Can a woman in her forties in decent physical condition learn how to windsurf? Does it require tremendous upperbody strength? Is it scary? and will I look like an idiot? I'd love to try it, but don't want to injure myself or get in anyone's way. Will be in Bonaire 12/4. margarite

You can do it. Yes, some all over strength is needed and some sense of coordination but the site at Lac Bay is PERFECT..shallow, warm and see to the bottom. There are GREAT instructors at both shops and great beginner gear at both. JUST DO IT..I am an addict and started in my mid 30's...My friends who sail are 10-80!! Age is not the issue..commitment and time on the water.

If you like the water, try it. I was around forty when I first started and am still doing it quite a few years later. In the beginning, everyone has a lot of ups and downs but we have all gone through it. You'll never know unless you try. Go out there and have some fun and be sure to take a couple of lessons to get off to a good start. Bonaire is a perfect place to learn.

Thanks Ann and Corney Ann. Do I need special shoes? Dive booties, OK? Barefoot? What kind of gear? How much are lessons and board rental?

I'll be heading down for some much needed sailing 2/26-3/8. My 1st visit. I've sailed Cabarete twice (GREAT mt biking...not to mention side-on wave sailing). Who's been down windsurfing on Bonaire that time of year? Will it be slalom sailing?
I haven't sailed since LAST year! (and that was a cold, wet Nor'Easter)...can't wait.

I sailed last Feb. and it was divine. If you can sail Cabarete maybe you can sail upwind to Cai for some waves, Hill!!

When you say slalom you can do anything you want, freestyle, slalom, bump and jump. Depends on the wind but the beauty of Bonaire is you rent for the week or day and grab a rig and go..

Here on Cape it is windy and warm so the windsurf community woke up..will hit the water for low tide..cannot get my head wet..TOO cold..LOL

Ann,
My parents live in Barnstable. I've been sailing the Cape for nearly 20 yrs...I've probably seen you at Dennis, Kalmus... possible Chatam. Kite sailing has become very, very popular up there.

You may wish to review our trip report : http://caribbean.wheretostay.com/property/053-reviews.html about the Sorobon Beach Resort. We loved it! Further questions, please email. The best windsurfing instruction is right next door to the Sorobon Beach Resort. My wife and I learned to windsurf there and loved it - we are both age 50+!
