We are planning to go to Bonaire in March next year and are looking for a good place to stay. We dislike staying at a hotel that play music loudly every evening/night in their bars or restaurants, recently had some bad experience of that from Mauritius. Any suggestions out there? How about the Plaza compared to Divi or the other bigger places? Should we look for a small one? We want to experience snorkling, not partying. Please help!!!

Welcome to BT Ulla. I really would not worry about this on Bonaire. Two reasons, one for the most part only divers go to Bonaire, they do party but they also go to bed early. Staying up late hurts your bottom time the next day. If you walk around most of the resorts after 9:00 it's very quiet.

Second reason has to do with available materials, it seems concrete and cinder block construction is the main method of building on Bonaire. Very sturdy (will hold up to hurricanes) but also very quiet, the people over you could be dancing and you'll never hear it. All this is based on sleeping with the AC on and the windows closed.

Now that I think about this pretty much every resort on Bonaire is cinder blocks.

As Cecil said this isn't a huge party island but if you like nice and quiet you may want to try BelMar as there is no bar or restaraunt on the premise but the Great Escape is right across the street from them. I do believe that they have a nice little bar and restaurant as well as accomodations. And BelMar is away from the "resort row", further south from town. You may also want to consider Carib Inn. But I've never been kept awake at any of the resorts I have stayed at.

enjoy and welcome to BT

I second Belmar. Small (like 22 units), secluded, quiet but great accomodations. Units have a full kitchen, but there is no bar/restaurant on site. It is only a few minutes into town. Belmar is located just south of the airport.

The Oasis Cottages at Don's Habitat are very quiet yet near the activities

Carter - is that ones called Hamlet Oasis? I've stayed there as well - those are indeed pretty quiet.

Stayed twice at the Plaza. I think it really depends on who else is staying there at the time AND where your room is located. First trip, the pool area was quiet at night, but Cocoa Nut Crash was booming a couple of nights. Seriously, I do mean booming the stereo. This affects the ocean front rooms. On the second trip, no one was at Cocoa Nut Crash past 9:00, but there were a lot of visitors late night in the pool. So poolside would be affected then.

I concur with many of the suggestions. If you want real quiet...go with the smaller facilities, or a private house rental. If it is really noise that affects you, besides the party type noise, then you also want to make sure you are not near the airport. That KLM flight in the wee hours of the morning might be an issue for you.

Agreed Tribs. We stayed at a wonderful house right by the airport BUT the wee hours KLM flight did rouse me from my sleep every night but I was right back in dreamland within 1 minute.

Hi Mara Mara. The Hamlet Oasis cottages are not a part of Don's but right next door. These are also very quiet and some are also a stones throw from the action at Don's. I was however, mentioning the Habitat's Oasis cottages that are on the Habitat's property and located behind the Ocean View Rooms. Please see http://www.habitatdiveresorts.com/bonaire/property_map.html#property_map

I think three options
1. Carib Inn - small and friendly and v. quiet.
2. Lighthouse beach resort... depends on who is there, but by and large quiet esp after 9 pm
3. Rent a private house.. though sun rentals or bonairerentals or similar.

We have done the first two and friends have done the last..

We stayed at the Den Laman last week, and it was great. Very quiet, new, fully air conditioned, secure, and competitive in price. We only ate at the restaurant there one night, and it was very good. It only has about 14 units total, studio, 1br and 2br. It doesn't have a swimming pool or other amusements; there is a dive shop based there.

www.denlaman.com, or for more photos, http://gotobonaire.com/denlaman/index.htm

The 1br is about 975 square feet (90 square meters). I think all beds at Den Laman are queen beds. The kitchen has first rate modern appliances, and the living room has a flat screen TV with DVD player, etc (saw no use by us).

For peace and quiet you can't beat Sorobon, and many northern Europeans hang out there (literally!) Planning our third trip back to Sorobon in February, and have never been bothered with noise or obnoxious neighbors.

Yes, I thought Sorobon, but didn't want to mention it because it's a special secret place, isn't it? But now it's been mentioned, I'll add my vote for one of Bonaire's quietest, most relaxing, most enjoyable resorts.

Our stay at the Plaza in February 2006 (with our 4 year old daughter) was peaceful and the very short walk to the reef was ideal for our many family snorkeling ventures. Be sure to mention to the Plaza you require a quiet room on the reef (or they will put you on the airport runway!).

We've stayed at Happy Holiday Homes just north of Lighthouse Beach a few times and it's awesome for quiet. No pool, no bar/restaurant, not on the ocean, but full kitchen, private garden with rinse tub & secure gear storage. Louise, Mel & Kitty make sure you feel at home.
