Hi all, Brian (from the UK, what is your last name anyway Brian?) had a suggestion to help raise money for the Donkey Sanctuary....a Bonaire Calendar! The profits would go to the sanctuary...and the pictures on the calendar would be from Bonaire Talkers! Lorraine Bayford is checking into publication information, and I am going to check here in the states as well. It is probably too late to start one for 2003, so the goal is to have one for 2004.

In discussing, we want to have holidays for Bonaire, Netherlands (Martin has volunteered to gather the Netherlands), Canada, United States, and England...any other Countries holidays to be added are welcome!

So start going through your photos of Bonaire, and get ready to submit them when we have things a little more organized!

If you want to help out now with a contribution as a BTalker, go here

Cynde,

I think we will not even make 2004, I think you mean we can not make it for 2004 and are going to make one for 2005... :-)

Cynde, I thought you meant for Christmas, 2004, in which case we would have it finished right?

That calender in Britian with the discretely scanly clads raised a fortune for their charity- a women's club I believe.
Maybe scanly clads here and there around the island discretely posed with donkeys.
Sounds like a seller Phil

Phil, what's a discretely scanly clad?

Phil

I guess you are talking about the film "Calender Girls" but we are looking more at "Looking for Nemo" underwater pictures.

Unless Cynde is doing two calenders? Might raise even more money!

Brian, I thought Phil may have meant "scantily clad" and that would have made sense:-) Yes, this is more of a "looking for nemo" calendar! LOL!

Cynde,

Where do you want us to send pics? How about making it a mix of underwater and above? Maybe every other month under than above. I have GREAT pics of both that I would love to send for the calendar. Just let me know when and where. Hugs!

Hi Liz, glad you like the idea! I need to do some thinking about how we need to handle the pictures. Ideally, folks will submit picture(s), and then it would be great if everyone could "vote" on them, thus the pictures with the most votes would make the calendar.

Did any of you see the calendar that Renata (from Germany) printed and tried to sell in Bonaire for 2002. She did not do a calendar for 2003. It was very creative. She will probably be in Bonaire Nov and Dec at Buddy Dive.

I'll be glad to contribute photos. Keep us posted as to when you'll be collecting them. Maybe there could be both a topside & an underwater photo for each month, one large and one smaller inset photo??? Just an idea!

Just checking in! My local calendar sources are too expensive so I am getting quotes from companies in Vancouver, B.C. They have a lot to pick from. It is definately too late for this year but that's OK as it gives us more time to prepare. We will post a notice when we want people to start sending pictures and to who, so keep watching.

Liz's suggestion that the calendar include topside photos as well as underwater seems good. Lots of UW photo calendars out there. Having topside pictures can help give it a sense of location and make it more unique to Bonaire.

Cynde,

The calendar itself was terrific. Renata merged underwater photos with above surface photos on the same picture. Very expertly done. She had the calanders printed in Curacao at a professional print shop. Renata and her husband Roland own a unit at Buddy Dive and are usually there in December. They take their own photos. I am not sure if the calendar was a business flop. I only know she didn't make one the following years. They were on sale in several shops in Bonaire. Renata also set up a booth near the cruise ship arrival points. I'll ask her in December if I see her again.

Gregg, thanks.

We will have topside and bottomside pics, I think we decided that from the start. Lorraine, I will check with some companies here too, we can compare pricing and go with the best bang for our buck:-) Again, I need to do some thinking and inquiring, as ideally it would be great if folks could submit their pictures, and then everyone "votes" on their favorites, and those that get the most votes go on the calendar. The other way would be to have a committee decide. I like the idea of having BTalkers voting though:-)

How about people posting entries into the photo thread or better a new section that Jake may provide if asked nicely (they would need to conform to the 50kb limit and be able to confirm the actual image size and the quality be checked before the winners are confirmed) - one above water and one below. Then BTr's can vote on the shots and decide what is for the calendar.

Brian, that is what I have been thinking, but I want to talk to Jake about having another feature if possible (to vote). Also maybe different subsections or categories, like marine life, land life, island life...etc. Can you think of any other categories?

Brian, I can't tell you what a great idea this was of yours! I know that Marina is just tickled, and greatful as well:-) Also, as the proceeds will go to the sanctuary, maybe a picture of Marina with some of the donkeys and Btalkers would be a good picture on the back of the calendar (or something like that).

Heck fire Cynde, let's put Marina and the donkeys on the front.......just one guys opinion

I also like the idea of above and below pictures and that Marina and the donkeys play a big part in this project, after all, they are the motivation for this. Heck, we could make a calendar on just donkey's alone, but our market won't have the same passion about them that we do. I also like the idea that BT's vote instead of the committee. In my business, I see pictures and photos everyday, some I like and some I don't and my opinion often differs from my business partner, so I'm a big believer in public opinion.

How about a 'Donkey of the month ' picture? It only needs to be small but would remind everyone why the calendar has been created. Only needs to be perhaps a 2" by 2" shot.

Hi Gang, I just wanted to add my 2cents worth... I was looking around my house at the various calendars and such and it came to me that the one calendar that I really use alot is the one that has no set days on it.. Yes October has 31 day in the month but this calendar doesn't say what day October started on.. I have all the birthdays and special days written on the calendar. I use this one year after year. it never goes bad...
Imagine printing 1000 calendars{cheaper the more you print up} and not having to worry that they will be out dated in one year.. Actually you don't have to worry when you put them on the market as they will be good forever!! When those 1000 are done then a whole new set can be made... perhaps by that time we will have a whole new set of minds from BT as well.... Just my .02 worth!!!!

Just a bit of an update. I have asked two publishers in Vancouver and one locally to quote on our calendars and I am still waiting for their info. (That was a week ago). I also contacted two large calendar companies but they will only do a custom job if they get an order for 10,000. I am looking into a local "desktop" publisher as well. I guess I will have to hound these people for their quotes. Customer service is so hard to find these days!

Oh, forgot to tell you. My husband and I were out celebrating my sister's 40th birthday last night and on the way home we were treated to a fabulous "Aurora Borealis" light show. The brilliant sea green streaks were dancing across the entire sky and my husband said: "That's the same colour as Bonaire waters". I made me forget for a moment that it was -10 deg.C outside and dream of the 86 deg. F in Bonaire. Still -12C here this morning. Old man winter is scratching at the door!

Lorraine, thanks for the update. I need to get my arse in gear and make a few calls here to see if it can get done cheap. I am also going to email the guy on the D2D board that made them for their group last year to see who did theirs. It is a pretty good looking calender.

Yikes! that's cold!

Cynde, don't sweat it! The next couple months are very busy for me at work, so I may not get a lot of time to spend of it. I am hoping to start the ball really rolling in January (I have to take time out in February to go to Bonaire - darn!) but I will keep everyone informed. I also have another option of doing our own desktop printing to save some money. I have purchased a program(not just for this purpose) and it has a calendar option on it. I will print up a sample calendar and send it off to the commmittee to get some feedback.

Very nice idea folks. I recall asking a printer in NH (Morgan Press) about the costs of printing 1000 calendars, 4 color, and was told about 50 cents a piece - this was about 7 years ago. I was looking at a local Boy Scout calendar there which they had printed, prompting my question.

As for the voting/posting thing, not sure what the best way to handle that is...

Jake

I have to agree with Jake on the vote thing. I think it could get too confusing. Why don't we choose a panel of let's say 3-5 BT'ers who could devote their time to looking at pics, and picking final 12 or so pics. These people would need to be available to converse through email, phone, fax, etc. I do like the idea of having a calendar that is perpetual like Freddie says. Oh and by the way, I do have a program on my computer that is set up to make calendars. Don't think I can make it in bulk, but can make a couple of mock ups once the pics are decided. Any help I can give just let me know. Liz
