I was wondering if the Sand Dollar has safe dive gear lockers. If they have lockers should we use them or should we keep our gear in the room? Thank you. We are purchasing insurance for the gear, but I would not like to have it stolen. Thanks!

They have wooden lockers just steps away from the dock. They will provide a padlock to you upon request for your stay. They are handy for keeping your gear and tank in for a night dive. They are very nice people there as is Mary and her help in the office. We were there last week and enjoyed it very much. They also have a gear storage room with racks and hooks for your gear near the dock and dive shop.

Keely - the dive shop does not recommend using the lockers by the dock as they are not that secure. They said use them at your own risk.

Their gear locker on the other hand is very secure when they lock it up at night. However it is locked when the dive shop is locked from 4:30 pm - 8:30 am. So if you want do not get back by 4:30 or want to do a night or early morning dive - then you may not want to use that room.

Most of the time I kep my gear on the back porch of the condo. It was on the second floor and screened in.

Mary,

Are you sure the gear storage is locked at 4:30 p.m? When we were there last summer (July), it was locked at 9:30 p.m. - even though the office closed at 5 p.m. If they are locking the gear storage room that early it must be a change since last year.

We are planning to be there in September and enjoy diving in the evening and always returned before 9:30.

The gear storage room is secure. It is locked with an iron gate and the grounds are patrolled all night by security guards. We've never had a problem at Sand Dollar.

John, you are right. We just got back late Sunday night. The locker room is open from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm.

The wooden (smaller - holds 5 tanks) lockers are between the dock and dive shop. We kept gear in there as well as tanks for night dives (as they lock up the nitrox at 4:30). That, and we didn't feel like lugging our gear back and forth each time.

You can bring your own lock(s) to use if you'd prefer. Otherwise a small deposit will get you a lock from the dive shop.
