I have only stayed in the cottages and yes, there is a safe for each cottage in one of the rooms.

We have stayed in the Villas and Junior Suites and they also had safes. There is a small charge for the use of the safe.

When we travel to Bonaire, we bring w/us a doorknob lock which we utilize on a bathroom door after placing all of our valuables in it for the day. We politely inform the maids we won't need that room cleaned and (before this post)no one can get into it anyway.

Rich... can you provide more info on the doorknob lock? I'm trying to figure out what it looks like and how it works.

Rich
thanks on the doorknob lock good idea. I will look for one in depot ./lowes we have video and digital camera equipment (nondive camera stuff) and we lug it around in our backpack and never leave it in the room. I have been to Ambergris Cay Belize and the front desk had a safe box we kept all.
in Turks Caicos room had a safe lock wall box and I kept everything in there with no problems but there break ins were never an issue.
thanks again.. but I would think its is safe to put the camera s and passports/etc in the safe wall box on provenciles it was large enough to put everything in) (whats the small fee they charge for that I was told.., $10 a day?) and it will be ok .. then you walk with the key for the safe.
the front desk will not secure any valuables for patrons there ? Capt don's

A door knob lock is a round hollowed out metal casing that opens similar to a clam. It is hinged and is designed to fit over the knob. It is much larger than an actual doorknob. It secures into itself with a key. It then spins freely when turned over the knob. When secured onto a doorknob, the doorknob lock completely covers the doorknob, thus you are unable to turn the actual doorknob to open the door. My girlfriend was married to a pro golfer on the European tour and she used it all over the world. Bathrooms are the one room in a hotel/motel/condo you can pretty much be assured will have a standard doorknob.
We have taken it to Bonaire and we use it on any room we feel like securing our stuff in and don't need cleaned.
We bought ours at a lock and key shop here in Vegas. $10.00.
Of course you could still kick the door down, jimmy the latch w/a card, but it is quite a deterrent from a quick grab and run which is what occasionally happens on Bonaire.

Thanks Rich, after I posted I sort of figured it out based on something my brother had on his stairwell door so my youngest nephew didn't take a header. Appreciate the info:-)

Could someone let me know if Capt. don's has a microwave in the room, I know it has a refrigerator. Also, any other information would be great. Thanks a bunch, Judy

We usually stay in the Oasis cabins and they normally have a microwave, but not always; as they are equipped by their individual owners.

Grasshopper, I looked and could only find sites that sell the children's door coverings, which by the way are the same concept of the metal door knob locks we possess.
Again, we purchased ours 10 years ago at a lock and key store.

I've stayed at Captain Don's something like 7 or 8 times. We do get the room safe door (the safes are in all the rooms; you pay $6.00 extra and you get a door for it) for our wallets, passports and airline tickets and such.

We've stayed in the cottages, in the deluxe jr suites, the villa superior, villa suite and villa studio. We've left stuff (cameras, laptops, other electronics) out on counters, and bed tables, and they've never once developed legs.

The people who work for Habitat tend to stay there for a long time - we've seen the same people nearly every trip. I believe that's because they're honest and trustworthy and if they weren't, they wouldn't be there for very long.

I believe there's also some people who work security there, who patrol the grounds during the evening. It really is a very safe place to be.

I personally wouldn't bother with a door knob cover, at least not at Habitat.

Great, Norm - but don't be reckless. I'd hate to hear something happened despite of or because of my reassurances!

Just because we felt safe leaving things out sometimes, it's still best to go with your own gut feelings when you get there. If you're worried about something, just putting it out of sight is good...

My take on it is this... I've been on Bonaire three times and have not had a single incident, that I know about, with having anything taken.
After reading this board before our first trip and ever since then,I know things can get stolen from your room and rental car while on the island; therefore we use the door knob lock when we leave our room. I also use a bike lock on the rental car's spare tire tire. It just makes sense and is no sweat off my back bringing it to the island in my luggage.Nothing has been taken from our room nor have I had to pay for a spare tire at the rental counter
I stress I have not had an incident that I know about...if someone tried my room and was thwarted by my gear being locked...they haven't been around to tell me. See you guys July 7.

Rick,

Were you at an outside villa or in a resort? There can be a difference, especially if the potential thief has seen Jack Chalk (the manager at Habitat). :-)

Everyone has to decide on their own what they're comfortable with - I used to be more paranoid about what was visible in our room when travelling, but after years of seeing the same smiling faces at Habitat, I just don't worry about it.

I kind of like trusting people and being able to do that at Habitat...

I'm very envious of both of you, getting to Bonaire so soon. Have a great time!

Susan,
I stay at Eden Beach every time I go. The only other thing I want to add is that in my travels, Bonaire is the safest place I've ever been to. That includes my neighborhood here in Las Vegas!
