a small group ‘Friend of Orange’ decides on the name of our airport. The Bonerian citizens have enough capability to do this themselves.” Frans is of the opinion that the new mayor should not forget that a great deal of the population share PON’s opinion.
