Maybe anyone with info on the status of individual resorts and their reefs as they become known could post them under this thread.

Sanddollar's web site makes it sound like they came through well. (Glad to here that it will still be there when we visit in November!)

Does anyone know how BelMar Apartments and staff are doing? Any damage sustained?

Due to arrive at BelMar the 17th. I E-mailed them this morning, Thursday the 9th, and their response was vague when it came to any damage. I then called my travel agent (who wasn't available so I spoke to who ever answered the phone) and was told all was OK, but I don't know what "OK" means and they didn't seem to want to elaborate. I'm hoping, like you, that someone out there can give us a clearer picture of the effects of the storm at BelMar....... Richard

Just so everyone knows, TCB (Tourist Information Bonaire) created a website with an update. I'm sure it will become more comprehensive as more reports come in. You can access it at: http://www.infobonaire.com/tcb/Ivan.

FYI,

The Bonaire Reporter front page states that Divi lost their dock and dive shop. Buddy Dive lost their dock. Fortunately we came out great! No Damage at all to our place, Golden Reef Inn.

Buddy Dive did not lose their dock. I ate at the Lion's Den last night that overlooks both the Bon Bini and Buddy dock.

Most of the Buddy dock is intact. They need to get some replacement decking. Bon Bini lost one section of decking but again that should be an easy fix. No damage to either of Habitat's that I could see.

Divi lost their dive pier dock but all the pylons survived so the most difficult portion to repair survived. They should be able to get it repaired relatively fast. Their sunbathing pier looked in good shape.

Juan,

I've driven by there a couple of times, and the Cha Cha Cha Pier looked perfectly fine.

Liz - your BonaireTalk status has transitioned from being a regular BTer to being a Bonaire business owner. As such, what you can post and cannot changes drastically. Keep that in mind as you read the following.

First, it is completely unacceptable and inappropriate for you (or actually anyone else) to go and spread incorrect information about other properties on Bonaire. You did that by paraphrasing and reading stuff into a report from the Bonaire Reporter's Web site. What you say is simply not there on the Reporter Web site - I know, I've read it several times.

Then you add insult to injury with a very thinly veiled plug for your property on Bonaire. That is completely unacceptable from you as a Bonaire business owner.

At a minimum, you owe an apology to Buddy Dive for saying they lost their dock (which I have seen for myself that they haven't) and to Divi for stating that they lost their dive shop (they lost a pier, but the shop is still there, as you can see from Roger Willems photos linked to in another thread here in BT).

For everyone - if you do see posts about stuff happening on Bonaire on other sites, then post a link to those sites (or if you have permission, you can also repost verbatim - excerpting verbatim is also an option as long as not too long an excerpt is used and credit is given (under the U.S. Fair Use Doctrine)). However, DO NOT PARAPHRASE OR REINTERPRET MATERIAL YOU HAVE NO PERSONAL AND DIRECT KNOWLEDGE OF. If the source of information is another person (known as "hearsay"), you need to make sure that you make that absolutely clear. But unless you have first-hand knowledge or incontrovertible proof, do not state things as FACT. For a great example of how to do this right, you merely need to look at Brigitte's post above.

Wildly inaccurate posts like the one Liz made only serve to distress the clients of businesses whose operational status is being misdescribed, as well as the business owners themselves. Plus it creates animosity. I'll leave it to you all to figure out between whom.

Jake

Jake,
I read the SAME report that Liz discussed and printed it for my family. There was a link provided to the Online version of the Bonaire Reporter in another thread. The statement that you are referring to was located in the last two sentences of the article and did in fact state that the docks were lost. I was surprised when Linda stated otherwise after eating at Lion's Den. (I had already spread the word in my community. OOPS!)

Just goes to show that we cannot believe everything we read in newspapers! :-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Jake Richter (Moderator - Post #5087) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 2:18 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

The only version I have seen (repeated times) states:

"The small boat pier at the Divi Flamingo was badly damaged and the piers at Buddy Dive, Habitat, and some other spots were temporarily out of action until inspection and minor repairs could be completed."

Maybe the Reporter changed it after the fact (and before I read that page). Had Liz quoted the text found there verbatim (as I just did in the paragraph above) at the time she read it, we would have a better sense of whether that had been actually posted or not by the Reporter.

Can you send me a scan of the entire print-out you made? That might help resolve at least part of the issue here.

Thanks,

Jake

And here's another thought....

The Online version could have easily been updated after it was discovered that the Reporter was in error.

In the meantime, the damage of reporting erroneous information was done. Sad...

Hi all,

I got the FAX from Linda S., and indeed, the Bonaire Reporter changed their story.

Here's what the Bonaire Reporter Home Page said at some point prior to the latest version on this subject:

"The small boat piers of two diving resorts, Divi Flamingo and Buddy Dive, were washed away."

That's not exactly the same as Liz's post:

"The Bonaire Reporter front page states that Divi lost their dock and dive shop. Buddy Dive lost their dock."

But's there's no way to know what else the Bonaire Reporter may have said at some point and then changed, either, so what Liz posted could well have been the same as what the Reporter had incorrectly (and irresponsibly) reported.

So, Liz, I owe you a great big public apology for my rant above about paraphrasing what the Bonaire Reporter posted. My rant was based on an apparent moving target, and your comment looks to well have been similar (swapping "docks" for "piers") to what the Reporter did or may have reported.

I'm sorry, Liz

Linda S., thanks for jumping in here and FAXing me the article. I really appreciate it.

In any event, this situation only more clearly shows why it's so critical to use a verbatim quote instead of paraphrasing something.

Jake

Its not your policy that I was questioning, it was your pulic chastisement of one of our new business communitity members. I think the adage "we don't air our dirty laundry in public" may have a familiar ring to it. With that in mind, I will refrain from any more public comments. If need be,stop by and we can duke it out over some Lovers Ice Cream.

Michael,

I have seen Jake call out other people with vested interests in businesses who make posts on this web site and appreciated his making everyone aware that their opinion might not be totally unbiased.

If he had not done the same to Liz I would have thought there was definite favoritism being exhibited.

I thank Jake for his fair and unbiased enforcement of the policies of this board and do not think he was in any way out of line. It is important for him to maintain not only the integrity of this forum but all appearances of the integrity of this forum by calling out ALL improper posts in like manner.

Just my $.02 - definitely NOT an attack on Michael (I'm still planning on bringing your Folgers next March :-)

I've been away all weekend and just got a chance to read the thread. First of all, let me apologize for any misunderstanding. I only wrote what I saw on my computer screen when I looked on the main page of the Reporter. I guess I should have included quote marks. Secondly, as far as the plug goes, it was NOT meant to be a plug. I was just replying to what the post was requesting.

Jake, I accept your apology, but let me say that I was extremely hurt at your thrashing. We had a discussion while I was on Bonaire last while we were at Gibi's for dinner. I am well aware about "self promotion" on BonaireTalk. I have NEVER before promoted my self in this way. We HAD rented out the townhouse for over 5 years and I NEVER, NOT ONCE attempted to "self promote".

Jake, I really thought you knew me better. I am hurt and totally shocked that you could even think that I would intentionally attempt to hurt any other business on the island. ALL OF YOU THAT KNOW ME, KNOW THAT I WOULD NEVER EVER PUBLICALLY DOWN, DISGRACE, OR HURT any other operation, individual or company on the island, or anywhere else for that matter. That is not who I am or what I am about. Secondly, I'm not so STUPID as to be so intentionally blatant (sp?). I have always believed in doing all I could to make Bonaire thrive.

I'm not asking for favoritism or perferencial treatment from you Jake, it's just something I thought you would feel comfortable coming to me directly, and if you felt it was inaccurate, deleting the post.

To Buddy Dive, I DEFINITELY meant you NO harm. We love your establishment and would NEVER print anything to intentionally harm your business. We especially love your Friday night BBQ's and recommend you HIGHLY to all our friends and people who as us where is a good place to go for dinner.

Jake, it's amazing how a swift tongue can damage a reputation. I hope mine is not tarnished, as it has always be stellar. Oh well, damage done, water under the bridge.

Liz

I somehow think that I have to defend Jake about the "self promotion" part. I know for a fact that in the past Jake has been under "fire" from local inn owners who feld that he allowed Liz Ginocchio to post text, that they have seen as "self promotion" .... he always defended Liz, and there were local buisiness people who found that rather unfair.
Concerning the Bonaire Reporter.... George & Laura certainly do a wonderful job, but it is not the first time that facts turned out not to be facts ... or names not to be the right ones.. it is as with all news papers, just be careful, black on white written means not 100% true.

Wow, this is news to me! Jake, I greatly appreciate any support, but it is unnecessary. I did a search and didn't see anything that I would consider "self promotion". What is done is no different that what other local inn owners do when posting on the site. We don't feel that we need to be in "competition" with other local inn owners, and in fact have agreements with others to work together to provide overflow accommodations with each other in order to promote the "small innkeeper" on Bonaire. Ok, enough about that. I don't want to put my other foot in my mouth! LOL, Liz

Thanks, Gregg....we concur on the bar by the dive shop...most folks will disagree with us, but it is the peace and quiet and serenity at the Divi (when the kids aren't in the pool!LOL) that we love the most.

Kind of ironic that the new bar survived and the dive dock/hut did not...the bar was built to service the divers in that immediate area.....

Can't wait to see some more pics and keep an eye (or two!) on the KLM ladies to be certain they aren't swept over the pier by any water surges...or any other kind of surges in the area! LOL. Have a great trip!! You Bum!!!! Carole (envy...pure envy!)
