Maybe I'm losing the plot here, but I feel uncomfortable posting the following "grabbed" video stills. It just seems like cheating to me. I guess they are ok to look at, but there's no skill involved, which to my mind is at least half the satisfaction of this photography business. Lets face it, the camera's capturing 25 low resolution shots every second, so after an hours dive "hoovering up" everything that moves past the lens, there ought to be a few presentable shots. It just becomes a moving version of the Reef Cam. I've shot close to 50 hours of film & there's probably still only about 5 minutes worth that I'm proud of! (maybe I should sell the camera & take up knitting instead).
I can here you saying "For Lord's sake man will you get on with it & post the damned pics?!"

In the Red Sea, Dave. Don't know if you've managed to fit in a visit there yet, but it's the 2nd saltiest Sea on the planet, which gives it that wonderful deep blue & makes the little orange Anthias that cover most of the coral heads, look so good.
No. Thank you Sherry! Or should it be "You're welcome"? (There I could almost be a Yank, dontcha think?
I'll post a few more later if no-one minds too much?

oh. Nope never been..yet. Our next trip is 11/27-Fiji. All my video is analog. Time to bite the bullet and go digital. My housing(& lance) fits a sony, so I would like to stay with that brand. Any comments ye ole wise one?

Must be my breath or my opinions; nobody seems to be talking to me.

Gonna go get some mints, attitude stays the same.

Analog?? Aaaaaah, I remember. Well, I guess you could always use the housing to keep your teeth in, night times.
Stop distracting me will you? I'm trying desperately to get some more pics on the page & Doctor Alhzeimer's forgotten to tell me the next step in the process.
Lance?? what the h*ll do you use a lance for? I thought you were down there to take pics.

Yes Dave, I'm afraid digital is the only option. If luggage allowance isn't a problem, & I don't think it is on your side of the pond, is it? (we are sometimes restricted to 45lbs!) Then I would probably go for the 3chip Sony VX1000 & an Amphibco housing, if you're determined to stay with Sony. The camera is relatively old now, but takes superb film & you should be able to get a really good second hand deal. The Amphibco housing is equally as old & will probably cost as much as the camera, but I still think they are a great combination & are still used by folks who do this stuff for a living. Alternatively, Sony now produce tiny cameras & housings, that you could mistake, in your pocket, for a cigarette lighter! I think that without much bulk, they're prone to "shake" when you're filming, but more importantly, they do nothing for your street cred when you're performing your pre-dive posing ritual by the waters edge!
Hope I've been of some assistance?
Must do a little more studying before I turn in. Now, let me see..... Knit 1, Pearl 1. Oh, this is easy. I'll soon be making my own pants!

Well I would like to keep the housing, its about the size of a football..oops, guess that means something else to you lets see..about the size of a bread box..um I got it, the size of a rugby ball only smaller. but I guess I can sell the whole thing. what do you use?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Barry Gassert on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 11:43 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

Dave...I'll listen to your opinions and attitude. TSF pink card = The Sandwich Factory card for buy 12, get one free....and as far as breath mints? Well, a well seasoned regulator would do fine, I'm sure.

As far as video camera - I have some 400 plus dives with video camera, then it stopped working (corroded circuit board) and then I couldn't find another one to fit my Ikelite....I had a $350 camera, with a $1000 housing - and now, I only have a $0 housing cuz it's worthless. Moral of story:

Buy the most recent model camera, in fact, buy two. If the housing floods, it's reusable, but the camera isn't, thus making the housing worthless if you can't find a camera that is still on the market. Do the math - it's cheaper to buy two cameras and one housing.

As far as size - I hated lugging the thing on my shoredives, but it super stable underwater - I would stay with medium to large housing, cuz it's the video you want, not the comfort of getting into the water.

Go digital for sure....you get video and stills.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Andy Keely on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 1:22 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

And the street cred Barry, don't forget the street cred. Size is everything! Why is your old set up worthless?...You can still spend many happy hours strutting your stuff on the shoreline with the old gear, in front of an adoring public. Hell, it's rare for me to get wet at all these days. Most of my "dives" consist of 3 hours struggling into my Diverite Superwing Tekkie harness & 6 side slung 15 litre cylinders combination (all in regulation black, you understand?), before I drag my refrigerator sized video camera & accompanying studio 5 miles down the road to my local supermarket. There's not much water there, but it sure provides a good audience. One day I'll score, I just know it!
On a more serious note -- why do Tekkies insist on all black gear. Surely, in view of their higher risk activities, it would make more sense for them to be all in pink or yellow, so we could find 'em more easily?
I'm surprised that your Ikelite housing can't be modified to fit a different camera. I used to have one & had mine altered when I changed cameras. It's a few years ago, but they charged about $70 for each control they had to change. I eventually parted with it because I didn't like the optics of the front ports lens.
Now (eventually getting around to Dave's question), I have a Panasonic NV-DX100 camera, which I think is just wonderful housed in a British made Seapro housing, which I just hate. It has great optics & takes great film, but only if your subject isn't planning on going anywhere in the next 30 minutes.....the mechanical controls are desperate to use & usually you have to let go of the housing, with obviously dire results, to use them. I'm currently, & maybe foolishly, attempting a DIY project, of modifying them to be electronically operated switches.
Barry, if you were right, I'd be the first to agree with you, but.....I stick by my first recommendation to Dave. The Sony VX1000 & Amphibco housing. But then, what does an ageing supermarket groupie like me know?

ok, thanks gents, thought I would provide a pic of the current "kit" (pretty good fer a yank eh Andy?)
My housing is about two years old, and has all the bells for the hook up to the LANC port, (not lance as previously misspelled, but that should suprise no one), I'll have to go to and see if this Sony vx1000 will fit, from the name sounds like the cam will cost $1000?. The current cam as a plain jane handycam, any more thoughts?

I should add, when this rig first got wet was in Peleliu and I was pretty taken with it; then a gaggle of japanese divers showed up after a week of dive boat heaven(we had it to ourself), and all of them had the latest and smallest, I mean these things were the size of a pack of cancer sticks.
Well those guys looked at this rig like it was something out of the dark ages.

I gotta say tho diving in outrageous current, like the "Peleliu express" my "film" was much better than theirs in terms of keeping aimed in the general direction of a subject. So I like this size housing.

Barry- you owned the sandwich factory?

totally off topic, as I peck out this post I'm listening to a radio news cast, The USS PELELIU* is on station in the gulf loaded with 2000 Marines that I'm sure are foaming at the mouth, GOD BLESS AND PROTECT THEM. its kickass time.

*peleliu, an island in the southern Palau group was the second most costly battle in WWII in the pacific campaign, 5000 US - 12,000 Japanese, called the forgotten battle.

Dave... Yes, I owned it. Have we met? Actually I still own it, wanna buy it? :) What? You gonna tell me you have 8 cards, filled just waiting to be redeemed? Bummer! Eh?

We're pretty safe so far. I'll be writing tomorrow about the weekly Indonesian events under a new thread, before we venture out for some Dim Sum. Thanks for the thoughts.

I know what it's like to leave a setup like you have. It was strange to dive without mine. I found myself wanting to pick up a dead coral rock and carry it just to feed the habit of having something in my hands. Weird, yeah?

Good luck on your choices. I gave my opinion for what it's worth, so no more from here. Oh, I currently have a Sony DCR-PC9 which is about the size of two cancer packs - Marlboro boxes. Haven't checked the cost of a housing, but maybe some day.

First I have to figure out how to transfer the stuff to my computer. I just learned how to use the digital camera, now the digital video camera...it's getting beyond my old burnt out brain cells. :)

I haven't been to Bon since 11/98, We always stayed at the Bonaire Beach Bungalows owned by Rene Hackenburg, which I understand has been torn down.
Have we met? I'll get to that.
We have dived about all the known shore dives even "white hole" on the wild side in our various trips, then we kind of focused on what we considered the best (for us) which was the north and south parts of the island, then really just ended up going to the park on this last trip. I would always take care of the liquid refreshments for the after dive lunch and my wife would take care of the food part, she ended up getting some really good sandwihes at what she called a "neat" shop. I never saw it. So no I guess we never met. but if you were there in 11/98 I guess maybe we did sample your product, which was very good, but to be completly objective, after 3 morning dives sitting at boca bartol for an extended picnic, having a cold one, well it would have to be a pretty bad sandwich for me not to enjoy:)

Thanks for the input and I'll bet Andy will be disgrunted to see what I have done to his topic.

I'll tune in to your update topic.

Evening all.
We planned to dive Boca Bartol in 12/98, but when we got there the foreshore was littered with half eaten sandwiches so we didn't get out of the car.
You've been missing me, I bet?
Dave, I'll e-mail you the reviews of some 35 housings which featured in one of our uk diving mags recently. Even if you do decide to stick with your current one, you should find it interesting. If you haven't received them by Monday, jog my memory. I really like the look of the controls you've got on your old one. They're just what I need for my DIY project. I'll pay the shipping charges.
I don't think that the VX1000 will fit. And yes, over here a good second hand one would cost about $1000 but probably less in the States.
Why do "you" pay less for Japanese goods than us?
If you want to stick with your existing housing, which probably makes sense, then I agree with Barry, get a new small digital Sony.

Andy you must know that my half eaten sandwiches would not last 1 hor at Bartol with all those hungry iguanas!

I think I found a digital sony in the last year of production with the exact dimensions of the my Handycam $700.

I look forward to seeing your brit propaganda tho!

Why not post it here, somebody else may be interested.

This housing is actually made right here in me hometown, by some retired longhairs from M.I.T.
So if you want, the boards and controls can be purchased for pretty cheap. I can see how you keep that xjs running if you are going to attempt that project.

It does run, right?

I guess "we" are a much bigger market to exploit with the lost leader market concept. After you discovered our patch we have multiplied like gerbils. vicious ones I might add..

Me miss you? NAAH.

matter of fact this is the last post for a few days, going to attempt a run to the tortugas this weekend. So you keep them in line for the next few days.
Cheers

Didn't take you long to get the cork out of the bottle, eh Meyl? (re: "what wash asked")
Video is my "specialist" subject, but you've only got to look at Ellen's pics to see the way digital is going. Even her rig is now old hat, & a pal of mine (who is joining me on The Island next month) has just bought the latest Canon, called the G2. Sadly, it doesn't look as though he'll have the Ikelite housing, which he has ordered to go with it, in time for the trip. If by chance he does, I'll post a few of his pics on our return. To compete with your Nikonos V (needless to say, operated in such skilled hands as yours), they've still got some way to go, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Barry,

Have you considered searching for a used video camera similar to the one you owned previously? I would think one would eventually turn up on an online auction site, like ebay, if you checked periodically.

Seems a shame to waste the housing.

Steve

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Barry Gassert on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 11:30 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

Steve...yes, I had considered it and searched. The problem was I was living on Bonaire, which brought many questions: cost of shipping, cost of import duty, cost of repair if necessary (I just hate buying used equipment from some unknown owner), no guarantee, etc. It just wasn't worth the hassle. I wasn't on Bonairetalk at the time either.

Oh, I could have had my original camera repaired at about $100 more than the camera had originally cost. Based on the laws of diminishing returns I elected to dive with a coral rock...:)

Actually, I miss my rock more than the camera... kinda like my blankie when I was small. It was really hard to give that up, too - but, my date for the prom insisted that I had better or else...:):)

Nevermind ebay, Barry.... I've got a really nice rock I can sell you. With most of my dives taking place on supermarket car parks, I'm sure you'll believe me when I tell you that it's in really good condition & I've only got it wet, twice. Come on, what do you say.? You know you can trust me. I was going to ask $50 for it, but in view of your semi-retired status, I'm going to let you have it for $25. Can't say fairer than that, can I?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Barry Gassert on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 5:29 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Wow Andy... I dunno. I would first have to understand if that's Hong Kong dollars, Singapore dollars or US dollars. I would prefer to pay you in Hong Kong dollars if that would be okay with you. However, I would appreciate if you would pay the shipping - slow boat to China, then down to Singapore. If you can get it there by the 4th of July 2002, I can save you some shipping costs.

Now, the big thing is since I retired in 1992, IBM has only given me one raise and that was eaten up by inflation in 3 nanoseconds (it was 16 US cents per month - big of them, yeah?) so I was thinking, maybe time pay without interest. How does 10 cents a month for 250 months sound, or maybe I can give you 10% down, at 10 cents per month for 225 months? I can electronically transfer the money to your Swiss account since the Brits tax the heck out of you guys and I wouldn't want your tax bracket to increase.

As you can see, I'm really quite flexible here. Oh, how much does your rock weigh? That could change everything if it's too heavy or too light which would make the previous offer null and void.

Oh, one other thing Andy. Have you been English all your life...your humor has a bit of American in it :). All disclosures are necessary for me to do business with you.

Having said that, I for one was started in England at the end of WWII and completed in Pennsylvania, USA after a long and rough boat ride...so, I'm kinda half and half which gives me the brilliant humor such as yours. Just curious.

The pants look mine...I always wondered where they got to...I'll bet we met, yeah. That was you staring at my topless girlfriend back then (yeah, I read other threads and actually remember some of it) and then you walked back again...and again...and again...an answer to an old question...hmmmmm

It also explains the humor - goes with the 60s pants.

As far as HK dollar wrapping of the rock, that would be great!!! A free rock from abroad. I'll dive in pure pleasure now - thank you Andy. Hmmm, you still didn't tell me what it weighs? Bribes are based on weight and size, which I would have to pay to gain possession of the item.

Actually Barry, I think I've still got a few shots of her. Would you like to buy some?
As mentioned many moons ago---- it took nearly 20 years for me to grow into the pants. Mum never accepted the British conversion to metric measurements & whilst (there Dave, managed to get it in again) her patterns were in centimetres, she cut the cloth in inches! So yes, they were created in the 60's.
I trust, & pray (I'm sure I'm becoming infected with this Amercan "display of emotions" thing) that things are still ok for you in Jakarta? There are in excess of 14000 Indonesian islands & you could have picked any one of 13996 of them, with no risk of "troubles". Bummer, eh?

Forgot something I meant to pick up on from a few posts ago.(That Dr Alhzeimer's got a lot to answer for.)
Your mother gave birth on a returning troop ship Barry?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Barry Gassert on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 2:06 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Ahhhhh, I remember the troop ship as though it were some 54 years ago....mid-7th pre-birth month, December in the North Atlantic, rocky, seasick, green & yellow puke, etc...then arriving in port, NYC, and had my first taste of a Sub sandwich by umbilical cord process. Ummmm, goodie :) First one for Mum, too...hahahaha

The competition for space was tremendous with Mum's stomach expanding with gas, pressing on my head (aha, there could be the explanation to many things), she couldn't pass it cuz she had just met my Aunt and Uncle, had English manners and was confined in the small confines of the car. Rode like that for more than 150 miles (94km), she then found the outhouse and sat on the wooden seat for what seemed like hours - mannnnn, the smell (hmmm, another explanation why I gag at baby poop). I actually feared birthing in the bottomless poop pit because the megaton force of that gas escaping.

And he was born 2 months later, an American-English boy with a lot of gas, light headed and a fear of dark, smelly places.

Hmmm, what was the question, Andy? Sorry, got carried away on some nostalgia. Gotta remember when I can, yeah?

Oh, the answer to your question - no :).
