On our first trip to Bonaire, we brought a 1 pound container of mixed nuts to snack on while traveling. We forgot about them until we were in the cab going from the airport to Harbour Village. When we opened them, the cab driver and his wife became very excited that we had nuts, so we gave the nuts to them as a tip. They were very thankful to have the nuts, because in his words "we are on an island and nuts are only imported around the holidays". It seemed they were more happy with the nuts than a monetary tip. We are due back in November, so I was wondering if I should bring packs of nuts and hand them out as tips. does anyone think this is a good idea or a bad one?

Clay ... it would seem to me (IMHO) that you might want to take nuts for people you know on the island but to assume that everyone who does a service would prefer nuts to cash is making a big assumption on your part. Maybe take some along and include them WITH a cash tip for divemasters, housekeepers, etc as you may get to know these folks a little better over the week.

I have, in the past, left liquor for housekeeping and diveshop tips, but I have always asked if they would prefer cash. Living on the US/Mexico border, I generally always travel with a bottle of good tequila and have almost always found that to be a welcome gratuity for dive shop employees, as it was in Bonaire last April

Nuts of all sorts are now available year round in various stores.

Wow, Jake...do we need to be concerned? Are the stores still safe to roam?? Are they strictly loose in the stores?? LOL Carole
