We are going to Bonaire for the first time next July. We will be spending a week at Lion's Dive (Buddy's now?) and 3 nights before this, and 4 nights afterwards, at Sorobon. Would you recommend renting a car for the full 2 weeks, or just for the week we will be at Buddy's? I can see that this is a great forum, so thanks in advance for your help.

A little more info would probably be helpful. We plan to do a lot of snorkeling and wonder if the quantity and quality of snorkeling at Sorobon is good enough to warrant spending 3 or 4 days just there.

Well, if the experienced people say to rent for the whole time, that is what we will do. Thanks for your help, and I will post a trip report when we get back this summer.

I go to Sorobon a couple of times each trip after my morning dives are over. If you are going for a relaxing all over tan, 3 or 4 days is great. If you are going for the snorkeling, half a day will do it.

Hi Bobandro,

Allthough I support the recommondation of renting a car, the reef at sorobon is one of the best in Bonaire. The negative point is that it is a long walk (take a kayak and tie it firm to the raft) to the reef. My wife and I were dropped off once at Lac Bay Cai and swam across the whole bay. Very impressive. Make sure no boat is comming when you cross the channel. While crossing the channel (approx 30 - 50 feet deep) look for tarpons (3 - 6 feet long), sea stars and turtels. Once past the channel (200 feet wide) you can stand the whole way till your resort. 3 feet deep.
PS Enter the water at the shallow waters of CAI and not at the point where the waves are.

Follow the yellow line on the picture (from google maps) not the red one. The red one wil lead you trough the wave and possible current.

It will take you about 2 hours if you do it slowly.

Also the futher away from Sorobon, the better the reef. It depends on the wind (= waves) how close you can come to the wild side of the reef.

PS See Sorobon Beach resort in the lower left of the picture.
Snorkel across lac bay resort
Have fun.
We have just returned from Bonaire.
