Hi,
My financee and I are thinking of going to Bonaire in April. We both wear micro swimwear (thongs and g-strings), but have not ever gone nude. We were wondering where to stay? Does Bonaire in general accept that? Should we stay at the nudist resort? What is the most upscale resort there as well?
Thanks
FS

We stayed at the Plaza from 15-22 Feb (trip report forthcoming once I get photos sized properly), and saw plenty of older, portly men wearing thongs. There was plenty of topless sunbathing on the beach and string bikinis.

I think that it isn't recognised as acceptable to be nude anywhere except at Sorobon. When we were there, sometime some Europeans would fly in and would hit the beach topless until they were told by the staff at the Plaza that they must wear some type of suit. I'm not sure how micro-wear is looked upon. It's a suit so I'd think it'd be ok, however, an opinion from a more experienced BT'r would probably be in order for this question. There are several great resorts, Plaza and Divi are two favorites. For the beach - I chose Plaza and loved it - Bonaire, as an island, isn't very beachy but under the water more than makes up for that!!! There is a lot of coral around the island so bring your booties!

And just as a semi-comedic reply, there are probably only 3 humans on the planet that actually look good wearing ass-floss. Save everyone else's eyes and digestion and buy a pair of shorts already. lol

Seriously, there's very little sand on the beaches, plenty of sea urchins, and almost everyone is wearing a diveskin 37 hours a day anyhoo.

It is a marvelous place however, you're gonna love it.

Hi again, please dont let this thread deteriorate into a bashing session. My fiancee and I both workout everyday, its not like we are disgusting or anyting. I am just looking for some information. Sorry to offend anyone with my question. Just want to know if we would offend anyone before we book a place down there. Mostly so the people around us as well as we feel comfortable in our bathingsuits and we dont ruin anyoneelses vacation or our own with our suits. Sorry to offend anyone.

Frank see my comments about the Plaza in the thread above this one.

As far as the naturist resort, it's certainly an option for you - all the folks we know who stay there are very pleased with the resort, but don't expect most of the guests to be supermodels - they're average folk who like to hang out with just what they were born with (with age-induced physical changes added, of course :-) ).

Jake

PS I've also consolidated this thread from a number of different sections where you made multiple posts of the same messages.

Indeed, at least please don't take any of MY umbrage! I've been collecting it for decades and storing it in a mason jar in my backyard. One day when there's a real umbrage shortage, I'm gonna be RICH!!!!!

As far as I can tell Frank you are asking about wearing thong suits. No big deal, they cover your genitalia, they are just cut skimpy and reveal the buns. That is popular everywhere and is not considered "nude". If you are comfortable then those around you will be. Check out Bonaire and you will have a place to begin a lifelong love with. Swimwear is fashion, and it sounds like you prefer a more skin revealing cut, go for it.

I think Bonaire will welcome you w/open arms. How people are dressed (or aren't) doesn't seem to be an issue. I read once that the local culture doesn't really appreciate sunbathing in the nude - but that's heresay on my part. i don't know how true that is. I would fit into Randy's category of "other's" so I never thought about it.
Bonaire, is one of the most friendly islands ever and it is sooo beautiful! Many people on BT love to goof around. Check out the "Car Thief Caught" thread, just to see how silly all can be. (mooved to Community Chat section because it just got to be so outrageous!) It's all in good fun and if you stay on BT for awhile, you just might meet up with fellow BT'rs to have a party with when you are down there! :-) Bonaire is the best and so are the people that visit there, as well as, live there!

Hi Frank, I just thought I'd chime in. Nutty or not, here I go: I stay at Sorobon Beach Resort every year with Bob, and we are very happy there. You tell us you wear micro bathing suits, but don't go nude. Liking to have as little clothing on as possible in the tropics seems as good a reason as any to go the final step and remove all clothing. Someone referred to thongs as "...-floss" -- doesn't sound at all comfortable to me. Wet, binding garments are really a drag, in my opinion. Furthermore, about what Jake said and others alluded: one's shapely or flabby body is not the permission slip for nudity. All bodies are welcome among nudists. The place isn't for showing off. It is for the pleasure of feeling air and water on the skin instead of sticky elastics or tight straps. Think about how your feet like being bare. How about if you stay at the Plaza or another resort for the upscale amenities (which are not a part of life at SBR), and then take a day trip to Sorobon Beach and see what it feels like to have nothing on and to not be judged for an instant on what you look like. It's very nice.

We stay at Sorobon whenever we go to Bonaire - as we are at the end of April. We enjoy the resort because as my hubby loves to say "he doesn't have to wear a diaper". But we are nudists so are comfortable with this lifestyle. If Sorobon is not full when you are there, I believe you may visit as a day visitor. Because their facility is small, their beach GREAT, they do have to limit the number of visitors. And the only part of Sorobon that you have to be nude is the beach. I always like to say to our "textile" friends when they ask what we do when the weather is cold or inclement "nudists aren't crazy, we know when to put on our clothes". We often find come sunset that it does cool off and the ladies will slip into sarongs and the guys into t-shirts.

Okay - I have a question. I want an honest answer. How many people that go to Sorobon have absolutely fabulous bodies vs those that are heavy, overweight, have cellulite, sagging "chests" - I have friends that are nudists and they both have had plastic surgery - what is the truth from you guys who actually decide that this beach lifestyle is for you? I'm not talking "just topless" - I mean totally nude. Also, How many people are there when Sorobon is full and do you find mostly Americans, Europeans or a good mix of cultures? ( This is a sociology question - (Grad degree in Soc. I have to ask!) Thanks for any input!
Michelle

Well, in answer to Michelle, I think that in regular society, as well as nudist company, the extraordinarily beautiful are just that: out-of-the-ordinary. Most people are just average, paunchy, wrinkly, scarred and comfortingly commonplace. I remember having a chuckle with a British woman one year about the absence of tan under her sagging parts, and how maybe she could sunbathe upside-down to even things out. But conversation about our body parts is rare. Conversations are on all the other topics of human interaction, just as elsewhere. After you get over an initial adjustment phase as a new nudist, you amazingly manage to ignore the surfaces. Seeing people undressed mainly evokes human compassion, as well as freedom from assumptions about status, because the costumes of status are missing. Mixed nationalities, every time we're there.

Thanks Niki - I like the freedom of assumptions thesis. I still think that there is a tie that binds, though - and there's got to be a social tier among the "tribe". Status and assumptions are human nature - I think being a naturist just gives it a twist. It's gotta take guts though. I don't think I could break the mainstream more (moray) to go there.
Enough or Jake will bump this thread to who knows where - subtopic :Bonaire; Socio-cultural behavioral attributes of visitors to Sorobon -!

And Frank S. are you still out there?

Hi,
I'm still here and am thankful for all the comments. I guess the main answer in all your messages is that we can wear our suits there and not have many problems. Except for the guy who wants to see my finacee in her thong but will make fun of me... he sounds like a nice guy... Anyways, thanks guys. We may end up going in June instead of April anyways, anyone have any comments on that. Thanks... by the way anyone actually like to see girls or guys in micro swimwear...
Frank

You will find a mix of people at Sorobon, Canadian, U.S. and Europe. You'll also find a mix of body types - thin, average, overweight - but you know what most true nudists don't notice the body it's what's inside that is important. I have friends who are the dearest kindest person around and they are overweight. You tend to accept the person for who they are, not what they look like. Truthfully I tend to notice if a person if overweight or skinny when they have clothes on, not clothes off. As far as those white areas around sagging body parts - I swear one day I'm going to use duct tape. They say it's the one invention with a thousand uses. Standing or lying upside down just doesn't work - can't drink the beer that way :-))

gail, i only wish more folks had the attitude that you and niki have expressed. living in the land of "plastic" here, way too many people are judged by their appearance, and not their soul:-) plus, in the end, what does it really matter? noone is going to look in your casket and say "gee, what a great bod!" i would hope they would be thinking about what a great person they were (or weren't!)

with my one and only visit to a naturalist area at Sorobon, I was most surprised at how many teachers were there. I ended up in the water with 3 teachers from 3 different parts of the world discussing "block scheduling" (whatever that is). Just blows away all my naive preconceptions about my grade school teachers...

Hi Frank

I asked lots of questions when I visited Bon last year cos I am used to sunbathing topless. When we had 3 choices of accommodation, I chose the one that had a verandah which gave privacy and going topless not a problem. And when there, I did go topless on a couple of the beaches, when we were the only ones on it, or others were 'daring' as well. No-one said anything.

I don't think the thong/g string part will be a problem, but your fiancee being topless might.

Frank, if you come to the beach of Plaza, you'll fit in easily. Plenty of the women go topless there (europeans mostly), there's nothing in the rules that says you can't... Only if you go to the pool (hotel guests only). Some women wear thongs, I haven't seen many men doing it but you'll certainly make some of the KLM stewards very happy :-) :-)

Our response to Frank Simmons is you will not be disappointed checking into the Sorobon Beach Resort. The quiet naturist facility is a really nice place to go 'au natural'. My wife and I both recommed the facility to anyone interested in the naturist experience.

My future husband and I are heading to Bonaire for the first time in May and after reading this, I wanted to throw my two cents in about the current subject...

Two years ago Asher and I spent a month on Elba island (off the coast of Tuscany in Italy) and we discovered a beautiful little beach filled with naked people... well, after discussing it for several hours (we come from the conservative South in the US, you see) we decided that we'd give it a try... and it was FABULOUS. We went back to that beach almost every day for a several weeks and in that time we realized that it doesn't matter AT ALL what your body looks like and after you get over the initial shock of seeing lots of body parts all over the place, you get really comfortable with yourself. The people that stare are the new-comers (as we were!) and they'll soon get over it. Also, snorkeling naked is pure joy. I highly recommend it!

Enjoy!

Carolyn
