HI, sorry again, I heard the Plaza is the place to stay for amenities... do they allow thongs for men and women?
Thanks

we stayed at the Plaza from 15-22 Feb and saw some thong bathing suits on some older, portly men. It was reported to me an older gentleman was wearing a gold lame thong, but I did not see it myself.

There were plenty of string bikinis on the beach and many women topless while sunbathing. While the information in the room discouraged the topless sunbathing, I didn't see anyone telling people to cover up.

We saw a couple women in thongs when we recently stayed at the Plaza Resort. Didn't see any men in thongs. It seemed that the European men and gay guys prefer speedos instead. Very few guys actually look good in either.

On the topless sunbathing being discouraged .... the signs say no nude or topless sunbathing. But when my wife went to ask why some of the women were topless on the beach, she was told that it was OK.

Martin~

I'm glad to see you didn't lump me into the European or Gay Guys Club. I'm, for one, an American (older I must add) who wears a Tyr swim trunk. They are close to a Speedo but not cut as narrow. I CAN'T stand wet swimtrunks hanging on my legs! Many newer style swimsuits remind me of the clowns of old, with their crotches hanging down to their knees and the legs opening the size of wheel covers... Although I do go on a "crash diet" about a month before our dive season begins in Illinois, I'm sure some people think I look "different" :>)

Dive Safe, jimini

Jimini - the one time I tried to wear a less bulky swimsuit (e.g. something more than a Speedo and less than bike shorts) it elicited quite (too) amused reactions, as my legs and torse were reasonably tanned but the delta (difference) between the new suit and my normal swim trunks was lily white. Last time I'll try that without first tanning those white areas, and also losing quite a bit of weight :-)

Frank, Plaza's clientele is heavily European, and as already indicated, thongs, and topless sunbathing are quite common there. Probably the only other place where this happens a little is the Divi Flamingo, and that's primarily due to the KLM flight crews there. Makes for an entertaining lunch at Divi's Chibi Chibi Waterfront Restaurant (if the KLM crew isn't too Rubenesque, that is ;-) ).

Interesting observations about the KLM flight crews at the Divi Jake. I totally agree.

Jimini ... I was giving my observations from our time at the Plaza Resort. Wasn't try to lump you into either group ... unless you decide to start speaking Dutch or show up meticulously groomed in a gold lame' or fuschia pink speedo with other guys. :-)

Frankly, for scuba diving with a wetsuit, I think a speedo makes alot of sense. My regular swimsuit, trunks (mid-quad length similar to these http://store.nordstrom.com/product/product.asp?styleid=2800315&category=2376788~2377917~2377993&PrevStyleID=2797793&NextStyleID=2776670 ), just ends up all gathered up around my legs when my I pull my wetsuit up.

But while I'm in decent shape .... my modesty would keep me from wearing a speedo or a thong on the beach. I also like pockets! But that's just me.

I threatened to buy a speedo several years ago and my wife told me to take a picture of it before I put it on because that would be the only way I'd ever see it again(sufferer from middle age bulge). That ended the discussion quite promptly

Hey Martin~

I was giving you a hard time. :>) At my age I wear my TYR swimtrunks at the beach and on the dive docks or diveboats and cover up everywhere else. It's the only way I can show off my two tattoos. Left hip, whaleshark and the right hip a diver's shape flag showing the words NO FEAR in red and white...The tatttoos only show with swim briefs on and not with shorts... Usually if I look around the beach there's always someone else that looks worse than I wearing those Speedos' :>) You're right about those boxers swimsuits bunching up in the wetsuit. I can't stand that either!

Martin,

Please refrain from making further stereotypical remarks regarding gay men. It is not true that “gay guys prefer Speedos” nor that a man who is “meticulously groomed” or wearing “gold lamé or fuschia (sic)” is homosexual.

Your remarks are offensive and have nothing to do with the original question posed. Bonaire is for everyone, regardless of their race, creed, color or sexual orientation.

Sigh .....

No offense was intended nor did I even try to suggest something that could be construed otherwwise. If someone was offended, please forgive me and accept my apology. I know several gay men and they would have had no problems with my comments.

Like I specifically said, I was talking about my personal observations during my stay at the Plaza Resort. I personally did see some gay men .... themselves perpetuating the stereotype .... well groomed, who did wear the gold lame' and brightly colored speedos I wrote about.

Ditto about some of the European men. They did speak other languages and wore speedos as well. Of course this wouldnt' fit the bill for all European men either. No offense was intended with those comments either.

Of course Bonaire is for everyone regardless of their race, creed, color or sexual orientation.
