My husband and I are traveling to Bonaire in February and we need suggestions on where to stay. We usually spend two weeks every year at the Divi in Aruba but have decided to go someplace different this year. We are not divers, merely beachpeople looking for sunshine, nice beaches and relaxation. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, Tracy and welcome to Bonaire Talk!

Bonaire certainly offers plenty of sunshine and relaxation... unfortunately not a lot of sandy beaches. If you are familiar with Divi, you may consider the Divi in Bonaire as an option. There is a very small beach there. Eden Beach also has a sandy beach, with a beach bar and the webcams!

I'm sure others will offer their suggestions also. Bonaire is not the sandy beach vacation destination that Aruba is known for. Just keep that in mind!

Tracey..Welcome to B.T..Bonaire is a very very different island than Aruba. If you're looking for the long never ending white sand beach you will not find anything that will compete with Aruba on Bonaire in my opinion.
Conversely if you're looking to get away from the crowds, small intimate beaches, great food, quaint town, great snorkeling & people, Bonaire will become your spot.

Hi Traceywelcome to bonaire talk

There are a couple of places with a beach. As Kelly mentioned, Divi, Eden, in addition Harbor Village come to mind. Do you want onsite restaurants? Pool? Maybe if you give us a hint of what amenities you like that will help.

Also, you can go to www.infobonaire.com and search accommodations and see what facilities have to offer. Do you snorkel?

We would prefer something with a kitchenette and restaurants nearby. We snorkel. Does Bonaire have same weather as Aruba?

I always vote Divi :-)

Tracey:

Weather is similar. Many/most places have kitchenettes.

Do you prefer to be on the water or not (knowing, of course, you will pay more for waterfront)?

Do you prefer brand new places or more established places?

Do you prefer larger or smaller places?

Do you require a 24 hour front desk?

Is a pool important?

Any other amenities (i.e., beach)?

Important items: beach and pool, kitchenette, nearby eateries and store for supplies. Doesn't matter if large or small, don't require 24 hour desk.

Hi Tracey..Giving your criteria, from one CFP to another, I'd suggest the Plaza (since Bellevue hasn't been built yet) ;-)

Hi Tracey & Welcome to BT :-)

We've stayed 2x at the Plaza & enjoyed it very much. They have a very nice beach & great snorkeling right in front of the place. It is very spread out so if you don't mind walking it will be fine. One of the reasons we stay there is because my in-laws meet us there & they're not divers nor avid snorkelers. They're content to just hang out on the beach & read & swim a bit. The pool is nice too (although we're not pool people). I would advise you though to not get too close to the highway because the airport noise (from what I've been told) can be annoying.
We stay oceanside & have been very happy with the accommodations. There are maps of the property available - you could contact them & I'm sure they'll send you one or I could scan mine & e-mail it to you.
The first year we did not rent a vehicle & walked to town for dinner - about a 15 minute walk. We rented a vehicle last year & that worked out better because we were able to get to the grocery store (which is not very close) and also see the island. Vehicle rentals are very reasonable and there are many choices.

Does anyone know what 3 bedroom apartment # would be closest to the dive shop at Sand Dollar?

Looking for May 2007 for our first trip there.

Tracey, my suggestion would be Eden Beach, small resort, convenient, nice beach, kitchens in the rooms and inexpensive. You can have it all a few feet from your front door.

One suggestion is to rent a vehicle, Bonaire is spread out but easy to navigate and has almost no traffic. You miss to many things without a car.

Hi Tracey,
The Plaza would be my suggestion. the beach there is very nice if you don't mind walking a bit since it is quite spread out. i don't know however, if they have apartment type rentals or just hotel rooms. here is the website to the plaza:
http://www.plazaresortbonaire.com/. It should answer some of your questions.
i definitely suggest renting a car because, like Cecil said, you will miss many things without one.

hi tracey, welcome to bonaire talk. i think carib inn would meet your needs but they might not have any rooms left for that time of year...sometimes it books up a year ahead for the busy season.

i think black durgon also has what you need but it's a little farther from the restaurants in town.
