Is anyone aware of these apartments? We viewed them during our visit last year and wanted to stay there this year but I don't get any response to emails sent to the address on their website (marlie@bonairenet.com ).

Hi Ed, I just saw Marlie on the airport a few hours ago and told her you wanted to contact her. She was not aware of any email problems so it should work. She will check it tomorrow. We stayed in the apartment a few years ago, great place and great people!

Johan.

Dag Gills.
Hoe gaat het met je?

Where are the Sanders Apts?
We are coming back to blue water dive in June, plus hunt for species of Caribbean Banded Box Jelly (now CBBJ since we have positive ID of this species in both the western and eastern Carib).
We haven't seen any of your wonderful photography on BT recently. What's up?
Bud

Where are the Sanders Apts?

They are on Kaya Proud a bit north of town and a couple of blocks in from the ocean.

Hi Bud, Good to read you come back soon. I hope we can go jelly hunting together when you are on Bonaire. Not much diving lately, busy job and busy fam. This morning we went to tori's and found some of your friends, one is swimming right in front of me on the pic:

me and boxjelly

no banded ones yet.

Hey Gills,
Great box jelly pic. The tentacles are really extended. What was the height of the bell (box)? It looks to be a large one of the C. alata species.
We were doing a Man-O-War sting study this a.m. in FL. It is always interesting (and fun) to sting oneself and apply potential solutions. I guess that is why the Dutch call it Eerste Hulp (First Help). btw, the MOWar are unbelievable this year.
Great pic...who took the foto?
Bud

Gills,
Would you repost this pic in the diving or invertebrates thread. It is a great photo and answers the recent inaccurate comment that there are no box jellies in the Caribbean.
Do you have others? We all want to see them.
Danke.
C U Soon
Bud

Hi Bud, I have family in Boca and get there fairly often, although probably not til the Fall next time. Where do you dive in the area? I don't get to dive often when down there because my brother can't dive any more for health reasons. I have done a couple of dives on dive boats out of West Palm and Ft. Lauderdale. So I typically get my taste of warm water and see a few fish by just snorkeling Red Reef - sad, but I don't know of any decent snorkeling in the area either. Any suggesgtions for snorkling in the Boca area? Sorry to go off thread topic :-)

I looked at that pictue yesterday and didn't even see the jellyfish. I was looking in the water. Now I can't see how I missed it! Nice picture!

Hello Bud,

a friend from holland took this picture, this was just outside Tori's Reef. We saw three of them actually, during daytime, around noon. They where indeed quite big, the bells were 8-10 inch. Tentacles where completely extracted about 40 inch.
When you see them swarming at night, it looks like they are the smaller ones. Is it true that the bigger ones are more solitary?

How do you like my new hat? :-)

Bud, i don't know about posting in a diving thread, i don't want to scare people with jelly stories.

I love jellies! They are just beautiful!

Some people might be frightened but more would be better informed about the jellies of Bonaire and the Caribbean. Best to know reality.

Hey Gills,
Another interesting pic of the box jelly. Those are large specimens. The monthly swarms are reproductive parties (jelly feest) and involve many sizes. One swarm off Sanddollar in '98 had some with the bell the size of a futbol/soccer ball (12"). It is difficult to describe the travelling habits of Cubozoans. They do have a form of vision (light and shapes) so they could travel together. It is common to see them in small groups like you did.

On the BT posting, many questions have been raised regarding jellies and box jellies. So rather than scare people off, better to tell them to look out for them. And should they get stung, to look for the animal that stung them so they can tell the medical staff. Here in FL right now there is excellent diving along with an incredible number of Man-O-War in South Florida. The beaches are covered with them. Tourists just have to learn what they are. It doesn't keep them from coming to FL, nor will it keep them from coming to Bonaire. I had the same feelings (of protection) when we first found BBBJ. Now with so many stings all over the Caribbean it is necessary to educate those going into the water. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about box jellies. Some people think there is only one kind of box jelly and that they all are lethal. All Cubozoans do have a nasty sting, but the strength of venom varies widely.

If you have additional box jellies pics please send them. With your permission I will send these to additional researchers and jelly folk at The Smithsonian. They are impressive!
Thanks,
Bud
