I have read that there has been some break-in's at the Plaza Resort and am concerned. Can anyone out there confirm these reports. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Paul

Paul, where have you read this? On BT? I don't remember any postings about theft at the Plaza...

I had some friends who stayed at Plaza last year over by the airport, but their unit wasn't actually "broken" into. The same thing happened to the guests staying in the unit right next door the night before, but they woke up and scared the guy off. The thief simply walked in through the double glass sliding doors during the wee hours of the night while my friends were sleeping. Guests need to check those doors to make sure they are locked. There are three separate panes with sliding doors on each end. When I first saw them, I didn't realize they were double sliding doors, or that they each needed to be locked. Guests need to make sure the stops are in place for each pane, and the doors are locked before going to bed at night. Plaza is one of the most secure properties on Bonaire with its gated entry, and security guards, but if guests don't lock their doors at night, and a thief walks in, it's not considered breaking and entering. We all just need to exercise caution when traveling, and not get relaxed to the point we let our guard down, regardless of location.

Bill, thanks for the link. We returned from island on March 20th, and heard nothing of this.

Betty is right, when you are IN or NOT IN your residence, you need to have the front doors secure, and leave NOTHING of value laying out (when you are in or not in the room). We keep the car keys, wallets, cameras, etc. in the room safe at all times unless they are on our bodies. When you go to out during the day or night, and when you go to bed, secure everything and double check doors, windows etc. (heck, I do this at home, why not on vacation in another country???) I'm not going to give my secret of where I keep the keys to the safe when I sleep ;-) Problem is, if I can remember where I hid them the next morning...

Well, if you just put the keys on a chain around your neck at night.... Or under your pillow... :–)

It is still ridiculous that you have to travel like this -- common sense is one thing but on a small island like Bonaire you shouldn't have to feel so worried about yourself and your possessions. On some of the larger island you expect to have problems but it is a shame the government can't get its act together.
