I would like to encourage any one that loves animals, to get involved in any manner you wish in supporting Marina Melis and the Donkey Sanctuary. Marina does a wonderful job providing sanctuary for injured and orphaned donkeys, and assisting in relocation for feral animals to less populated areas of the island. Marina uses quite a bit of her own money to finance this operation, and relies heavily on the donations of others. In my opinion, these animals add to the charm and sensibility of Bonaire. I know they can be a bit of a nuisance to drivers and gardeners, etc., yet they've a right to a living just the same as any other creature. Please give generously in any way you can. Feed alone runs over 500 Guilders a month. I understand Marina faces a less than enthusiastic island constabluary, and is in almost constant conflict with other operations as well. She also provides a habitat for injured Iguanas ( sp?). You can adopt a donkey ( Poncho's my pal ), for $187.00 US a year. This provides feed and basic medicine. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Brian

There's a collection box for the donkey sanctuary at the Flamingo Airport. Whenever I leave Bonaire I drop my "leftover" gilders in the box. It's a small gesture, but I figure every little bit helps. Last week we were driving into town with friends and saw a cute little donkey on the side of the road. Darlene had her camera and begged us to stop so she could snap a picture. The donkey approached the car and posed for pictures while we all laughed in delight. I suppose we were encouraging dangerous behavior, but our intention was to get out of the car and approach the donkey, not the other way around! But the donkey took matters into its own "hands"!

My husband and I adpopted "Joy" while we were on Bonaire last May 2001. We will adopt another donkey this Thanksgiving week, too. Marina and all of the others who work and help out at the Sanctuary are to be commended for their dedication and love of these gentle creatures. If anyone can contribute money or even apples to the Sanctuary it will be a most appreciative gesture. I encourage all to visit this wondeful haven while they are on the island of Bonaire....it won't take a lot of time out of your diving day at all and you will come away feeling wonderful and moved by the experience. Here is a shot of "Joy" and my husband, Joe at feeding time this past May 2001. We can't wait to return with tons of apples again this year and another donation to adopt another critter. Hi Carole.

Actually that quote is a maxim from Mark Twain. Good pic of Joe feeding your friend. Marina's a great lady ( she also manages our apartment for us ), and can use all the help for the Sanctuary she can get. I appreciate your response. Good diving, and when are you and Joe planning to return to the island?

Bri.
