I want badly to come back to bonaire, but it's been a rough year for me, which makes me sheepishly ask these questions. Are there any hostels or less dear rooms to rent on the island, and what time of year is the least expensive time for airfare from the states?

Don't know how cheap you are looking for but Bob and I found the packages at Golden Reef to be very good value for money and the fixtures and fittings are excellent.

As long as you stay away from the major holidays, weekend-to-weekend, and school vacation time (like July-Aug), the air fares will be what they always are, high & higher. For example, for around $400+, I can get from here to MIA; for around $500+ I can fly to Holland. Don't rule out package deals that include air fare & hotel--they might be more affordable than you think. BTW, Julia's right re: Golden Reef--probably the best value available.

My vote goes to a place about 2 blocks away from Golden Reef and on the ocean, Black Durgon Inn. A shore diving package with breakfast is $398. for a week.

Includes room, breakfast, diving out front on Small Wall. I liked it a lot. You might find that a car is needed at either, we walked the mile or so to Lion's Dive restaurant, the food store at Sand Dollar, and Capt Don's restaurant.

Anyway, if you are a diver; you could get away without a car at Black Durgon.

Check out WannaHuts owned by the WannaDive guys. Super nice rooms for the money. I looked a them last trip down. Can't remember the money but it seemed like a super deal at the time.

Not as in BT webbo-moderator as I'm neither modest nor mod and I certainly wouldn't want to present, hold out, presuppose, elude to or otherwise imply, hold forth or misconstrue myself as being anything other than a tired boatbuilder, drinking a amstel after work, taking a brief break, prior to working on the Bill of Material for a new boat, and certainly would not encroach upon, hold forth or even trample around, purposely or by incidental accident upon on the domain of the divas and di-hims of the true and cherished BT Moderator. :-)

I was just in Bonaire in April and I stayed at
the Coco Palm Gardens. They have studios and apartments that are inexpensive, clean, and spacious.

I have stayed there several times and have always been happy with the accomadations.

They even have low season rates.

You can view the website at:

http://www.cocopalmgarden.org

I have not noticed a season when airfare is usually low. You can try a fare watcher setup on
www.travelocity.com that will send you an email, if the fare falls below a price. This works well, if you are flexible on your dates.

Good luck!

Just seconding Dean - we too have been to Coco Palm Gardens a number of times and like the apartments (and hosts) very much. Coco Palm has a range of colourfully decorated studios and apartments to chose from (photos on website). They have fully equipped kitchens and BBQ in the pretty gardens (good to hang out in hammocks!). You'd need a car though (or at least a Vespa), diver or otherwise, then it's only a short ten minute ride to town (Coco Palm is in Belnem).
Enjoy Bonaire! Heike
