So I will be staying in Bonaire in March and I am a bit at a loss of where to stay. I know there are a plethora of accommodations, before I even try to choose, I want to settle on what part of the island. I am looking to do some diving and snorkeling, but do not want to be in the heart of downtown. WHat are of Bonaire would allow me access to everything while being slightly out of the way?
Or is this a moot point as Kralendijk is quaint enough anyway?

Keith....there are many places to stay all over the island, especially all along the leeward shore...in Kralendijk, and outside of it as well. What you probably should do is decide what type of accomodations you're looking for.. Condo? Hotel? House? B&B? And what type of amenities you'd like to have? With that information, you'll be able to find a place to stay...in town, or out of town.

Hi Keith--
I just returned from nine days in Bonaire. It was my first time there, so maybe some of the more frequent travelers/residents will disagree, but I don't think you'll find any part of the island too crowded. Downtown consists of a few shops and restaurants--noise and traffic are not a problem anywhere on the island unless you land a hotel room next to the air compressors (this just happened to a friend of mine). Most of the resorts are just North of downtown--all within 10-20 minutes walking distance of shops. The Plaza and Divi are both just South of downtown, and somewhat closer to town and the Town Pier, where cruise ships dock. There are also a few places south of the airport, but without a car, you would feel veritably stranded there. I also don't think the landscape heading that way is as nice. Personally, I would shoot for one of the northern resorts (Harbour Village, Sanddollar Condos, Buddy Dive, Captain Don's). Depending on your interest in beaches, be aware that many resorts on Bonaire have little or no beach whatsoever, just dive piers, so you may want to consider that in making your decision. We really enjoyed snorkeling off the Plaza's beach, but thought that beach was heinously crowded (even midweek and long after peak holiday season) and unattractively walled off from the adjacent property. But it's a diver's island and you can snorkel/dive pretty much anywhere.
Have fun!

keith, before we bought our own place we stayed at the carib inn. it's a short walk (less than 10 minutes) to town and has a great dive shop and great staff. there's no restaurant but you are close enough to town that it's not a problem. very reasonable prices. however, it's small and very possibly is sold out for the time you want to be there. i'd give it a shot tho...you might get in because of a cancellation.
as far as beaches go, there are very few on bonaire. pink beach still hasn't recovered after the hurricane lenny wave surge of 1999. donkey beach, near the airport is nice tho.
