Does anyone know of any hotel or other accommodation that would accept a dog (under 25 lbs)?

From 1978 - 1997 we visited Bonaire every few years and loved it! In 1997 (shortly after being in Bonaire), I had a stroke. Since 2001, my constant companion (besides my spouse!) has been a medical service dog (seizure alert).

I checked with BONHATA and they have said that, with the proper vet forms, Iris would be welcome to accompany us to Bonaire. The problem is that no place says "pets welcome". I suppose that the issue of canine international visitors doesn't come up often on a small island.

Has anyone brought a 4-legged family member to Bonaire? Are there any property managers or owners reading this who would welcome a well-trained sweetie and her handler who always carries bags to pick up after her? Normally, when we stay in a hotel, we arrange for Housekeeping to skip the room. We make arrangements to swap-out towels, get TP as needed, bag our trash for pick up where and when Housekeeping directs, etc. to avoid inconvenience to the staff.

My husband and I snorkle but do not dive. We would like to be on the water, if possible. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Janis,

Check with Belmar. When I was in Bonaire in June 06 some one had two small dogs. They were not medical service dogs. They were very small dogs...the kind that would fit under a seat.

Also check with Harbor Village. When I was in Bonaire in Oct 05 I met a gentleman who was suppose to come in with 2 teacup yorkies but one yorkie developed a cold and was unable to make the flight...so he came alone to Bonaire and his wife stayed home with his "girls". He was very sad that his wife and "girls" were not with him....
I hope you find a place!
Good luck!

Have you thought about opting for a holiday home or apartment? This could prove much easier. I know that CocoPalmGardens for one accepts well-behaved dogs - at least in those homes/apartments where there is no cat in residence! :-)

Our government suggests checking with the embassy or consulate: http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1228.html

I found this tidbit (maybe they would be service dog friendly?): The Divi Flamingo Beach Resort, (800) 367-3484, www.divibonaire.com, on Bonaire, has five accessible sea-diving boats, which have specially trained staff members to assist people with disabilities. The resort also overhauled its eight disability-accessible rooms (out of 129) in 2002 to make them more compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act. ( http://www.drcfc.org/recentnews.htm )

Thank you all for some great suggestions! Looks like we really can come back to BON after all... We've been missing the fishies (among other wonderful things Bonaire)!!! I really appreciate the help!

Janis, my wife has RA. We have a service dog , Caymus a golden, that can go anywhere my wife goes, except in particular parts of hospitals - food processing plants. He can fly with my wife, full ticket price of coarse! This is a US law. Bonaire?
