We love Bonaire and have been coming since 1995. However, I am retiring early next year and we would like to stay for a month or more this time.

Does anyone know of any Bonaire accommodations that would allow small dogs? We have two very small (7lb and 3.9lb) dogs that we would like to bring so we could stay longer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome Pat, I think it would be better to contact the establishments themselves to ask about pets.. I think that not a lot of people bring their animals so not many BTers would know the answer to that question.. try looking up various resorts/guesthouses/etc. here

Likely the Bonaire government has rules also about bringing animals to the island-- most countries do, sometimes involving several months of quarantine and required immunizations with evidence. Also check on requirements for re-entry to US.

Thanks for writing what I was thinking Glen. Does any one know the animal rules for Bonaire?

Let me set the record straight! LOTs of folks come with dogs, cats, birds (yes birds...a bit more difficult but doable)! The government could care less if you want to bring a pet....you may have a problem with some air lines however. Check with each carrier and they will advise. Your animal will require a health certificate and proof of rabies shots..thats all...If staying more than 30 days, the local vet has give a clean bill of health...There is no quarantine....Michael

TKS, Michael.

I mentioned the possibility of a quarantine because of an earlier experience with another, European, country that had a 12 or 18 month quarantine for entering dogs. The Captain got around that by taking the dog (his!) to Europe on our US Navy ship, much to the disgust of the seaman who had to 'walk the dog' daily. I was not closely associated with that bit but I rather expect there was a 'pick up the droppings' policy in force. Rain at sea washes the decks pretty well but.... Have to keep US Navy ships neat! The Royal Navy on the other hand had dogs and cats aboard during WWII, at least from Monsarrat's writings. His descriptions of culling the animals are funny.

As a moderator it is your responsibility to report facts. The fact is there is no quatantine for animals to and from the US and Holland, the concern of 99.9% of the folks who use this board for information. Your off hand removal of a factual post is a disservice to the board.

Michael, What fact was in the deleted message that people will be missing? The posting was deleted after discussing it with the moderators and the person that posted it. We did not remove any messages that said there is no quarantine for animals from the US and Holland.

excuse Me Michael but the post that you were referring to was removed as someone complained that it was indeed self promotion.. There are certainly guesthouses and resorts that allow dogs or cats and it is a case by case basis.. there was no real factual information other than the people that posted allowed dogs in their guesthouse if the dogs were friendly to their cats. I believe that you owe me an apology Sir..
I did NOT remove any of your posts..

the purpose of this posting is to confirm Michaels factual description regarding bringing pets to Bonaire and disperse with the hearsay that others have posted

I have brought small dogs and cats numerous times from the U.S. to Bonaire without any problem. You need to have a current immunization certificate that can be obtained from your vet (although Bonaire customs/immigration have never asked for it). I stayed at the Divi after requesting and receiving permission to bring dog/cat from the manager. I have also stayed at Caribe Inn with a cat (again after obtaining permission from Bruce)

As Michael also stated, the only difficulty is dealing with airlines. Most U.S. carriers only allow two live animals in the cabin area (in a pet carrier) per flight segment. You must make a reservation. U.S. Air has a $100 fee. Delta has a $75 fee for the whole flight (Aruba or SJU)

Several years ago the Bonaire police were shooting strays - if this is still the case, I would suggest that anyone bringing pets to the island should ensure that they are properly collared and tagged for identification and retrieval just in case they get out of a room or off a leash.

It still can happen that loose dogs are shot -- out of town, dogs attacking the goats and sheeps of local farmers. Sometimes there are 20+ goats killed and many more bitten by dogs .... I would not think that a tourist dog would run loose out into the Kunukus .....
